    This was a great video and something I have wondered about for a long time. I often look up videos to find ways to repurpose old tech. (And I love Commodore so that was a plus) This was an option I wasn't expecting and didn't know was available for these panels.
    In the end at least for myself I don't think this is worth it. The driver boards cost in Canada about $35 plus shipping plus everything else that is required to make it a finished project it just becomes too prohibitive. A brand new low cost tablet and a cheap HDMI input adapter can be had for about $100-$$120 and you get a hire res screen and a more modern finished project.
    Perhaps it might work better with as some have suggested a newer iPad as the donner with a hire res screen.

    Amazing video! Made my old broken iPad with only the screen working into a second monitor for my pc.
    iPads have amazing screens even the old ones so this is a great repurpose for a cheap price. Thanks for making this video, replicated your steps with ease.

      iPads make for great monitors. The screens (even on the iPad 1) are really good and the driver boards work fine. It's almost plug&play. iPad 1 & iPad2 even use the same displays (and you can use the same driver boards).

  • @AndrewHelgeCox
    @AndrewHelgeCox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think it could make sense to keep the display in the original housing if the glass isn’t scratched. It would be hard to get such a clean finish in something home made. Only the home button makes it obvious this was part of an iPad but maybe that could be covered up. Edit: I’ve since seen the luggable Amiga project where this face wouldn’t have worked.

    • @RetroWK
      @RetroWK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That‘s true. If you are using the iPad standalone that is the way to go. You could fit the driverboard in there somehow and maybe even use the battery to have a full mobile screen.

    • @AndrewHelgeCox
      @AndrewHelgeCox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroWK maybe print a plastic shim between face and metal back to thicken the iPad to fit the driver board in and allow cables/connectors on the edge. A fun project.

    This exactly the kind of experiment I’m trying to do with an iPad 4, very cool and informative video. I’m trying to make a DIY laptop. Is it possible to put the screen on a hinge and run the ribbon cable through the hinge to the base of a laptop? I wonder if the cable is too fragile for opening and closing a lid.

    i mean, how could it be possible to know the compatibility of different sort of speakers of apple, to plug 2021 speakers on 2015 macbook pro ... or switch it up and change the mac-mini speaker to having more powerful one, or maybe how can we freely use them on anything else ?
    how cool it could be to recycle apple speakers to put it in something else ...

I have a iPad 2 that I just charged up 2 days ago after being in a drawer for 2 to 3 years, but when I tried to add some new Video streaming apps they said wont work with this IOS. I'll have to check thingyverse to see if someone had made the plans to print out a case to hold the screen and also that board and controls board. I have also bought three 1084S from three different sellers, but will need to find someone to help me make One or two working 1084S. one of them in original box has a perfect case!!! No yellowing and not a scratch and all books. The other two have beat-up dirty cases. One of those has a nice picture from the screen shots with games running. The other one's case is a bit beat up put but no where as bad as the other one that's working. It comes on but only if you hold in the power switch and turns off when you let go of the switch. That will be a project down the road because I want to find the right person to do the job since I don't want to kill myself with CRT's high voltage!!! Nope, the touchscreen does not work. The logic for that sits on the iPad mainboard. It could be doable, but I didn't try. You would have to leave the iPad in place for that and somehow manage to connect it via USB to the device (PC, Console etc.) to support touch.

    Is there any way to get the touchscreen working too with for example a raspberry pi?

      I looked into this but couldn't find any info on how to drive the touch sensor. I am pretty sure, that the whole logic for this lies in the iPad and not in the touch sensor itself. So you would have to come up with your own controller via arduino or something. I might try that in the future. Until then, there is only the screen without the touch.
