Clearest explanation on chiasms I’ve heard yet. Thank you!

I’m really enjoying this presentation. Thank you so much for sharing! I recently found what I think is a chiasm in John 5 (vv19-30) and I’m excited to learn more. It just makes the Bible (and the God of the Bible) even more beautiful!

@hendrien0, thank you. I also wasn't taught this in church (or even seminary!), so I wanted to share the results of my research.

You keep saying that we MUST understand Parallelisms and Chiasms in order to properly understand the text. While understanding these concepts is most valuable, I think you've got it backward--the fact that we have the text presented using these concepts is the very reason our understanding is enlightened... knowing whether or not this or that is an example of the literary device is just the cream on top, the fact that biblical truths are being understood is what gives credence to the methods.
    Great stuff, btw!

This structure brings to mind all the times Jesus spoke of being
in the midst; among you; within you.
He is the beginning AND the end as well as in the midst.
The middle of each chiasm is the turning point, pivot point and anchor point that holds it all together.
    Very cool😎

Daniel’s 70 weeks is also a chiasm. Count started in 457BCE followed by 7 weeks and then 62. Jesus comes at 69 and is cut off just as it reads halfway into the last 7.
Then in 1535, the Ottomans also gave the same decree and did rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, completed in 1541. This time, 62 weeks comes first and Jerusalem is built in times of trouble and is reunited with Israel in that 6 day war in ‘67 just before the expiration of 62 weeks. At the end of 69 weeks, we arrive at Rev 12 and the birth of that child. We saw that sign in Virgo depicting the human birth of the child. We also saw the embassy move to Jerusalem fulfilling end of Daniel 11. A final colonial empire overflows borders and pitches his tents in Jerusalem. The very next verse says at that time, Michael stands up.
So now cut to today and what has transpired on this earth since 2018. Israel is being stripped naked with Zionism the culprit and obstacle to peace.
The wording of that 70 week prophesy implies both advents, saying the messiah comes after 7 weeks. So the chiastic structure reveals both timelines. The first proved to be accurate and no reason to doubt the second could also be just as accurate and that we’re swiftly moving in that direction today.

This is a lot of fun!
Thank you! As you discussed each different story around a water well I thought....
To find true love, come to the well; to find rest, come to the well; to find "LIVING WATER" come to THE WELL.....
Jesus said that HE is the Word.
Father spoke... (the WORD)... everything into existence...
The first word of the bible in Hebrew has the entire message of Jesus within it.
The more I study, the more the Holy Spirit reveals!
    Truly exciting!

I just had this idea while watching this. Revelation describes birth pangs before Jesus comes back which is a chiasm of Mary’s birth pangs during his first coming. I’m sure there is more to explore here.

    Question:
When John falls down in the 2 passages, the first time his worship is accepted, but the second time he is rebuked. How can this be a true parallelism?

There are layers. The concepts are poetic but in the original language it had more layers we don't in translation.
