Ran into a gentleman on my local trails with a late 80s Kona Cinder cone. Full rigid 1" headset. Roller brake rear and front cantilever. Super cool white base with splatter paint job. Toe clips and a Hite- Rite seat adjuster. Very cool!

The drop bar Redwood is my only MTB, and I love it. I am throwing some Surly Corner Bars on it tomorrow. I had an X, but sold that and ride a State 4130 All Road for gravel.
Have this set up on an old Specialized Globe. Love it and will never part with it. Been single tracking it four years now. It’s an Urban Trail bike. Nice BMX moves👍

HB fella....a mere youngster... I expect it would ride pretty similar to an early '90's MTB but with better gearing and brakes..... Back some 30 odd years ago, it would've been an amazing MTB...It was all crap geometry, quill stems, rigid forks, pretty thin tyres, narrow flat bars, toeclips (!!!) and a 3x system but we rode stupid stuff on them. Now, it's a straight bar gravel bike with fat tyres.....
Exactly. much like my Big Rove ST of many years ago, I rode it on Green Single Track day after day. And rode it on Blue Trails with a lot of dismounting. But compared to even a basic hardtail with a 100 mm fork, it is like night and day, or maybe dusk and day. It does help in developing good MTB skills, that's for sure. So go ride Single Track with it and just keep smiling.
That's funny, because, I use mine to ride the greenway to some green/blue trails and back again. The trails are 16 miles round trip and there is pretty much no other way to get to them. I never thought it was a MTB, I had an MTB and getting to the same trails was a bit of a strain to get to on the MTB. I don't really need an MTB, it really doesn't fit my use case. There are no mountains in my area and it hardly rains here, so an MTB doesn't really meet my needs.
Joking aside. Can it be my mountain bike if I don't have any mountains? Im from south texas and we just have flat trails. Im looking for something thats thru-axle, fast, and budget friendly.
That looks about as capable as the full rigid 26’ers I rode in the early and mid 90’s. I think your summary applies to those bikes as well, can you ride the trails you mentioned on them…yep. Should you, hell no there are much better choices in 2022
I'm really close to buying a bike and for some reason can't make a confident decision. My aspirations and expectations are to ride anywhere and fully functional doing so., Is it easier to buy a bike and just add suspension etc or just drop a few thousand on something already built onto it?

You totally should put a 100mm fork on the redwood. But only if you put drops back* on it. *I know, it came with flat bars, but that must have been a mistake. It's supposed to have drops.
30? That’s nothing. While you were a toddler we were dealing with 26” rims wrapped in1.9” tires, way too short a top tube, hanging over our front tire with narrow flat bars and a 120mm stem, an elastomer fork with 1.5” of travel. That bike would have been a top of the line mountain bike 25 years ago.
