The Swedish nicknames of the actors hints on their true identity ("Joff & Mia" = Joseph & Mary)

14:22 The pace of this movie is just perfect. No need for "The Eighth Seal" ...

Lovely review, informed and sympathetic. Nice that you take on a classic from my old native country... My own favourite of Bergman's is Wild Strawberries, about an old man reliving his youth. Please try to see it if you get the chance. I received your book today and will read it as soon as I've finished the current book, the diary of Warren Lewis, brother of C.S. Lewis.

I felt a little bored by the comedy scenes and got lost with pacing at times. But the powerful scenes caught my attention. That last scene where the camera pulls in on the girl and she says "It's finished," I loved it.

Fair enough. Certainly more pluses than minuses.

David Lynch should do the remake.
Maybe he already did. It's not always easy to know what his films are really about, and I have the feeling Lynch's "seventh seal" would look nothing like the original.

Thank you for the very enjoyable review. As for the remake, I can think of many who could have done it, from Kurosawa to Andre Wajda, Alain Resnais or Fellini, or Norman Jewison, or even Copolla. Why not But they all left it alone and I think that's a good thing.

human thought he could cheat death. But death cheated human by making him reveal his strategy in chess... So did death cheated, or is it simple inevitable?

The Black Plague took place between 1346 and 1353, and that is the 14th Century, NOT the 12th Century as the narrator says. It is always good to check your history facts before making commentaries about historic events.

Try Wild Strawberries, Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Fanny and Alexander, The Magican and many more, lots of great to find with Bergman.

Yes, it's 60 years old, but in my opinion, great films can stand the test of time.
"The Phantom Carriage" is a silent Swedish film from 1921, but it's still a great and influential film which was imitated by directors like Stanley Kubrick and got Ingmar Bergman interested in making films.

Not that old, relative to when film actually became an artform i.e. the 1920s
