Same. I can't wait for the variegation trend to end. I'm so sick of everything about houseplants just being endless new variegated varieties and people in houseplant groups asking "Is my plant variegated or sick?" People are literally admitting that they can't tell the difference. They look unwell and they are less hardy and usually have more problems. What I understand even less are the really deformed cultivars like Epipremnum 'Shangri-La' (looks like boiled spinach), Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' (looks like the leaf has been eaten) and Alocasia 'Stingray' (another one that looks eaten ... and now there's a variegated one too, as if it didn't already look sick enough ...).
I've become obsessed with plants lately... like REALLY obsessed. And I've gotta be honest, I don't really understand plant trends. Just get what you want to get. I began my Aeroid journey by falling in love with your P. Atabopoense. I went searching for one and quickly realized that there was a world of plants out there not being offered for sale at my local big box stores or nurseries. The search was such fun! I ended up driving 3 hours round trip to pick it up once I found it. At that time the P. Spiritus Sancti was the unicorn plant of the moment; demanding thousands of dollars. This past weekend I was at a sale where Spirtus Sancti cuttings were $50. I almost pounced until I realized it had similar vibes as the Atabopoense and I already had that leaf shape in my collection. I actually agonized for a few moments. Clearly the “hunt” for new “rare” plants is a big part of our hobby.
Suppose we all love getting new plants & it can bring a lot of joy (i get new plants here & there) ... I just don't agree with getting a plant just for the sake of the plant being 'rare' .... it's just tapping into this fomo / consumerism mindset that we don't need more of in my opinion :)

So glad someone else kinda sees the current anthurium thing the same way I do. I have to switch when someone's "anthurium tour" comes on YT, because 95% of them look the same to me. Not to mention needing an anthurium dictionary to know wtf anyone is talking about with these names. I appreciate when I see a mature, full specimen, that's been well taken care of, but everyone now just has indoor greenhouses with 500 tiny pots full of one-leafed anthurium hybrids that all look the same. So, basically like you with hoyas 😅
I believe people get a bunch of seedlings for the potential of what they can look like eventually. I do agree with you that, generally, anthurium seedlings don't make for an exciting plant tour. The anthurium genus is very diverse, morphologically, and they are exciting to grow because their emergent leaves start off really small but then expand and can go through a vast color and texture change while they do so.
I….I???! have a plant you don’t think you can keep alive?!? My variegated (white not pink!) black velvet and I just shook in our boots. Lord help us. Beautiful fun video as always! Love your honest perspectives and humor :)

Love love love this kind of video. I know what you mean about price...we try not to factor it in but when the prices are so ridiculously high its hard not to be put off haha. I like a lot of the pink variegation in this, but would wait until more reasonably priced. Loved the monsteras (but I have a soft spot for monstera!) I generally really like anthuriums but to my untrained eye, at some point a lot of the millions of hybrids start to look pretty much the same. There are some that are noticeably different but I don't have the willpower to learn all the terminology and physical differences lol
Those pink variegated Alocasia are my favorites. I grow with my 6 year old daughter and her favorite color is pink. Her excitement makes it more fun for me!

Love this and its very interesting how varied prices are.. I like varigation but tend to stick to just green. Although I did get a Thai for xmas last year.
The monstera deliciosa tricolor is absolutely to die for and I have been on the hunt for about 3-4 mths but no luck so far and if I have found one, it’s a price I would not pay. I refuse to pay the prices some of these plants go for because I know one day the price will come down and I will get it then. I’m not a trendy plant person, if I love the way a plant looks, I get it, popular or not. I’m not in a competition, I am an empty nester that has found something that I love and gives me joy.
And so much more rewarding to be patient & then pick one up at a reasonable price :) love that last sentence !! It does seem that rare plant collecting is a competitive sport at this stage :D

I do prefer white variegation over yellow, mint isn’t too bad.great video Yan. 💚🪴🌿🫶🏻 Natalie
Def found some new plants I want from this video I could not however imagine anyone spending 40k on a plant lol that's insanity to me . Can def tell you're an animal person for respecting Brad relaxation space and not disrupting his process just to show us a plant 😂❤
The Monstera devil for 40k was absolutely hideous! I wouldn't have that in my house unless someone paid me 50k to keep it (out of sight). I love the dark Anthurium (Carlablackii) though!
