    Great detailed video, good points. A lot of people that are commenting are trolling or never driven the cars you spoke off. The z4 S2000 and Miata are great cars. It's mostly down to preference. I've driven many Miatas because they are really fun cars. I currently have a z4 3.0si as a daily because of the same reasons you stated. I actually like it more than my old S2000. The lack of torque and refinements sucks for daily driving. When I had the S for over 3 years I had a daily corolla. It was fun for meets and weekends but eventually it was more logical for me to own one car. Now i get to enjoy the smooth z4 everyday. The E85/86 Z4 is actually more reliable than other BMW models. It weight similar to the S2000 and gets 25mpg mixed(lowest I've gotten so far is 21 with sport mode on) . Z4s does not get enough credit, it just had bad rep. Its a good combo of the S2000 and Miata. I'm glad you know yourself well and know what you wanted out of your car. A lot of people do not know that and only care about power and track times and forget about their reality.

    Thanks for doing somejustice to this gem and the stable of E85 Z4 roadsters. Most of the hate must be coming from the Mazda and Honda fanboys. All the world's motor journalists are obsessed with JDMs and are very biased towards the likes of Miatas, S2000s, 350/370s and RX7s and barely gives attention or credit to this gem of a car. Overbiased motorjournalism and ill informed biased reviews coupled with the Fast and Furious Hollywood gimmick have all contributed to the rise in hype and value of JDM cars. But in reality, it does not make these cars any more better than the ones in the German stables. I have driven this E85 Z4 and in my honest opinion, it's one of the best sports cars I have driven. Seriously and severely an underestimated car. Chris Bangle's design is sublime and no modern BMW can match this flame surfacing and seductive styling which have been copied by other automakers today, including the Alfa Romeo 4C and the new Supra. The S2K was produced to commemorate Honda's 50th Anniversary and F1 tech was used in the enginnering process. The E85 Z4 had nothing of that. Just a replacement for the retro Z3. Yet Clarkson and his crew from the old TOP GEAR pitted the E85 Z4 against the Boxster and S2000 around the TOP GEAR race track and these guys know a thing or two about cars as they make their living driving cars. The non-M E85 Z4 beat the S2000 fair and square and more importantly, it is on par with the S2K on handling, power, and performance. Yet to this day, the Z4 doesn't get any credit or respect from the automotive community. I think this lack of attention is what makes this car even more seductive and attractive compared to the overglorified and over hyped S2K and other JDM models.

    These motors are so easy to work on. Especially on the Z4. Lots of people do not realize that. First thing to go wrong is the SPARK PLUGS or COILS. Easy fix. Not that expensive. Valve cover needs replacement around 80-90k. Easy fix. Fuel pump will eventually give out. Time consuming but easy fix. I love my 03 Z4 and it WILL NEVER go to a mechanic. Did you do a video for fixing the top? What did you find wrong? Mine works fine, thank goodness, but at 119k miles/2006 I am starting to cringe when I use it. I did find the right side drain stopped up (heard a sloshing sound that led me to it! that much water!) and the latching mechanism would not engage another time (pushing it down during the lock cycle fixed it somehow), but I am really dreading a hydraulic failure. I cannot see down into the left side, which is where the motor is. I have read the left drain clogging can lead to the motor failing, but it is too tight to see under the motor. thanks for the videos!

    a friend of mine was going to choose between a 370Z and Z4. he ended up getting the Z4 and i kid you not, literally 2 weeks after he go it, with 15,000 miles on it. the coil packs went and it had a faulty injector and it wasn't under warranty. cost him something like £2300 to replace. which is like $4000. its an absolutely stunning car and drives like a dream however. if you get one then just be prepared to pay heavily on repairs.

    Nice video... I recently bought a 2006 Z4 and it’s put the fun back into motoring. I’ve been a long time owner of Porsche’s (20+ years) The 928 being my favourite, simply because they have that soul that you’d mentioned with your Z4. Hence I’d decided to change brands and find a car that has that something special and although the Z4 is not as fast as most. It has that special quality that nearly everyone has forgotten ... it has a soul and is a true roadster, in the same vein as the Triumph TR’s which I’ve also owned.

