    No other machine evokes such beauty and purpose as the Spitfire. It’s hard to say otherwise but I think it is probably mans greatest ever machine. Thanks for posting

    Seeing and listening 9 Spitfires in a row it's epic, the Merlin sound it's incomparable.

    Could you just imagine how proud you would have been in WW2 Britain to have seen the sight of all those Spitfire's flying in formation, and just how safe you would have felt.

    The startup of the Spitfires sounds like a choir readying for a vocal performance. The Griffon-engine Spitfires sounds more raw and brutal, with a focus on power, as well as a touch of staccato in them. The Merlin-engine Spitfires sounds much lower, but places an emphasis on a refined sound and a throat-resounding growl. Both are a treat for both eyes and ears.

    • @mothmagic1
      @mothmagic1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people say that but I think the Griffon sounds smoother. The Merlin has more of a crackle to the exhaust note.

    The sound gives you goosebumps. I know war is hell on earth but I'd love to have been a kid in WW2 England living near an airfield. Imagine visiting everyday to watch them come in & out and the battle overhead. I've visited a few old WW2 strips for various model flying events. Their were quite a few here in Essex.

      I had the opportunity to meet an old fellow I had been told flew during the war. He starts talking to me, and two minutes in, he tells me he lived in *Castle Bromwich* at the start of the war 😃!!! Almost peed my pants!!!
      Sadly, he passed away shortly afterwards. 😥

      My father DID live through the battle of Britain as a 10 year old boy. IT WAS NOT FUN!!!!!!He and his parents were bombed several times as there were close to an airfield.He says he remembers little of the Spitfire and hurricanes .... but a LOT about the bombers and dive bombers he was convinced had come just to kill him!:-(

    Yes great video. Pity about the continual chatter from the speakers. Perhaps Duxford will keep the airwaves clear next time and only provide any information after or before the flight. A banal commentary is not required when we have the aircraft in flight. It is their nostalgic voice we want to hear

    • @jimsheach
      @jimsheach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be much better if they transmitted the commentary on a local FM radio channel, they do that at some shows. You can then choose to listen or not. It also means you can record a "clean" commentary to add to your video edit later if you want to. Glad you liked the Video :-) lots more on my channel at: th-cam.com/users/jimsheach

      Polish pilots were flying Spitfires and Hurricanes as part of the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain.
      Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding (head of RAF Fighter Command) wrote: "Had it not been for the magnificent material contribution by the Polish squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry, I hesitate to say that the outcome of the Battle would have been the same".

      @@brucerobinson7295 on further reading I see the Spitfire was earlier in its life at the Strathallan Aircraft Museum (long closed down) which was about 40 miles from my home in Edinburgh. I have vague recollections visiting the museum as a child. So we have probably both seen the same Spitfire! It's a small world indeed :-)

    Why do the commentators at these events not have the brains to realise that their voices cannot compete with the sound of the aircraft engines? Spectators come for the sound as much as the sight, so many of these events are ruined by "talking heads" spouting forth at the most inappropriate time....commentary is for when the aircraft are on the ground!

    Did they HAVE 140/150 AV.gas?? The supercharging leads to high BMEP THE MERLIN SHOULD HAVE PULLED 45/50 INCHES...R 2800 WENT TO 56 INCHES.
    At least one tanker of AV. fuel went from Bayonne to UK ,not part of Lend Lease. If they are not pushed hi-octane is not needed good old L100 is ok.

  • @yahatinda
    @yahatinda 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They must be running low grade gas,holding manifold pressure down.

    • @yahatinda
      @yahatinda 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TO AVOID detonation [preignition] and ending up with a holed piston.I think, but Im not sure ,the U.S. sent a tanker of 145 octane via lead AV.gas.

    • @barrierodliffe4155
      @barrierodliffe4155 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexander.
      I wonder how much faster the p 51 would have been if it had the Spitfire wings.
      The Mk XIV Spitfire was faster than any P 51, but speed was only one small part of performance, even a Merlin engine Mk IX Spitfire had better climb and acceleration the a later P 51 D.

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexander Reimer
      The radiators and oil coolers under the Spitfire wings also had zero drag. Look up "Meredith Effect".

      The laminar flow wing was tried in the proposed Spitfire successor, the Spiteful, which was designed in 1943 and first flew in June 1944. The project was cancelled in 1947, having showed little improvement over the Spitfire. After rigorous high-speed testing of the Spiteful, Supermarine test pilot Patrick Shea-Simmonds wrote, "...it was confirmation that the Spitfire wing was a darn sight better and more efficient aerodynamically than had been supposed. And, at the same time, the supposed advantages of the laminar flow wing proved illusory."

      Dambuster whilst I don’t want to diminish their individual sacrifices, not that many Americans served in the Battle of Britain, only about 12, which is dwarfed by the numbers of Canadians, Poles, Czechs, Kiwis and Aussies, and many other nations that contributed over 500 pilots to the BoB.

      A squadron is a lose term it can change from twelve upwards depending which Air Force you are with according to the web The English gave the USA 600 Spits and flown under the USA flag on a lend lease agreement.

    • @dambuster6387
      @dambuster6387 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes according to the web 12 seems to be the minimum for a squadron The British borrowed on lend lease I guess the 600 Spits were maybe some kind of pay back to reduce the debt. I know that the radio equipment from RCA Corporation of America The British tried to send back to the states and RCA did not want them back after the war and a lot of it was dumped down a mine shaft and some of it was brand new. 944 Squadron one of those was flown by COL LT John Blyth (USA ) a MK 11 with guns removed and extra fuel tanks fitted on the leading edge of the wings painted PR Blue. Its on You Tube.