Hey Jan, the variegated vittarifolium is very easy to care for - just as easy as the green one. The secret is finding one with nice variegation. I absolutely love mine.
When it comes to varegation, the Alocasia Frydek is the only plant, I really appreciate. I totally agree with you, it either looks sick or like bird poop 😅 The only plant on my wishlist is the verucosum amazon sunset
I have to agree that I was not into the venom alocasia either. It gave me spooky vibes, like a scary plant movie or something. I did like most of the ones you liked, however, I would not purchase any of them due to the pricing. Anything over $40 for a 4" pot is not coming home with me on average. I think that people are so determined to get something to say they have it and I find that to be not the best trait to have as human beings. I love how everyone was talking about the pink princess, paying hundreds (high hundreds) of dollars for it and now it sells for $9.99 in a decorative 4" pot in a supermarket...LOL! Even the Thai Constellation was selling for high hundreds and you can find them for $39.99 or less (depending on the pot size). If you have the needed patience instead of jumping on a trend, you will pay about 90% less in price for the same plant.
Here in Argentina the variegated Vittariifolium is everywhere, I totally prefer the normal green version. On the other hand, the Anthurium Wendlingerii, Ceronii (super easy to care for in my experience), Pallidiflorum and Luxurians are trending. As for my personal wishlist plants, in my top favorites are Hoya Serpens, Hoya Tengchongensis Hoya Pubicalyx pink silver ghost 👻
Love this video! Very interesting to see the trends around the world! Some of the prices blow my mind, but that’s just me. I personally don’t follow trends but to each their own.
I love burle marx flame and devil monster lol. But I definitely wouldn’t pay either price. I’ve seen BMF prices coming down rapidly in UK where I’m located though, so I’m hoping to add this to my collection at some point. Loved this video! 😊
I agree with you regarding the monsteras, I think that Thai cons and albos are the most striking variegation. Carnivorous plants are the best! I have a particular fondness for pitcher plants/nepenthes, especially the red variegated ones like the black miracle. They're so beautiful and eat flies, mosquitos and even wasps which is a major plus living in Florida.
loved the video! when you do part 2, let us know your top five "coup de coeur". I don't have a monstera, no space for that, but in a bigger house I would get one. I also like the plant that is behind you, with the long drooping leaves, I would like to try one.
I agree with almost all your ratings. I also don’t like the yellow and pink variegations. This concept works for me and look forward to more. I’m not and don’t plan to be into begonias however that seems to be a huge trend.
Hi, I submitted the hyped Alocasia Venom, I don't like it but it's big in europe. I also submitted the Alocasia Cuprea Pink, this one I want so bad for 2 years now. I already have many variegated Alocasias, most doing really good (knock on wood). Yes, make more of these! Just hang out and talk harsh about prices and overrated plants haha.
Omg, I love unfiltered Jan!!👏🏾 I had the same reactions for the Thai constellation miracle and the Alocasia venom. I think for me, the venom just looks like a deformed leaf right, and to plant growers, the plant looks unhealthy. There is some charm to it I suppose, but I share the same sentiments.😅😅 The Thai con miracle is now at the top of my wishlist! It looks SOO pretty! I’m absolutely miserable with alocasias, but seeing all these variants makes me want to try them again. I just got an Alo dragon scale for $8 bucks so I’m trying again! Wish me luck!🤞🏾 I saw a Philodendron orange princess recently, and that is also at the top of my list!
Totally agree, the Monstera Devil Monster or whatever the name looks straight ugly...It has the same variegated style on its leaves as Vittariifolium, so its leaves also look deformed.
