I had two “technicians” (actually sales people) come out and quote me from between 8k-14k to replace my whole air conditioning system. They said it was burned out and not worth the money to fix. I ended up doing it myself for less than $300 by watching this video (I ended up changing out the capacitor and contactor as well). This is the real deal, don’t let yourself get ripped off.
Yeah I got quotes for new AC units 11-18K. Absolutely insane. Luckily I watched this video I’m getting this done asap. I already know it’s not the capacitor. Had someone come look at it.
For house units this is insane but I'll explain why. The epa, the government and r410 freon. If you fill with old freon it will cost you upwards of $350-700 a pound to put in so a new unit is better. But they're ripping y'all I just had one of my commercial units replaced for $17k it's a 5 ton of I remember right.
I bought the motor for $230 after taxes...... And just spent 35 minutes doing it myself.... Thank you for this video it saved me $888. I paid a company to diagnostic my unit. ($69) they then emailed a quote of $888 just for the labor!!!! I'm not a guy that knows or even wants to deal with wiring but this was easy even for me
@@marketbrock8496 I went to a contractors store and brought the HVAC business card for the guy who said I needed a whole new unit. I told them I needed to pick it up for him and he was installing.. that he asked me to swing by and grab it. They gave me contractors price. Paid $77 for the motor and capacitor.
I replaced the capacitor then the compressor would run but the fan wont, double checked all connections and everything was fine. Texted an HVAC tech I know and was hoping he will be able to come and fix the fan tomorrow. Then I watched your video right before going to bed and went to the unit with a long screw driver, gave it a spin and pushed the breaker in and the unit started running just fine. Tomorrow if the HVAC guy could make time would come and with a poke of screw driver drain $200 out of my pocket. Thank you so much for the video. Just to share with all, my AC stopped working Saturday night and all the HVAC supply stores are closed on Sunday (Atlanta area). So I ordered it from Amazon for $14.99 then added another item to the order to bring my total to over $25 and got overnight Prime delivery in less than 24 hours. When searching I searched for items that has overnight delivery available.
Great video. Im doing exactly the same job this morning with the same 2 motors as you use. I searched this video to try and figure out the wiring differences before i head over. Your step by step explanation is perfect.
Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Your video helped me a lot and gave me confidence to tackle this. It really wasn't that bad at all, and luckily, the motor I ordered had the exact same wiring as my old motor, and I didn't have to splice anything as the wires were long enough for the job. Thanks again
Thank you so much for reaching me for the past 5 years soon Becuse of you I will become a very good hvac person! And btw I started looking at videos like this when I was 4 or 5 crazy and now I’m 11
In the video I watched, found it to be accurate and informative. In your next video I would include the information that there are motors differences when it comes to wet and dry locations . A service tech thought he was giving me a good deal . Sold me an indoor blower motor for a good price, although it was for my condenser. Didn't know till I got it home.I called him he said oh it's alright I use them on all cond. Fan mtr replacements . Sold it back to him.
I have a fan blade puller that looks similar to the one shown in the video. My puller also came with hooks but I have never used them. That puller is worth its weight in gold and has come in handy many times.
that reminds me I got a small puller and I have not seen it . . I lent my tool box to this cat and after he returned it it was missing some of my most used tools I have that BS
Good explanation and details but whatever you do, DO NOT Loop wires outside of the unit under ANY circumstances. Keep all wiring protected inside the confines of the unit. No one should be able to walk up to an electrical device and touch wires without removing a cover to do so.
I didn’t have a fan puller when I got to that part and I just simply put wd-40 all over the backside and top side aswell as inside the removable tightening nut, then i put an object that fit perfectly in the hole, Put pressure while pulling the fan blade with my other hand (wear gloves just incase) and it came out relatively easy.
Thanks for sharing, very good video, it doesn't seem like a difficult task w/ your video. Questions: 1) My condenser runs well, but when the temperature outside gets really cold or hot, it makes a REAL LOUD noise (like buzzing/humming), is this an indication of bad capacitor/motor? Is there a way I can be sure it is before I try to replace it? 2) Why did you cut the bolts? Couldn't you have the left the original length? 3) Why is the motor reversable and doesn't run just on one/the right direction? 4) Is it OK to leave the wires wrapped on the grill permanently? Thank you.
thanks for this nice video, if the new fan motor i bought has same rpm, voltage, and HorsePower, but the amp is 1.3 , but the old amp only 1.0, will this cause a problem ? thanks
question: some people cut the ground saying the motor is grounded by frame. also, leaving the reverse wires out is convenient in case need to switch them, however will those get sun damaged over time? also some put the yellow on the contact guess that is ok too? thanks again
I have never seen anybody receive a shock from a run capacitor connected to an AC voltage source. What you need to worry about is capacitors connected to a high voltage DC source (televisions, HVAC inverters, etc.).
You'll be fine as long as the disconnect is pulled. If you touch the leads with it still in you'll get a shock but it's only about 110v to 120v. It's not that bad tbh.
This issue happened to me this past Tuesday, our power company cause outage for about 2 minutes and when it came back on it blew out my motor fan, had to call a professional to come out and replace it today.
something I have seen I would like to mention. The wires coming from the fan to the contacts. I have seen on some mobile home manufacturers that didn't have a plastic sleeve for the wires , and I guess it could be the installers , using plastic ties to strap the wire to the top grill. Don't do that. Plastic degrades in the sun. And it will be fine for a while but when it gives and the wire drops into the fan and the fan bends and cuts into the coil, that's totaled. If you have to do that use a coat hanger or something and you need something around the wire if you can to protect it from the sun as well. just sayn
Honestly that is a very valid point. Most newer manufacturers (probably to minimize costs) do not have the protective clips on the wires like the older models. Many condensers have clips on the under of the panel where the motor attaches. Regardless I appreciate the input especially when the goal is to help technicians become more effective in the field.
@@MoreThanMaintenance Typically if your fan gets bent it won't touch the coil due to the way most manufacturers put the fan in a throat away from the coil. I'm a bit late to this but the only thing you need to be mindful of is discharging it before handling. The safest way to do so is with a load resistor, I have a 100W 4 ohm set for that.
