  • Remember that discussion we had, "we are destroying the BMS industry", here is another example where we stop just short of providing high value and end up opening the door to 3rd party technology providers.

Hi! We build Energymanagement software and I am responsible for the UI/UX. Thank you for the valuable insight, I will indeed schedule a meeting for next week! Cheers

Great video Bryce, I see this all the time. First of all you need the right and reliable metering that is in some projects already a problem. Without this and the points in your video it's complete useless and expensive for nothing.
    Again a great video 👍👍

    Hi Bryce,
I am project engineer for EMS and I agree with you on how data visualization is a must when it comes to achieving energy efficiency through energy monitoring.

Great video once again. Biggest failure in the BMS industry is the use of the data that it continuously collects. Analyzing data (consumption vs operating conditions) should be a key facture in developing dashboards. Monitoring and analyzing the building should be simple and quick.

Agree, we are not good at using the data that we collect. Cloud hosted tech companies are much better at visualising data. And it helps them win work from us.

Very good presentation, Bryce. Unfortunately, no one ( I mean the builder, the mechanical contractor) wants to pay the BMS subcontractor to do all this fancy works but they’re willing to pay through the nose for 3rd party solutions.

For sure they wont pay for that. But, what happens is, we leave the door open and then a 3rd party system comes along and earns a monthly subscription, for the EMS, for the next 10 years.
This year a $4M or or BMS system handed over. Within 3 months a 3rd party analytics system was installed. I am busy reviewing the BMS companies maintenance proposal, which has a subscription cost for analytics.
Well, sorry guys, we wont have that, someone else beat you to it.
If they had just absorbed the analytics engineering cost during the construction phase, they would be earning $30k - $50k per year for a bit of software.
I am now going to completely restructure their BMS maintenance contract to align them with the analytics provider.

    Hi Sir,
Thank you for explaining EMS in details with Application and Benefits.
As you mentioned that RS485 Based Meter in Video, really it's very complicated to cabling at time of Installation for larger setup...for overcoming this problem we Very unique and Innovative Solution for EMS which is Based on Wi-Fi

Niagara Tridium has a software parts as Analytics that can help in monitoring building energy efficency. I suppose is not the single one ....

In general I agree with the video, but chiller COP is not a good way to go for efficiency. The energy you save producing higher temperature chilled water, you then waste in the Air Handlers to move more air. You actually reduce the efficiency of the whole system, because the air handlers drain more power. You have to look at the whole picture, not just the chillers/cooling towers/pumps. Unless you have a thermal storage, which is a rare animal.

      @bryceanderson17  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello.
That is exactly what I have said in the video. Calculate the COP of the entire chilled water system, so that when we reduce the condenser water temperature, or increase the chilled water temperature, that we can properly understand the true affect on the whole system, and not just the COP of the chiller.
This video discusses what you have said about chilled water temperature resets: th-cam.com/video/KUNsG2BOwp0/w-d-xo.html
And, this video discusses a similar principle regarding lowering condenser water: th-cam.com/video/1ZJJydMkotk/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks for your support :-)

@@bryceanderson17 I meant to say that you don't take the air handlers in this calculation. When you increase the chiller water temperature the air handler won't be able to make the setpoint. Then the VAV will need more CFMs. Then the air handler will increase speed to maintain the duct static. Then the "savings" from the chilled water temperature is wasted in the air handlers. I agree on reset of the chilled water temperature, but it must be done with caution.

We are talking about exactly the same thing here, I am not sure why you think I am not considering the AHU coils?
      In this video: th-cam.com/video/KUNsG2BOwp0/w-d-xo.html
I discuss 100% exactly what you are saying. Increasing the chiller set-point results in the chilled water pumps pumping harder and using more power, which offsets some of the saving the chiller made.
In this Energy Management System visualisation video, I simply touch on that same example, by saying engineers need to build a virtual meter, that totals the power consumption of the chiller, condenser water pump, cooling tower fan, AND the chilled water pumps. Because, as you say, we need to understand the increasing pumping power when we reset the chiller temperature.
At some point, raising the chiller temperature will result in the OVERALL system being less efficient - I agree with what you are saying.
But, until we build the virtual meters and start to study the relationship between increasing chiller temperature, reducing chiller power consumption AND increasing chiller pump. we will never know where the sweet spot is, or completely understand this complex relationship.
I hope you now see that we are are the same page :-)