I love the Thai con can’t remember what it was called so pretty with the tricolour. Totally agree some just look ill. I do have a burl Marx flame and personally love it but the plant I am most excited about at the moment is my new el choco red it’s so stunning 😍 but not rare or new in the uk x
I think the internet sometimes makes us believe a plant needs to be 'rare' or 'new' for us to be excited about it ... and by internet I mean plant sellers :D hehe
this was great, I'm so very much like you, the pink alocasia's don't float my boat at all(cracked up at the bird poop comment 🤣), and I don't really like the yellow variegated ones either, so out of all those that were shown, only about 4 sparked an interest, and 3 out of 4 were the anthurium's 😒🦦
I don't enjoy the pink variegation also, but yellow is nice in my opinion - yellow alocasias could be awesome 😁 jacklyn and brancifolia for example 💛 I'm a little bit shocked that there's no aglaonema or diffenbachia. Thanks for the video 👍
I just want to share why I love the Burle Marx Flame. It’s because the only place on earth they have found it is in Roberto Burle Marx’ personal garden. Every plant in existence came from that original plant- I have a lot of respect for him as the botanist and gardener he was…. I got mine from tissue culture ($60) in January and he’s 10 months old, 12” tall and just gave me his first fenestrated leaf.
Ooooh 😍🤩 love the Miracle Monstera 💚! So many different greens in one leaf. Too many Alocasias for me, and Alocasia Venom looks like perfect creepy monster halloween plant. Needs a Mandrake to go with it.
Hey Jan, this video was very entertaining and YES please do more. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the personal preference thing, mainly because my taste in plants is completely opposite to yours. So you gave me few good laughs with your opinions on for instance the Anthurium sp. nov "DF" or the Monstera Devil Monster. I´ve never been interested in trends or hypes. My clothes have to be comfortable and functional. My cats are special-needs, because it makes them different and "less desirable". And for my plants I also gravitate to the weird ones. Odd shapes and forms and lots of pubescence are my main preferences. Liebe Grüße aus deiner alten Heimat.
I have a baby Monstera Aurea LF and SF. Large form was $99 from FM (baby) and got a two leaf plant for same pice SM from enliven Also from watching you, I’m getting into my carnivorous plants as well and there’s a aquarium in Orange NSW near me that I will be visiting either Saturday or next week to get some ❤
Omg 😂 I died with your venom opinion. I’ve been seeing them in Los Angeles, to me they look melted. I would take one. And then have a million headaches! Alocasias struggle to live in my care! I do have a variegated frydek that gave up on life, and I hadn’t gotten around to removing everything in the pot. There’s actually a tiny baby white and green little sprout now which I’m so over the moon with!!!❤😂😂😮
Thank you for some Nice entertainment before heading of to campus for the day. Agree with you on the pink, and I love variegation, but deceased-looking plants: no thank you! Love from Norway
The Devil Monster would be an absolute dream plant if it had a regular deliciosa shape and symmetry. I think the plant market trows with new varieties left and right now, but at a cost of robustness, symmetry and quality of variegation.
When I started with plants I was all about the trending plants but now I’m more about getting something with a unique leaf. Not necessarily expensive or trendy but different
If I remeber right, the Devil monster was a gift from China to a Japanese guy. There were a few monstera that just randomly mutated. As in, no one did that to them. They just did it themselves. :)
I don't know if anyone will see this, but I have a question about oxalis care. I recently bought a purple shamrock, but it came in a REALLY moisture retaining soil. I know that if i try to remove the soil all of the foliage will just die and i'll basically just be digging out the rhizomes. Do you recommend that i remove it from the old soil and repot it anyways or should i leave it be? It is almost time for winter but i will be keeping it under a strong grow light. I guess if the whole plant dies off and i change the soil it'll also make sure there are no pests, but i don't know.
Can’t say I was that blown away with what I saw. I do like some variegated plants but not all, some are just plain ugly with a huge price tag because they are variegated. I’m not fussed on variegated anthuriums at all. It was their striking white veining I fell in love with & there I stay. The pink variegation doesn’t give me “got to have it vibes”, maybe if I saw it in the flesh?? I recently bought a Monstera Flame, I was struck by the flame like leaves. I splashed out $150 for what looks like a silverbeet seedling 😂😂 It’s still alive so fingers crossed 🤞 I am in love with the Spiritus Sancti though, so that can go on my wish list in the hopes it has a price drop before I die 😂😂 That was a lot of fun Jan & I look forward to the next one 👍👍👏👏
Not currently adding anymore plants here. I have a pretty good sample of everything I've wanted to collect. Interesting to see what others are finding trendy though, thanks.😻
Love the creepy look of the white Monster, but it probably wouldn’t do well in my dryer conditions I’m not a spiritus sancti fan, I just got my first Vittarifolium that I’m WAY more excited about, it just reminds me of a billie a bit If I’m going for a variegated variety I prefer white too, not a big aurea fan I don’t believe a Venus flytrap is more rare, they’re everywhere even at our grocery stores I’d love to have a Burke marx flame, but for under 30$ The new pink variegation on plants? Naw thx looks sick to me, we have similar opinions Jan ❤ The A Venom looks like it’s melting, no thx looks like it wouldn’t last a week in my care Yaaas part 2 please!! 🙏
I have Ph.radiatum var for 9 years. It turns completely yellow very easily, green parts of leaves are not common. In Poland it is currently quite cheap.
