In that first engagement you had +3 Spahi, he had + 1 Deli and +2 Bombards.
He poorly position his bombards/ you positioned your Spahi very well and quickly killed 3 bombards. After that happened he was trying to save his last two bombards while you were killing his Nizams.
He had far too much space between his bombards and the Nizams/Spahi.
Not to mention you got 2 early bombard volley off against his nizams, and his only bombard volley was with only 2 Bombards against your spahi.
That engagement went so well for you since you put him on the defensive and he was reacting to you
