Great list my friend. Unto Others and Tribulation for sure are magnificent. 200 Stab Wounds was just pipped off my top ten, but I've loved that album. Opeth and Blood Incantation were part of my 'honourable mentions' for this years AOY list. I think mainly because I've not spent enough time with them. I've still not got around to listening to the Cure's new one. That's for over the 'festive period' lol. Hope you and Mrs Tris have a wonderful Christmas and New Year! All the best mate. S.
I enjoyed hearing about the non-metal albums included, interesting to learn about these. My favs of the year (not featured in your list) are Rezn and Julie Christmas. Would love to see an anticipated albums of 2025 video soon, as you suggested at the end. Thanks for all the great videos this year !
Great second video, very much enjoyed that including the analysis of each album. I have some more to check out. I have tried with Knocked Loose but just cannot get past the vocals. Great that you included your non-metal selections. At the end of the day, these were the albums you enjoyed. I do not believe in guilty pleasures and I like what I like. I went from 8 to 18 in the 1980s so I very much grew up with metal but also very influential pop. This year I saw both Cattle Decapitation and Pet Shop Boys live! I hope that you do an video of what you are looking forward to in 2025. Keep up the great work and thanks for the support and kind comments you give to my writing too. Here are my Top 40 albums of the year 40: Tyr 39: Infected Rain 38: Final Coil 37: Dark Tranquillity 36: FM 35: Job For A Cowboy 34: Bruce Dickinson 33: Rotting Christ 32: Leprous 31: Attic Theory 30: Vanden Plas 29: 200 Stab Wounds 28: Tribulation 27: Winterfylleth 26: Magnum 25: The Cure 24: earthtone9 23: Belore 22: Stryper 21: Saxon 20: Disconnected Souls 19: Wheel 18: Hideous Divinity 17: Luna Sees 16: Forndom 15: Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks 14: Public Service Broadcasting 13: Judas Priest 12: Evergrey 11: Blaze Bayley 10: Steve Hackett 9: Nine Stones Close - Diurnal 8: Opeth 7: Blood Incantation 6: Eivor 5: Anciients 4: Suldusk 3: Ihsahn 2: Nine Stones Close - Adventures in Anhedonia 1: Borknagar - Fall
Great list as always bro! Bunch of crossover with my top ten, still can't decide between Knocked Loose and Blood Incantation for my AOTY though, such different records but I fucking love both of them. Amazing year for metal and metal adjacent records 🤘
Cool stuff. Here's my top 30. All of the albums are metal, but that's what resonates with me, and I haven't heard much of anything else besides the top acclaimed pop and indie albums, which didn't do much for me. I've only listened to like 50 albums from this year, as I've spent much more time digging in to many 90's to 2010's albums. In my opinion, there are no 10/10 albums this year, but a handful of 9-9.5/10. The past 3 years, I scored one 10/10 each year (Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse, Krallice - Crystalline Exhaustion and Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite). I simply rank upon what I enjoy listening to the most, not what is "objectively best". 30. Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To 29. SUMAC - The Healer 28. Pallbearer - Mind Burns Alive 27. Apogean - Cyberstrictive 26. Spectral Voice - Sparagmos 25. Hamferð - Men Guðs hond er sterk 24. Kvadrat - The Horrible Dissonance of Oblivion 23. Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God
thanks so much mate! I've just seen that your picks were Jerry Cantrell and we shared Necrot / BI / Judas Priest / JFAC and Opeth! A couple of other ones with Skeletal Remains and Nile which I think is very valid but I wish that the Kerry King record I found was as good!
Always leave a comment on your album of the year videos, plss keep going! LOVED Knocked Loose, Better Lovers, Nails, Spectral Wound, Oranssi Pazuzu, Full of Hell and Thou this year
I love how for the most part your picks are on the more mellow side, and then 200 Stab Wounds comes in LOL. You've also shown me a band I've never heard of in High Vis! A very diverse list, and I genuinely respect that you've simply incorporated your favourite albums whether they be metal or not because not pigeon holing yourself is truly important. Thank you for another year of wonderful content and engagement. Cheers!
Well that's the thing I think! At the end of the day, music is music isn't it?! Great picks man! Bedsore was one of the bands I was going to do a final review of this year but just ran out of time sadly. Slumlord is a great one for sure. As ever, a lot of stuff that I've never heard of haha! I'll definitely be checking out the Spotify link especially for your album of the year! I always massively respect your opinion and the level that you go into for your discovery of new music, it's far more detailed than what I do hahaha! Have a truly wonderful Christmas and I'll make a start on my little playlist too!