I would love to get the philodendron spiritus Sancti but the variegated version. Maybe one day it’ll be in my collection but for now I need to wait and read about it more before purchasing it and see what else I’d like to have in my collection. Happy planting ❤🪴
Lol. So agree with you about the alocasia venom. The whotish one looked slumy to me. Kind of reminds me of the "ugliest dog" contests. Maybe the world will have ugliest plant contests now. 😅
I'm like you when it comes to yellow as a variegation color. I'm not a fan because o er the years I cut off yellowing leaves. I'm actually not a huge fan of variegation at all BUT I did buy a black velvet pink last week and am excited to see it. I also have a pathos and my frydek which I love.
Also, can you please do a spotlight on the spiritus sancti?? There’s not much on them. I had a TC that disintegrated! However, I got a more established one and it’s going ok! I would love your tips!!!

Alocasia Cuprea is my favorite Alocasia as well and there is no way I would want a variegated one personally. I have seen planty creators unbox these and my face wrinkles. 😂
variegated plants have never been the most appealing to me, the variegated Anthurium even less so. I did recently order some seeds of variegated forms from Indonesia. Not because I want them personally but variegated plants are in high demand so I might as well grow them and breed them and make a couple bucks. It is called Anthurium Circus Peanuts because the inflo is fragrant and smells like the candy.

Def found some new plants I want from this video I could not however imagine anyone spending 40k on a plant lol that's insanity to me . Can def tell you're an animal person for respecting Brad relaxation space and not disrupting his process just to show us a plant 😂❤
he's the boss !! better make him happy :)
Pretty sure they don't even exist in Australia but it was one of the nicer variegated plants on the list :)
When it comes to varegation, the Alocasia Frydek is the only plant, I really appreciate.
I totally agree with you, it either looks sick or like bird poop 😅
The only plant on my wishlist is the verucosum amazon sunset
Agree pink in variation looks weird. Same as anything that's neon green. I just feel like it needs a good feed
Although I'm not much into trendy plants, I probably wouldn't mind having one of these kinda tricolor Monstera 😅
That was definitely a standout !
I often don't like the most fancy plant but I enjoy seeing what's new. That Venom really is remarkable, huh?
Here in Argentina the variegated Vittariifolium is everywhere, I totally prefer the normal green version. On the other hand, the Anthurium Wendlingerii, Ceronii (super easy to care for in my experience), Pallidiflorum and Luxurians are trending. As for my personal wishlist plants, in my top favorites are Hoya Serpens, Hoya Tengchongensis Hoya Pubicalyx pink silver ghost 👻
Interesting to hear different trends across different countries :)
Love this video! Very interesting to see the trends around the world! Some of the prices blow my mind, but that’s just me. I personally don’t follow trends but to each their own.
If anyone things $40k for a plant isn't mind blowingly stupid, then I don't wanna know them haha :D
That's A. vittarifolium :) thanks !
Just hang out and talk harsh about prices and overrated plants haha.
thanks for submitting !! You definitely gave us some good entertainment :) hehe ! Oh, plenty more opinions where those came from haha :D
Omg, I love unfiltered Jan!!👏🏾
I had the same reactions for the Thai constellation miracle and the Alocasia venom. Wish me luck!🤞🏾
I saw a Philodendron orange princess recently, and that is also at the top of my list!
Totally agree, the Monstera Devil Monster or whatever the name looks straight ugly...It has the same variegated style on its leaves as Vittariifolium, so its leaves also look deformed.
If it was $50 I think it would be somewhat 'interesting' .... but with that price tag ... NO CHANCE !!!
