As much as rendering an image sequence sux, that definitely saved me today. For some reason a couple effects I was using were bugging out in the middle of a render and would crash AE every time. I had to restart the image sequence render a couple times but once it got past those few weird frames in the middle everything went perfectly. Thanks a bunch!
@@hat7su select a layer that is effects intensive. Use the Solo checkbox to show only that layer. Send the comp to the Render Queue. Choose QuickTime as the format. Thank you so much for the video! I was encountering so many error reports, but somehow switching the render option made it went smooth and even faster!
I came to this video looking for a solution while literally doing option 5. Idk why I found that funny. But thanks for the help, I’ll keep it in mind for next time.
Most of my render problems are fixed by rendering as lossless (AVI) on ae, and then importing the avi in media encoder and rendering as mp4. Tedious, but this is how I usually fix my problems. I think it's because rendering as mp4 means that the software tries to find the best way to compress each frame and append it to a file. Doing this could be very slow, depending on how good your PC is. Mine isn't very good, sadly.
I feel your pain and rendering to an AVI from After Effects then rerendering will get you there. I beleive the experts reccomend the Apple ProRes codecs over AVI files these days - but if your current workflow works for you, I wouldn't change. At least After Effects can send you a push notification when its finished rendering now.
Intro was basically me as well, and perhaps most of everyone else. 'Am aware that a computer restart might actually fix the problem, but I was stubborn. I've tried all of this and still nothing, it still keeps getting stuck all the time. I spent 5 hours on an edit just to have it not render and I've tried about 30 times now and still nothing. So frustrating
@@ShiveringCactus yeah I tried the image sequence and it got stuck halfway. I ended up rendering each layer seperately and that worked :) It did take a while though because there were about 50 layers
I've always rendered in MP4 but for some reason that is the one file export I cannot render in. This problem occurred nearly a year ago and I decided to render in AVI. The issue though is that it's file size is rediculous and uploading to TH-cam is tedious. I can't use online file converters because the file is too big. What should I do?
One more thing you can do, ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Don't render it with media encoder first, Render it with after effects for first time, It will create a huge sized file, then drag and drop it to media encoder, Render it and your job is done🤗 (I hope atleast)
Fortunately it looks like Adobe are going to add MP4 export back to the render queue. If you do have to render out with AE (which is currently not the recommended method), render out using the QuickTime setting for ProRes. This can give you a video with an alpha channel. It’s still large but not as bad as an AVI file
Nope, all the solutions I talked about should still work. Since the video Adobe have now added h.264 into the render queue, but I still mainly use Media Encoder
I’m trying to render and when I do I get a message saying the selected output module will overwrite a file that already exists to allow press okay and when I do press okay it says the name of the selected output module is already in use please choose another name idk what to do I need help
That sounds like to file you’re trying to overwrite is in use in another program. Name your new file with a 1 at the end, render it and then later delete the first one.
Hmm, that sounds like it’s lost the location you’re rendering to or has crashed. Try deleting it from the render queue and re-add it, then change its name.
When you render the image sequence, is that via the render queue? If it’s still failing, try solo-ing one effect intensive layer. Then if that works, add this back to your comp, turning off the original. This should reduce the overall load on your computer’s ram/processor
I tried to render the edit in full resolution but it only renders until a certain time, but when I render it in half resolution it renders full, the thing is now after doing all the steps in the video, I cant even export 1 frame :(
That’s odd. Are you running 2022, or an earlier version? If you are, does the multi frame render make a difference? What is full resolution for your comp? Have you tried rendering it as an image sequence?
@@ShiveringCactus What is full resolution for your comp? 1080p Have you tried rendering it as an image sequence? No, but I think its a really long process Also, it tells me that my sapphire ran out of memory, how can I fix that?
Hmm, so 1080p shouldn't be too taxing, I was wondering is this was a 4k issue. Image sequences are frustrating to use, but if your system can't cope with a big comp, then it's a way of making sure you don't have to repeat any render. Once done, you can make a video out of the sequence in minutes. I don't have Sapphire myself, but I do know it's a Boris FX plugin. It might be that with all of AE's memory requirements, there's just not enough to share with Sapphire. Can you replace that effect with another?

