  • On my very first "paying" job, I worked with a WWII veteran who was one of the thousands of US Army soldiers who hit the beach on D-Day. My father was a WWII veteran as well, and he was in what was then called the US Army Air Corps, and was an aircraft mechanic on B-24 Liberator bombers....

Thanks Chuck. In my youth no one I knew discussed the war, including my father. I only knew he was in the South Pacific by the few souvenirs he had. My ex had an uncle that perished on D Day. He was rarely discussed but there was a wall with all of his accolades. Europe for sure owes these troops and the USA a debt of gratitude for eternity.

My father didn't talk a lot about the war, but he did say that what he did (his job) would basically have been fun....if it wasn't for it being during a war. They of course lost some guys they knew who were on the flight crews, but their base itself was in a secure location. I agree with you about the debt of gratitude....

Great stories! Thank you for sharing!
My wife’s father was a radioman with the Army and was at Normandy. He said their boat driver knew how far out the defenses could shoot and stopped before getting into range. When he jumped out, the water was over his head with the heavy radio and batteries as well. One of the fellows in his group, Tex, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and helped to where he could stand. He made it through the war, including Battle of The Bulge, but never saw Tex again.

Loved the tribute. Years ago I worked on the golf course of an HOA and I used to see a man walking his dog in the mornings I stopped to chat with him as he had the same breed of dog I own and liked, we became very good friends and over the years I would keep his dog for him when he traveled to France. Turns out he was a D-day Veteran was there on the beach that day and survived. He never talked too much about it, but traveled quite often to France for funerals or memorials. He would have loved to see the 80th commemoration ceremonies. Thanks for your tribute to these brave men. The one I knew was a genuine and good man, and I got to thank him for his service before he passed.

Thank you, Linda, and thanks for sharing your story. There aren't very many D-Day survivors still around, and it won't be very long before all of them are gone. It's important that we all remember them....