I mean I guess to each their own, but I’m with you. It’s not a pretty plant in my eyes. I guess that’s better for my budget anyway 😂
@@sydneyplantguy well here in Argentina that price tag is equivalent to a beautiful plot of land for a house near the coast, in the city where I live
@@sydneyplantguyI bought it in Indonesia last year for about $130 and it had much nicer, golden leaves than the one you showed on the internet.😊
The night dragon is actually a selected red vein dark phoenix- you could import it from Kartel Daun!
Loved this video. I’d personally enjoy a part 2.
I have a lot more unpopular opinions to share.... :D let's do it :D
this was great, I'm so very much like you, the pink alocasia's don't float my boat at all(cracked up at the bird poop comment 🤣), and I don't really like the yellow variegated ones either, so out of all those that were shown, only about 4 sparked an interest, and 3 out of 4 were the anthurium's 😒🦦
I don't enjoy the pink variegation also, but yellow is nice in my opinion - yellow alocasias could be awesome 😁 jacklyn and brancifolia for example 💛
I'm a little bit shocked that there's no aglaonema or diffenbachia.
That's a nice backstory & for $60 it's a reasonable plant to get ... over here small plants are selling for $600-$800 ....
@@sydneyplantguy ow! That’s a lot 😳
Please do a part two. Loved this ❤️
Thanks :)
I think A. 'Circus Peanuts' is named after the circus peanut candy. Its like an orange marshmallow candy 😊
Ooooh 😍🤩 love the Miracle Monstera 💚! So many different greens in one leaf. Too many Alocasias for me, and Alocasia Venom looks like perfect creepy monster halloween plant. Needs a Mandrake to go with it.
It does look like a halloween plant :D
Grüße zurück :)
I love the simple variegation on my monstera albo. ❤
Sometimes simple is better :)
I have a baby Monstera Aurea LF and SF.
Large form was $99 from FM (baby) and got a two leaf plant for same pice SM from enliven
Also from watching you, I’m getting into my carnivorous plants as well and there’s a aquarium in Orange NSW near me that I will be visiting either Saturday or next week to get some ❤
Happy growing :)
@ oh I definitely will be. I also do want that Monstera miracle as well LOL.
I have selective love for variegated plants. I love my borsi albo so so much. But some variegated plants look sickly to me.
Totally agree !! I think Alocasia Frydek is the only other plant I can think of where the variegated version is actually nicer than the green
The African Violet hybridizers have been going crazy with the names since the 80's and 90's 😭- anthurium hybrid names aren't anything too new haha
holy u have grown been with u since 10k i think gone through 2 emails in that time lol
Hehe thanks for the support since the beginning :)
There’s actually a tiny baby white and green little sprout now which I’m so over the moon with!!!❤😂😂😮
same !! Alocasia and I are NOT friends !
Thank you for some Nice entertainment before heading of to campus for the day. Agree with you on the pink, and I love variegation, but deceased-looking plants: no thank you! Love from Norway
Glad you enjoyed it :)
You just made me decide to put an alocasia cuprea on my wish list. 😂❤🎉
The Devil Monster would be an absolute dream plant if it had a regular deliciosa shape and symmetry. I think the plant market trows with new varieties left and right now, but at a cost of robustness, symmetry and quality of variegation.
100%
When I started with plants I was all about the trending plants but now I’m more about getting something with a unique leaf. Not necessarily expensive or trendy but different
Same :)
Very entertaining video! Yes please to a part 2!
If I remeber right, the Devil monster was a gift from China to a Japanese guy. There were a few monstera that just randomly mutated. As in, no one did that to them. They just did it themselves. :)
Well somebody put a $40k price tag on it and commercialised it 😜
I love the concept of this video!
Glad you do :) always looking for new video ideas :)
Variegation I like if it’s blocky and bold. I hate it on anthuriums. They look sick to me but to each their own
Agree with loving bold variegation.
Philodendron Red Anderson!!! That guy is on my wishlist, I just don't have the space right now 😢
Can’t say I was that blown away with what I saw.
Thank you :) happy growing !!
