I saw The Kings of Comedy in a theater in 2000. Holy shit man. People were losing their fucking minds. I had never seen anything like it. I was 14 years old. The Bernie Mac portion of the film destroyed the crowd.

For a sitcom, the show was actually really funny. It was a single camera, no laugh track show (If I remember correctly) so it was more like Malcolm in the Middle or something like that. And it was actually quite funny. He also wasn't really like that in person. He was a pretty chill dude. He's great in film, too. He did a remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner with Ashton Kutcher, which you would think would suck, but it was great, in large part to Bernie Mac.

@@joshuabolton3866 That’s not what single camera refers to. Most sitcoms are shot using multiple cameras at the same time to get multiple angles. Films however are shot with one camera and filming all the angles differently, shooting the scene over and over for different angles if necessary. Bernie Mac’s show was shot with a single camera like films. Being in front of the camera is irrelevant. Just fyi.

Bernie Mac is a LEGEND but as everyone will tell you "I ain't scared of you motha****" is the one that first set him apart. Facing the toughest crowd that had been chewing up all the other comics.
America wasn't offended by everything back then. He was one of the comedy greats and actually crossed over to mainstream with his TV show. Also around the time, it's interesting to note a lot of the original Kings of Comedy, Def Jam and black comediens in general, crossed over as well (i.e. Martin Lawerence, Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, etc). Comedy was thriving back then and everyone pushed the envelope.

Bernie Mac in real life was a very good dad and husband and was married for years to the same woman. And his kids adored him. He was more soft spoken and didn't curse on his show which was more realistic to how he was.

This spawned what we know as the Bernie Mac show. The show centered around Bernie, his wife and the three children. It was a sitcom and it really was enduring. Sweet show.
