  • Kali's sister Lisa came out for a Winnipeg visit and wanted to go fishing. Rather then going for walleyes we decided to giver her a bit of an experience. An experience that people come from all over to try........Channel Cat fishing.
These are super powerful fish and are some of the biggest channel cats around so I knew it was going to be a battle.
We had a great time and some sore muscles but overall it was another great day on the Red River.
Thank you Lisa for being a trooper and joining us on the water.

Great video team! That current has been a monster this year. Thankfully it’s starting to slow down. Won’t be long until Lockport is looking like its old self.

Hey Mike, Thanks for putting on these videos of you and Kali fishing for cats. I wanted to take a buddy out for his first cats, yesterday and we fished this area with shrimp. His first cat was a 35.5" master.
Hoping to do this for a few other people this year, yet.
    Keep up the great content.

Sounds like you need some better hooks.
I lost a few there this year on 30 pound mono above the swivel. The ends were shredded, I think from dragging on zebra mussels down there. I now use 50 pound mono for my leader and for a couple of feet above the swivel and weight That seems to be able to stand the mussels better

@@paulchapman8759 yeah it’s strange. Have never had issues like we had that day and used them for the catfish derby’s last year. I think with that 3-4mph current may have added just a bit more pressure on the line for sure.

Been using a Kast King Rover R60 with an Ugly Stick Catfish Special 2piece MH 9ft for a couple of seasons now and I can't find a better setup.
That Ugly Stick loads up so well for Channel Cats, my $600 Musky setup can't compare to it. You don't realize how much of a difference a flexible rod makes with Channels Cats until you try one. If a $75 rod (use whatever reel you want) is in your budget I would highly recommend heading down over to LOTW Outfitters or Cabela's and picking one up.

Do you ever use Goldeye for bait? I find shrimp gets too many small cats and drum.

Not usually as I don’t usually keep fish but have thought of it for sure.

@@ReelLifeWithMike It stays on the hook much better than shrimp as well. For me, it is easily the most consistent bait for getting large cats.