Circus peanuts has flowers that smell like a sweet that was very popular, which was called circus peanuts :)
🤯 makes sense!! Cheers :)
Awesome video 🎉. I’ve learned about some new plants too
Thanks :)
12:09 I really agree🤣🤣🤣 This plant looks like a leaf that's being attacked by pests and dying, but it's the most expensive🫠🫠
Not currently adding anymore plants here. I have a pretty good sample of everything I've wanted to collect. Interesting to see what others are finding trendy though, thanks.😻
Same!:)
If I had the $$ & the availability, I'd choose the pink Coopria & the Venom.
🤎 ur channel❣
Love the creepy look of the white Monster, but it probably wouldn’t do well in my dryer conditions
I’m not a spiritus sancti fan, I just got my first Vittarifolium that I’m WAY more excited about, it just reminds me of a billie a bit
If I’m going for a variegated variety I prefer white too, not a big aurea fan
I don’t believe a Venus flytrap is more rare, they’re everywhere even at our grocery stores
I’d love to have a Burke marx flame, but for under 30$
The new pink variegation on plants? Naw thx looks sick to me, we have similar opinions Jan ❤
The A Venom looks like it’s melting, no thx looks like it wouldn’t last a week in my care
Yaaas part 2 please!! 🙏
Part 2 it is :)
Wow I've never gotten to a video so fast 💖✨
Loved the video! Keep them coming!
That Alocasia Venom looks like a mutated cabbage, lol! Great video, would love a second one.
haha that's a pretty accurate description :D
29:59 circus peanuts because the inflo smells like circus peanuts 😊
Are we talking peanuts you get from the circus, or are we talking the candy that all the old folk in the 90's used to try and convince us was good? 😅
@@philipfoster9251 the candy!
I saw a variegated atabapoense in Miami that looked nice !! So can imagine a SS also looking decent :)
@ keep up the good work and I wish u all the best
I love this show doing this seeing what people want
Lol. So agree with you about the alocasia venom. The whotish one looked slumy to me. Kind of reminds me of the "ugliest dog" contests. Maybe the world will have ugliest plant contests now. 😅
haha omg !! I know exactly which dog you are referring to & yes, the venom looks just like him haha
100% agree that the burle marx flame is a hype plant! I can’t really see the appeal 😬
The venom is 🤮 I completely agree with you. I did get some great screenshots of plants to add to my wishlist 😊
Florida Beauty is a nice yellow variegated plant but most are looking sick
Also, can you please do a spotlight on the spiritus sancti?? There’s not much on them. I had a TC that disintegrated! However, I got a more established one and it’s going ok! I would love your tips!!!
I'm working on one ... but will take another 10 months at least :)
@@sydneyplantguy hahaha I love hearing that! It’s horrible but knowing that you have some struggles as well with how you successful you are makes us all probably feel ok! I always wish you could come to LA and fix my plants, just sprinkle some of your magic on mine please lol. They need your help! 🌱😂🪄
I think someone just got in the monstera miracle(tri colour) into australia. They were selling rooted cuttings for a few thousand $$. I was shocked that it was that cheap but also way too expensive 😢
I'll rather wait 4 years and pick it up for $20 :D
Ready for part 2/3/😂 I enjoy it 😻🌿🌱😻
Wow!! Two of my submissions made it❤amazing
Thanks for submitting them !! :)
Alocasia Cuprea is my favorite Alocasia as well and there is no way I would want a variegated one personally. I have seen planty creators unbox these and my face wrinkles. 😂
haha honestly only if every single leaf looked like the one I pointed out but we know that would never be the case :D
Positing themselves so that they look away is a sign of respect/trust in cat body language!
Positioning*
variegated plants have never been the most appealing to me, the variegated Anthurium even less so. I did recently order some seeds of variegated forms from Indonesia. Not because I want them personally but variegated plants are in high demand so I might as well grow them and breed them and make a couple bucks.
It is called Anthurium Circus Peanuts because the inflo is fragrant and smells like the candy.
Can't wait to see these at Walmart for $20 next year
Umm.. I love your honesty! I didn't see any on there that I really loved..oh lol..I'm from the south..we have a saying " Bless your heart" lol..like when you see a ugly baby! Lol..the venom vender situation! Lol
Mine wish list is Florida beauty x tortum..but not for crazy amount of money