@TheMetalTris dude you are too kind. I have a huge resource in Heavymusichq where I find a good chuck of my obscure finds. The rest I'm introduced to by TH-camrs and my best friend from childhood. My wife also finds some real gems. I do the most fun part, which is listing, and I lisuen anywhere i can be it waking my dog, being outdoors with my son, downtime during the day job you name it. Hope you enjoy the playlist my friend.
Nice and killer list Tris! I will check out some albums I have not heard yet! I definitely enjoyed Undeath, 200 SW, Blood Incantation, JFAC, Touché Amore, Chelsea Wolf, and KL! Can’t wait for more content from you for 2025. My best albums of 2024 is on my channel and check it out if you like. Cheers!
Great picks! I love The Cure's new album. Tribulation's new album has some of the catchiest songs I've heard all year! If you loved that new Blood Incantation album and wanted to hear something like that but in a more blackened quirky prog direction, check out Bedsore's new album. It's *FANTASTIC*!
Ohhh man, Bedsore! I love that band. I was actually definitely trying to review Dreaming the Strife for Love - it kind of gave me an original Wizard of Oz meets ELP kind of vibe with hints of Death thrown in there as well. I might do a little short of it maybe if I have the time. I made all my notes and everything but I remember that the week it was coming out I had to go on holiday and I just ran out of time. Great recommendation though, that record is great and has a little more light to it than Hypnagogic Hallucinations!
@ I was highly anticipating the album because I loved Hypnagogic Hallucinations when it came out back in 2020. Didn’t disappoint one bit and I actually have listened to it more than Absolute Elsewhere.
Hell yeah man! Thanks for tuning in once again and being subscribed for all these years too. Means the world and glad to have your support from the City of Angels! Speaking of which, I am currently watching Die Hard hahaha
Totally, this was the year for it right?! Though I definitely need to try and give Iotunn another listen for sure. I didn't listen to In Vain at all though so will check that out and Dvne are great too!
great minds think alike as they say -Opeth - The Last Will and Testament -Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere -ANCIIENTS - Beyond the Reach of the Sun -Job for a Cowboy - Moon Healer -Lowen - Do Not Go To War With The Demons Of Mazandaran -Oceans of Slumber - Where Gods Fear To Speak -Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God -De Mal en Pire - Sã Mo -Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatastrophe -Alcest - Les Chants De L'Aurore
Hell yeah! This is a great list. I have to say, that I did think that Alcest might be in mine and for a while it was! For some reason I just couldn't get into oceans of Slumber and I thought that Ulcerate were pretty great too but there were different styles that I liked a little more. Kanonenfieber were great too! Need to give Lowen another go as well. Never heard of De Mal en Pire before, what kind of music are they?!
So there's a couple here that I've never heard of! Bipolar Architecture KIZ Floya Carnosus I'll definitely give them a listen but that's a nice and varied list! I feel like King Gizz slowed down this year only releasing the one album haha - still great though, did you listen to Petradragonic Apocalypse last year? That was a great record too!
You know what a lot of people have been mentioning Iotunn but for some reason that record just didn't really resonate with me. I'll give it another go, I like the Anciients record as well but might need to check some of the others out again as well. Borknagar are great too! Definitely an underrated band them!
I'd probably put blood incantation as the album of the decade so far. It just feels so unanimously loved because it's that good. Kind of like the satanist by behemoth where it's so rare to find anyone that dislikes it.
That's a good comparison actually! It definitely has that kind of vibe of 'The Satanist' - like the barometer has been set so high and it was pretty much, like you say unanimously hailed as one of the best records of the year!
@TheMetalTris as you said there's a reason it was so many people's aoty! This was my top 20. Your list always has more than a few crossovers with mine every year haha 1) Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere 2) Gaerea - Coma 3) 200 Stab Wounds - Manual Manic Procedures 4) Dvne - Voidkind 5) Opeth - The Last Will and Testament 6) Ulcerate - Ctting The Throat of God 7) Spectral Wound - Songs of Blood and Mire 8) Undeath - More Insane 9) Fit For An Autopsy - The Nothing That Is 10) Wormwitch - Wormwitch 11) Dodsrit - Nocturnal Will 12) Zeal and Ardor - Greif 13) Gatecreeper - Dark Superstition 14) Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To 15) Blood Red Throne - Nonagon 16) Alcest - Les Chants De I'Aurore 17) Aborted - Vault Of Horrors 18) Job For A Cowboy - Moon Healer 19) Benighted - Ekbom 20) The Infernal Sea - Hellfenlic
@TheMetalTris Also we were on exactly the same page with Knocked Loose. I couldn't stand them but it was the Jimmy Kimmel (?) performance with Poppy that made me go 'oh.. I get it now' and going back and listening to the album was the turning point. It would have been higher on my list but this all happened only a couple of weeks before I put the list together. But it's a phenomenonal album.