My render doesn’t crash, it just stops. It will get to 50 to 80% and then just stop, my screen doesn’t freeze and it only works with this one project, this has never happened before and doesn’t happen with other projects like, just this one
My guess would be something in that particular comp. Check the render logs for the exact time it fails and see if you can spot a problematic layer or effect.
@@ShiveringCactus I solved it! It was just with that video I was trying to render bc with the others it did work. With the video I was trying to render I kept getting an error saying “*nameofthevideo*.mov cannot be overwritten as it will be used for rendering” I re-did the video (the only thing I did with AE was a caption with text effects) converting the video in MP4 and it worked
Depending on your comp, there might be a lot going on and AE is filling up your cache, or your graphics card can't handle it. Try rendering out an image sequence from AE's render queue. If nothing else, you should be able to assemble a full sequence out of rendering separate parts of the timeline.
When I try render it will start fine however when it gets to a certain frame it will give me the error “this frame cannot be processed,” by chance is there anything that can help?
If you click on the rendering preset from the main screen, a pop up opens. From here you can alter the resolution to match HD, including how the video fills the space.

I’m not familiar with the sapphire plug-in, but it sounds like your computer might not have the required RAM to render out at full quality. Try rendering without an alpha channel and see if that works.
@@DaceLmao try rendering out without alpha. If that works, then you can try rendering out a separate black and white version. You can then use that as a luma matte.
Not heard of that one, but try this page: www.errorvault.com/en/troubleshooting/runtime-errors/adobe-systems-inc/adobe-after-effects/error-998_after-effects-error-998

@@ShiveringCactus haha sorry no not all of it but perhaps just in my case. I couldn't find the log files despite after effects insisting they existed which I assume must have something to do with my particular set-up.. Or ae 2023 has changed
@@ShiveringCactus yes that is what I am use to as well. However today it just was not there.. And so I believed I had gone crazy.. But now I think it is just a new "feature" that I don't understand yet and will have to figure out at a later date. Normally it works fine though.. I don't know what I did "wrong" this time. PS I hate After Effects.. It took me 3 hours to render a sequence that would have taken 1 hour in blender.. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to work with After Effects..
Ah right, that will be an issue as AE uses your computer’s RAM in rendering and will fill up. As your render fails on the first frame, it’s probably the effect you’re trying to use. Particle effects can be particularly bad. Try to render out just that layer on its own as a png with alpha sequence, (the solo button helps here), then bring that back into AE and turn off the original layer.
@@ShiveringCactus it is rendering rn i managed to render the whole thing after clearing cache, you saying it's "an effect i used" i usually have about 10 on top of each other and 100+ layers on top of each other. it's insane haha that would be a right mess to try to sort out! haha!
OK, so that's where the image sequence comes in. When you render using that, AE may still freeze, but you'll not need to re-render the first half of the comp. Instead, once you've got AE unfrozen, with a cleared cache, you can render from the next frame that AE failed at. This way long, render-heavy comps can be still outputted. Once you have the whole comp as an image sequence, you can bring this back into AE (if you have audio) or straight into AME and turn it into an MP4