    If you can afford the luxury maintenance, Z4 wins without a doubt. IMO the curves and style of the car are miles ahead of the other two... and with 120k miles, my Z4 still runs in great condition! Only had to fix an O-ring and trimming. I get constant compliments with my Z4 from random people... BMW puts you on another class from Hondas and Mazdas. Good choice!

    I own a 135i and I'm looking for an S2000. Given your criteria I think you made a great choice. The refinement, luxury, driving dynamics of BMWs are great. Much more livable than the Honda, much nicer than the Mazda. When you have kids one day, you can trade in the Z and get a 335i and have the S2K as a second car. BMWs are great dynamically steering feel, pedals, shifter. People who say it's for the badge have no clue.
    Great point about the Miata: yes they are inexpensive and can be modded easily but the depreciation on mods is huge and instant.

    Wow! Such a similar experience! After perusing two Miata's at CarMax in Monrovia CA for about 12k, I find an '05 Z4 through CarMax in Pasadena. Nice clean vehicle - really shames the Miata. I',m redy to take it and zoom but while on the lot I get a call from a dealer in Cerritos with the updated '07 3.0i Roadster under 80k miles and we deal. I am having a blast developing a relationship with this machine and just as you've noted, not much to do in terms of upgrades other than some cosmetic stuff, preferentially based. I've searched many images on line and this vehicle as stock stands TALL! Some intimate touches include wheels and rims, caliper and brake painting, (opinion on powder coating of OEM rims?), license plate frames, (tail pipe tips?), stubby antenna, LED wind resistor, light kits (interior and exterior), (headlights?), wood grain interior kit... I am planning on being with this beauty for many years to come.

What the OP said about the miata being a money pit, it's not the maintenance it's the amount of time and money that you have to drop on the miata for it to be somewhat on par with the Z4. For all the haters, German cars puts you in a different class than a Honda or Mazda and you know it. Stop complaining about expensive maintenance and all that BS. I ended up with the 2006 3.0si roadster. I love the ride, but it has had some problems which thankfully did not detract (much) from driveability, allowing for procrastination. For example, the left headlight is glazing over, on the INSIDE. Replacement is at least $800, just for the housing! That is my biggest gripe - even for do it yourselfer, parts are outrageous, and sometimes you cannot avoid getting the OEM part. Did I say I love the ride?

      The tops of all Z4's from 2003-2008 have poor design in that the water drain holes is where the electric-hydraulic motor for the top resides. Thus, if not maintained/cleaned properly, the drain holes get clogged up over the years with debris and cause the motors to fail.
      For repair, I removed the hydraulic motor and rewired the motor, as well as fixed the electronic board on it. A huge thanks to my dad for the helping hand with that one, saved about $2000 at the dealership

Now it's 2020 and they all cheap, so it comes down to what you want to do with the car, are you going to make it a high speed machine or you going to cruise it? Stock the 911 and Z4 M will smoke the lower price cars, but higher cost to maintain, so what do you want to be seen in, cause I don't care what you do to the s2000 that 911 always going to look bad ass. I got the Z4 M and after 1k miles took it out and got up to 173 stock. Buy what you can afford is the bottom line.

    I feel that the miata has the best overall chassis. The s2000 has the best engine and the z4 probably has the best interior. I am in the miata life. It is my favorite out of the three. They are all good cars.

    Compared to s2k and miata it has a larger engine inline 6 3.0l but it’s still lightweight for that size. S2k engine weighs 147kg while the z4 3.0si is 168kg so only 14% heavier, while the car itself is 5% heavier.
    While the s2k revs to 8500-9000 rpm the z4 can still do 7k rpm and it has VVL and VVT as well. The M version because of using mechanical lifters it can rev even higher. So a screaming 4 cylider vs the bmw 6 I think they can be comparable in terms of sound feeling
    Now, the z4 is accelerating faster at high speed and from low speed it’s about the same as the s2k
    Overall the z4 seems a good choice and at a good price
    Front suspension is a bit worse
    Miata is considerably lighter than both so it is still a nice choice and it has easier maintainance. You can buy a used mazda ND for the price of a 2008 z4 coupe. This can be a better deal for spending less money with maintenance but the z4 can be improved to get better performance (dampers, LSD, brakes, etc) and maybe you like larger displacement engines.
    Corrosion protection is relaively good for z4 as well.
    I wanted to trade my z4 for a miata nd but I got offers of 10k€ and would need an extra 5k for a miata. I could do it if I found a good condition nd 2.0 manual but I haven’t found a safe offer. Plus my car seems quite good for a 10k car so maybe the best way is to keep it