Great picks, not surprised about Blood Incantation being number 1 :) Here is my top 15 1) Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere 2) Ihsahn - Ihsahn 3) Borknagar - Fall 4) Opeth - The Last Will And Testament 5) Necrot - Lifeless Birth 6) Cemetery Skyline - Nordic Gothic 7) Striker - Ultrapower 8) Nile - The Underworld Awaits Us All 9) Saxon - Hell, Fire And Damnation 10) Wintersun - Time II 11) Blitzkrieg - Blitzkrieg 12) IOTUNN - Kingship 13) Winterfylleth - The Imperious Horizon 14) Paysage D’Hiver - Die Berge 15) Dwarrowdelf - The Fall of Leaves
Hahaha I thought that quite a lot of people would guess that it might have been my number 1. Glad to see Winterfylleth and Ihsahn both in there (they're ones that I work with!) and there's some great titles here too. I need to give Cemetery Skyline another listen and try Striker / Wintersun and Dwarrowdelf too!
Good list! Borknagar topped my list. What an album. It was a pleasure to interview Oystein too! Ihsahn, Blood Incantation and Ihsahn all made my top ten too. Winterfylleth and Saxon made my overall list.
@@pyro609That seemed to be the majority opinion. Just keep in mind -2.-2 wasn't meant to be a proper full length (just an experiment with the new bassist), and Dark V is still planned.
Yes mate! I also had some that were similar to Señorita Sabrosura too! The Smile I thought was cool and I liked that St Vincent record too, need to spend more time with that and of course The Cure too!
Not to take anything away from Blood Incantation but I'm not sure I agree the album is "groundbreaking" - blending DM with prog rock is hardly anything new, Nocturnus, Atheist and Cynic did in 1990...
Hmmm, I kind of agree with you on that. There's definitely Prog Rock moments on Focus / Elements and Unquestionable Presence for sure but for me it's the breadth of all of the different subgenera that they have incorporated into one album that always brings my jaw to the floor! But that's totally fair, at the end of the day there is no right or wrong answer it's just music!
Has anyone check out Blighted Eye - AGONY'S BESPOKE? Great album, favourite songs outro track Agony`s bespoken and Reverent Stillness!
My favorites are much more into the black metal genre but Tribulation is my #1
Oh awesome! What other kind of Black Metal bands are there? Tribulation for number 1 is always a good one as far as I'm concerned!
I'd probably put blood incantation as the album of the decade so far. It just feels so unanimously loved because it's that good. Kind of like the satanist by behemoth where it's so rare to find anyone that dislikes it.

18) Job For A Cowboy - Moon Healer
19) Benighted - Ekbom
20) The Infernal Sea - Hellfenlic
@TheMetalTris Also we were on exactly the same page with Knocked Loose. I couldn't stand them but it was the Jimmy Kimmel (?) performance with Poppy that made me go 'oh.. I get it now' and going back and listening to the album was the turning point. It would have been higher on my list but this all happened only a couple of weeks before I put the list together. But it's a phenomenonal album.
Great picks, not surprised about Blood Incantation being number 1 :) Here is my top 15
1) Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
2) Ihsahn - Ihsahn
3) Borknagar - Fall
4) Opeth - The Last Will And Testament
5) Necrot - Lifeless Birth
6) Cemetery Skyline - Nordic Gothic
7) Striker - Ultrapower
8) Nile - The Underworld Awaits Us All
9) Saxon - Hell, Fire And Damnation
10) Wintersun - Time II
11) Blitzkrieg - Blitzkrieg
12) IOTUNN - Kingship
13) Winterfylleth - The Imperious Horizon
14) Paysage D’Hiver - Die Berge
15) Dwarrowdelf - The Fall of Leaves
Hahaha I thought that quite a lot of people would guess that it might have been my number 1. Glad to see Winterfylleth and Ihsahn both in there (they're ones that I work with!) and there's some great titles here too. I need to give Cemetery Skyline another listen and try Striker / Wintersun and Dwarrowdelf too!
Appreciate the Nile and Paysage d'Hiver mentions....no love for Darkspace though? (acknowledge they're two halfs of the same mind lol)
@@PadanFain-yp2yz As much as I love Darkspace, their latest album didn't click for me like the previous albums. Bit too much ambient for me
We have a few in common. I thought Knocked Loose was overrated as well and they made my top 5 as well. We have the same #1 I knew it.
Yes mate! I also had some that were similar to Señorita Sabrosura too! The Smile I thought was cool and I liked that St Vincent record too, need to spend more time with that and of course The Cure too!
@ first time in 3 years that Señorita and me had one pick in common.