It worked for me, hope it works for you 😁
Thanks, you solved my prob!
Will it affect any factors within the project? Perhaps the quality or fps?
Where is encoding settings
@@tatyanah0 Scroll down under the video menu.
You know I cover this just after the 1 minute mark, right? I mean yeah, the video is all of 3 minutes so I know there’s a lot to wade through 😉
My render doesn’t crash, it just stops.
My rendering doesn’t fail, it doesn’t even start when I click render
That’s rough. When that’s happened to me in the past, it’s been the graphic card, try which to software render only and see if that works.
@@lvnaseraph ah, that explains it. Well done for spotting the issue and correcting it.
@@ShiveringCactus everything is fine now, thanks! 💕
My video always stuck in 29%😭 plz help me.........
Have you been able to render anything as an image sequence?
@@ShiveringCactus no... Because this is very disturbing 😣
Depending on your comp, there might be a lot going on and AE is filling up your cache, or your graphics card can't handle it. Try rendering out an image sequence from AE's render queue. If nothing else, you should be able to assemble a full sequence out of rendering separate parts of the timeline.
Thank you,, ❤️ it helps🥺
When I try render it will start fine however when it gets to a certain frame it will give me the error “this frame cannot be processed,” by chance is there anything that can help?
Sounds like the media at that frame is corrupt. Try replacing it, even just rendering out that frame on its own might help
@@ShiveringCactus ty
My render only fails on clips which i zoom in around 600-700 with motion tile
I think you’re probably pushing motion tile a bit too much. Could you start with a larger image and not zoom in as much?
@@ShiveringCactus yess, am doing that and now my render is pretty smooth,
i changed my render "best setting" from full to 1/3rd and now its working ,
@@shu6hedits but i want full quality :'')
SAME PLEASE HELP ME IVE BEEN TRYING FOR 5 HOURS
Omg thank you so much
You're welcome! I've just learned today that MP4 export is coming back to AE, so that might reduce a lot of the issues too
How do you render in HD quality in adobe media encoder using 576x1028 format?
If you click on the rendering preset from the main screen, a pop up opens. From here you can alter the resolution to match HD, including how the video fills the space.
@@ShiveringCactus thanks!
Bro mine was not solving i use adobe animate but i export it shows error code 3
In preferences for AME, try disabling h.264 Hardware Accelerated decoding
@@ShiveringCactus it is turned off😩
Hmm, apparently Error 3 is more about AME with Animator or Premiere Pro does have some issues, take a look at this link about Premiere Pro: www.thewindowsclub.com/error-code-3-error-compiling-movie-export-error-on-premiere-pro
But what if you need to use the Cinema4D extrude function?
If your render still fails, then use the render queue and render out a PNG sequence.
hey man my ae render always crashes with the sapphire plugin (i was trying to render 1920x1080 60fps quicktime with rgb+alpha) and when i go to render it the render percentage gets stuck at 0% and then crashes with the error code "after effects can't continue (plugin) generated an unexpected exception" plz help
I’m not familiar with the sapphire plug-in, but it sounds like your computer might not have the required RAM to render out at full quality. Try rendering without an alpha channel and see if that works.
@@ShiveringCactus i specificly need my render in rgb+alpha though so i dont know what else to do and the bug is only with sapphire which is strange
@@DaceLmao try rendering out without alpha. If that works, then you can try rendering out a separate black and white version. You can then use that as a luma matte.
Thank you
You’re welcome. Hope that’s the end of your rendering issues

I try
None of these options worked... I just don't understand why
Hmm. That’s odd. Is there anything in the error logs? Drop me a line on my website if you like and I can try to help. Shiveringcactus.net
how to fix code 9988 render?
Not heard of that one, but try this page: www.errorvault.com/en/troubleshooting/runtime-errors/adobe-systems-inc/adobe-after-effects/error-998_after-effects-error-998
Just reset your GPU if you are using your GPU for encoding.
To do this press:
CTRL + Windows + Shift + B
It will reset your GPU and your display will give you a black screen for a second. But don't worry. It worked for me...
My PC has been really stable for ages now. But I’ll try this out next time it crashes.
Great, thanks for this video.
You’re welcome
nothing is working!!!
Nothing is? It’s really difficult to diagnose issues here on TH-cam. I post regularly on CreativeCow.net. Head over to their forums and post as much info as you can, screenshots, things you’ve tried, plug-ins you’re using etc…
And you’ve definitely tried disabling GPU acceleration?
It worked
tysm beo u saved me from edit more 7 hours
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Think this is outdated or something
All of it? GPU rendering is still an issue and while you can now render MP4s in After Effects, you can still hit issues which this video covers.
@@ShiveringCactus haha sorry no not all of it but perhaps just in my case. I couldn't find the log files despite after effects insisting they existed which I assume must have something to do with my particular set-up.. Or ae 2023 has changed
@@kasper7203 ah Adobe… moving stuff. If you’re just in AE and your render failed, then the link to the error log is in the render queue (I think)
My solution was the lack of disk space lol
It still failed
Can you render out a single frame? Is it possible to use render queue? Or is if that Adobe Media Encoder will not open?
my failed at 1 second in. :cries:
Try render queue to make a png sequence. Worst comes to the worst you render one second at a time.
@@ShiveringCactus only thing is its a 30m video! haha, clearing the cache and closing Ae seems to have helped tho!!
@@ShiveringCactus it is rendering rn i managed to render the whole thing after clearing cache, you saying it's "an effect i used" i usually have about 10 on top of each other and 100+ layers on top of each other. it's insane haha that would be a right mess to try to sort out! haha!
tyy
You’re welcome
anyone find i cant render like 2 mothns i lost so much money pls anyone !!
Post on Adobe’s forum, you can include error logs and screenshots there and I’m one of a bunch of experts who can help
Its not working
What isn’t working? The image sequence option?
@@ShiveringCactus not sequence it happens with composition
Have you tried my suggestions in the video? To render out an image sequence first? If AME will not open, you can try the render queue option inside AE
@@ShiveringCactus render queue is also not working . its render half of composition then automatically freez