    I'm in the same situation, trying to balance cost with performance and reliability for every day driving. I have a sports bike for the weekend blast but want something fun to drive to work in every day, and ditch the 320d (which is pretty decent fun to be fair). For me, the Z4 ticks a lot of boxes. It may not fit others ideals of "the best" but it seems a great all rounder. MX is under powered, S2000 is overpriced. The Zed fits right in the middle, plus has more low down, everyday grunt than the S.

    was your budget only 10k? I would be wary of a Z4 with 90k miles. (at least it's not a pre '06 Boxster).
    The S2000 is bullet proof in terms of reliability. There are folks on S2ki.com that have 275k plus miles, and running great - even with f/i. If you want to keep this vehicle for years and years of enjoyment, it was not the best choice. My MY08 AP2 came with just 39k miles, and I expect to get many smiles per gallon for years to come. anyway, congrats on your new ride. The Z4 is definitely a sporty car, and everywhere you go, ppl will assume you're a wealthy dude - helps with the chicks lol.
    But because of the rarity and mythical status of the S2000 (aside from the NSX, Honda is today known for reliable but unexciting cars) - I get alot of attention in the S - ppl taking pictures, "is that a ferrari?", etc.
    Many ppl have heard of S2000s, but have never seen one in person, I constantly have ppl cruising a few car lengths behind me just to have a glimpse of the S. This is crazy because I live in SoCal, where there is more concentration of the S than anywhere else in the US. Still, it's a rare car, with 110k built, 55k in the USA, and probably 45k actually on the streets - accounting for garage queens and totaled vehicles. (AP1 S2Ks had a tendency to wrap itself around a tree for unexperienced drivers thinking they are Johnny Tran from the fast and the furious.
    The Z4 is not pedestrian by any stretch of the imagination, but the S2000 is simply an "ICONIC" vehicle, an example of Honda at its peak.
    The S2000 is the perfect sports car - well almost perfect. The handling is insane. The only dings I would give it are 1) light steering and numb feel; 2) too tail-happy at the limits, since the rear aero creates alot of lift at speed. Both can be remedied by disabling the electronic powered steering (EPS) and adding a rear wing. Of course, this doesn't apply to everyday driving, only when you push it to extremes on the track.
    With all that said, I'd still love to own a Z4, since the BMW badge makes everyone assume you are a wealthy-ass dude. lulz

    Did you do your research on reliability, cost of parts and maintenance? The S2000 has the Z4 beat in that arena. The reason that car was so inexpensive is common for German cars. Their resale value is horrible after the warranty expires because of the cost to repair them.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Bern To a certain extent. For example, not only did I fix the roof for no money at all, I increased its reliability by re-engineering it so that it won't fail again. You can't do that for everything, but being handy makes the running cost of both cars virtually the same for me.

    I test drove a S2000 and fell in love. It just felt right. Idk what you're talking about that you have to drive it at high rpm's to get it going, because when I drove it, I'd shift it at 4-5k rpm and it was quick, well my opinion anyway... And when you want to drive it at high rpm's, the vtec is crazy wonderful, just brings a smile to my face.

      It is....for other cars, but when you have a 9k redline I think it's fine, that's what the engine is made for, no? But anyways, I bought it and it's my daily, and it's awesome.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheJimmyster I'm sure its awesome, don't get me wrong. But I don't know how I feel about having to rev to 4-5k rpm just to keep up with other cars due to lack of torque at lower rpms. The car gets loud above 3k rpm already. But really, if that's what you're into, then that's fine by me.. everyone has their own preference.

