The Umayyad dynasty lasted less than 100 years but Rome? Rome is immortal. The physical Roman Empire lasted over 1000 years. A Roman state has existed in one form or another in an almost totally unbroken sequence since 753 BC up until modern day with Vatican City and the Roman Catholic Church. The ancient Roman institutions and traditions live on in some form or another and influence almost every facet of culture in the west.
Islam as a whole has had a similar effect upon the Middle East and beyond but the empire that founded those cultural influences was not as illustrious as Rome.

About three thousand years ago, the largest empire of the ancient world was born in a swampy area on the banks of the Tiber River. At first, only a handful of people lived on the mosquito-infested hills, but a few centuries later the Romans seized the entire territory of modern Italy. And not only. Where once there was a hotbed of malaria, an empire grew up, owning fifty provinces.
