- These are strange stories about VHS Tapes. In 2016, James Meyers was arrested because of a warrant for a VHS tape he hadn't returned 14 years earlier. In 2020, filmmaker Jim McKay found a family’s sentimental home video when he purchased a VCR player at Goodwill. In 2021, an Oklahoma woman discovered she was a fugitive because of a “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” tape she didn’t even rent. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

At the time it's theft of property. Why wouldn't they sign it. If someone stole your things wouldn't you want them prosecuted? I understand that after all these years it became petty but not in that day and time. I'm sure all these cases the people were never in any serious trouble.

All jokes aside, it's actually really messed up that someone's life can seriously get ruined because of some secret warrant about some $10 VHS tape from 30 years ago.
I was actually arrested in 2008 for not returning ‘Sleep Over’

Bench warrants i believe. For minor things that would waste law enforcement resources seeking out the individual. Things like unreturned movies or smoking on school property.
There's no way that tape went for $10 or $58.59, although I opted for the DVD

Yes. But the lady had a warrant meaning that every time her ID goes through the system it would return the warrant. It has nothing to do with missing people.

Love this. I lost a small storage unit accidentally about 10 years ago. It contained all my family photos, USMC Memorabilia, and personal awards I received in the Marines. I feel if it had been auctioned, someone would reach out, but I think the storage place threw it out, in spite.

My wife and I transferred our family VHS tapes to a external hard drive about four months ago. We have a lot of videos of our child through the years of her since 1995 when she was a one year old.
Make sure to check the data & have a second back up on hand In most cases hard drives & any SSD won't be a great long term storage unless set up as a raid with data redundancy you might also want an off site backup for that I recommend just uploading to TH-cam as a private post so you could download a lower quality version of it in the event of a total system failure

I'm on some SVHS tapes my family recorded years 2003 to 2009! honestly i think having childhood videos on tape in a well kept box makes it more likely for them to last a long time and be watched again decades from now, i wouldn't trust Facebook to still exist in 20 years or most digital forms of media to be well kept track of, the digital world changes too quickly
The price video rental stores used to charge people for buying those tapes was the real crime.
I remember being a member at Blockbuster and also at the Furrs grocery store and it being like 99 cents per movie for like 3 nights...

The same thing happened to me on a movie I returned but it was late. I was arrested snowmobiling, taken to jail and had to be bailed out. Went to court and the judge threw it out.

I purchased a refurbished phone in 2019, the company hadn't erased the previous owners video. It was a video of a newborn baby... it was awesome.. a year later I was pregnant 😫😫😫

Oh yes! I remember when vhs tapes and video stores first came out! If you didn't rewind your tape before returning it, you were fined! If you were supposed to return the tape in 3 days and didn't the fines started! You could end up paying $100 for a $5 rental! I kid you not! They had stickers on them, "please be kind and rewind!" They were serious about it! I remember family fights starting behind rentals or not rewinding! It was a real ordeal!

My mom has a tape of my great grandparents being interviewed about their life while drunk in Vegas. I still haven't watched it because we don't have a player, but I can just imagine how hilarious it would be, and I hope to be able to see it one day.
Buy one from a thrift store. I saw portable vhs player at my thrift store and had a tiny screen attached to it.
You should get vhs player and record them because that one day will end up being the VHS is too rotten to be able to play it.
You can go an electronic store and asks the personnel there to play it for you.
You can get it transferred to a DVD!
JIM, you're a great Detective and even a more wonderful human being. A babies first step is precious. Watching ( what was once) VHS tapes, with my younger sister (13 years difference) being born & and following our upbringing brings such great times to us today. Not only do sis and I (her in her 30's & I in my late 40's ) get a kick watching them but her children find them pretty amusing. Once they had been explained who is who...lol

This kind of bothers me because I stopped going to Blockbuster video because I got tired of them telling me I turned in videos late when I know I turned them in on time. I figured it was the teenagers working behind the counter who probably weren't entering things in right so I would just go into the store and make sure they scanned it back in. That worked for a while.
I guess I forgot or didn't have time to go in at one point because one evening when I went to rent a video they told me that I never returned the last one I rented. I knew that I did, so it was a back and forth between me and the kid behind the counter before the manager came out and actually found the tape I supposedly never turned in back on the shelf, which means someone just took it out of the bin and put it back without entering that it had been returned.
I considered it to be an annoyance and stop going (Hollywood Video opened so I started going there) but I never once considered my life could be derailed over over having a whole warrant out for my arrest over something like this!
I was robbed by a former slumlord of all of my and my gf's possessions years ago, among the items that he stole were a half- dozen DVD's that we had just borrowed from a local library. We were never able to retrieve any of what the guy stole, and I repeatedly told the library where the DVD's ended up, and to bill the slumlord for the fines. The library refused to do this. I am in upstate N.Y. Nobody here seems to know what honesty is. It gets worse here daily, seems like.

My mother still has a VCR🤦🏾... they arrested him? I guess this is just for vcr tapes?. Blockbuster didn't do this. They would just charge our card for the full price of the video. I have DVD movies now I've forgotten to return from years ago.
We still have our VCR too! And like 434 VHS tapes on top of that.. sucker still works and yes, we still use it!