    • @s2kBscreamin
      @s2kBscreamin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, it does get loud I guess, especially when I first drove it, I was like, "holy hell, it feels like the engine's about to explode", but I've grown accustomed to it. And vtec doesn't kick in 'til 5500-6000 rpm, but I shift before that. It really does come down to preference at the end of the day, so whatever feels right for you, go for it. I've always been fond of the "Z's" and "M's", not really into the "i's" as I always see those.

I have been own it since 1000mil, had no problem yet and love it.. yes s2k is still great car but, i really couldnt feel my self in it safety.. it goes but doesnt not where it goes.. but on the otherside bmw is a really great car.. so everyones thinking are different but love my car.. can beat any s2k any 350z any shit american muscles except 5.0..

    Nice video, I was in the same situation Dec. 2014. Except my list included, 370Z, FRS/BRZ, MX-5, S2000, and Z4. I ended up with the S2000. It was as you said a little more expensive, but for me I was mainly scared of BMW repairs and all the things that make the S2000 what it is, is nonexistent these days and we'll prob never see another one like it.
    I was strongly looking at the Z4, 370Z and S2000 at the end of the day. Dropped the mx-5 off because of power and it just didn't pull me in like the others did. All in all I agree with all your points about the Z4 and daily driving it. I came from a 04 civic with a REALLY stiff suspension so to daily the S2000 isn't bad at all in my book.

      lol and, what do you tell me about the z8??
      I was comparing that one to the clasic older z3 and i relized that is like a premium or luxury BMW Spyder, so elegant.

      +zed4me haters gonna hate! Personally I'd love a S2K but now you can find a similar age/milage Z4 cheaper. My only concern is cost of ownership (repairs, maintenance, etc)

    Good luck with maintaining it specially if you gonna drive it everyday, just to change brake pads is a headache on those cars, plus they burn a quarter of oil every 1000miles! And they don't have a dipstick to check your oil level! It was on the news the other day, BMW admitted. And don't even think about the M series, they burn up to 2.5 quarters every 700miles!

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ERICK4431 think you need to double check your facts. I change brake pads in 20 minutes total. And there's a dipstick.

    • @ERICK4431
      @ERICK4431 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      zed4me You got lucky then! I thought you said the year of your BMW was 08? BMW start it doing those changes about the dipstick around 08-09 and to change brake pads you have to use a computer with the BMW software to close back the caliper after changing pads! And that is a fact! You just got lucky they didn't do it on that year....

    Miata's underpowered and looks a tad 'girlie'. The S2000's phenomenal if you're in gung ho mode and ready to use high revs, but it can't surf along on torque at low revs. The Z4 3.0 has good low-revs torque & better brakes, and is quicker & faster than the other. two. The cultured howl of its six-pot is also better than the four cylinder blat of the others.
    Z4 3.0 for me,

    my dad used to have a 2004 Z4 with the 3.0. it was an awesome car. I still have my s2000. when I'm asked to compare the cars, I say the Z4 is 85 percent of the performance offered by the s2000, but 100 percent more comfortable. the z4 feels like it has more torque but it doesn't. from a top gear roll in both cars at 40mph, they're neck and neck in acceleration. however, the s2000 is Def the faster car. my dad and I found the s2000 to pull about 2.5 cars from 40 to 110. just my .02 cents.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The z4 does have more torque... At 40 the s2000 in top gear is turning much higher rpm than the z4 so that's why they're neck and neck.

      Gearing is a factor, for sure. And numbers matter, but in the real world it's a greater example to factor in the lighter car, smaller tires (less rotating mass), and gearing. The S2000 does have LESS torque, yet it will out pull the zed. Done it many times, stock examples both in great condition. We played with speed. 40, 30, 55, etc. Similar outcome

      ***** I've also done a comparison video with it side by side, check it out.. the s2000 does not out pull a z4.

    • @AdvBrewery
      @AdvBrewery 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      zed4me, unique example. browse forums and times and you'll see an s2k is slightly faster. s2000 has more aggressive gearing, lighter, less rotating mass, and more power.
