Interesting to see Shelly Berman light up a cigarette during the show. This was 1961, 3 years before the Surgeon General's report on the hazards of cigarette smoking.
I knew that Julie Newmar was tall. But then to find out that she was walking during that episode without wearing shoes, let alone heels. 5'11" with 37" legs ... ironically on the same episode as Rita Gam.
That word was used twice referring to Julie Newmar in the 1995 comedy movie, "To Wong Fu, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar". She makes a cameo appearance in the film.
Miss Goldner's married name was Ormandy, but she and her husband, violinist and conductor Eugene Ormandy, got divorced in 1947. She was a harpist, and was briefly the first woman to be part of the New York Philharmonic, in the 30s. In the 50s, she was part of a bunch of Broadway shows. She died of pancreatic cancer in 1962. (Ugh.) Meanwhile, Kayaloff, married someone whose name I can't find, but it doesn't seem to have lasted, and she and her family (most of them also professional musicians) were immigrants from Russia. (Came over in 1923, when Anna was 16.) She was briefly with the Baltimore Symphony and a bunch of others, and studied with Pablo Casals at one point, and, also, played with a bunch of Broadway shows. Died in 1993 (at age 86) in Cary, North Carolina (for some reason). Was a concert pianist, but cello was what she mostly played on Broadway & in symphonies. I think Bill Long went to Vanderbilt on a football scholarship, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for the information. I was frustrated when their instruments that they play were not mentioned; Cello & Harp. And one of the women was married to Conductor, Eugene Ormandy (I remember that name since I was a kid)
FWIW, Julie Newmar's soon-to-open Bway show lasted one performance and starred Walter Matthau. It was prophetically titled "Once There Was a Russian." Believe it or not, Frank Loesser and Bob Fosse turned the play into the musical "Pleasures and Palaces," which closed trying out in Detroit.
For a first time panelist, Rita Gam was excellent. Not only was she attractive and articulate, she got a leg up with the first challenger, the second challengers couldn't hold a candle to her and she took a blind stab correctly with the mystery guest. Sadly they ran out of time in the final segment, otherwise she might have been 4 for 4. Although neither of her marriages lasted for at least ten years and both ended in divorce, whatever the reason, she attracted two husbands who had more cerebral careers than the typical actor could claim. One more husband and it might have been her that Tom Lehrer sang about rather than Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel. th-cam.com/video/8QEsdfX-Lek/w-d-xo.html

+Corleone Since that was written ~4 years ago, I am going to surmise that you wrote it before seeing Wally Cox or Victor Borge as guest panelists. Interesting to see Shelley Berman here... a famous comedian at the time who is not very well known anymore. He had a part of his act where he spoke one end of a phone conversation, a gimmick that Bob Newhart became famous for shortly after (Berman accused Newhart of stealing it).
Shelly Berman has always seemed to me to be a bitter man. He had some popularity in the 50's, but his career took a downturn after he either made some egotistical comments backstage at a show (Ed Sullivan maybe?) or berated someone backstage that turned off other performers and when word got out to the public it turned them off too. I've been trying to find the story on the internet, but to no avail. Although I did find a NY Times article that said he had an unpredictable temperament and once walked off stage during a show and ripped a ringing telephone out of the wall. Anyway, it seems maybe he wasn't an easy person to get along with. He now blames his career downfall to Bob Newhart stealing his schtick so as with many people he refuses to take responsibility for his own actions and would prefer to blame it on others. That's just my take.
Way before my time, but always great to see shows that show some insight into the Kennedy era. Also great to see the woman who would be the best Catwoman on the Batman series.... what syndication can do....
Ms. Rita Gam, when women carried their dress handbags everywhere, even if they were sitting or even standing around. A lovely handbag was an accessory as much as a necessity for that lipstick and compact, with a couple of tissues. Classy, proper.
Pamela Olson She was a stage actress but I think she was more widely known for TV games shows. Her husband was in the business also and occasionally appeared on this show.
And she proudly claims "I'm a girl!" More proof that grown-up women used that word to describe themselves then; it wasn't necessarily a put-down at the time.
I laughed when they had a girdle tester on, and Benett was trying to figure out if the female panelists wore the product....and when they found out what the product was, Arlene said "Bennett, I don't wear one"
There may not be such a thing as an ordinary fashion designer, but certainly Cassini was an extraordinary man & designer. Born to former Russian nobility, he was an outstanding athlete and equestrian, he supposedly won a duel in Italy, and served in the USCG in WW2 before switching to the US Army where he served 5 years as a cavalry officer. Definitely one of those "most interesting man in the world" candidates.
Mrs Kennedy turned to the legendary Diana Vreeland, who at that time was Fashion Editor of Harper's Bazaar, for advice on who could make her clothes, other than the French couturiers she loved so much.. For political reasons, she really needed an American designer. But to satisfy her own sophisticated taste, she desired a European sensibility. Mrs Vreeland recommended Oleg Cassini.
I beg your pardon...I dream about walking along the beach at Ary holding hands with Arlene...or having sandwiches and tea in the People's Palace...or just sitting people watching in George Square...the endless days of happiness we could have in real world if only we had met...instead of being limited to my dreams...I love Arlene Francis...so fuck off
Probably because taking into account inflation, college tuition has risen ~150-300% since then, at a rate exponentially higher than wage increases. So college is quite literally unaffordable, even if the student is working- which about half of full-time students do, while also being in school full time. As an example: Harvard tuition in 1961 was $1520, about $14,000 today. Harvard tuition in 2021 is $54,000. Federal minimum wage in 1961 was $1.15, about $10.75 today. Federal minimum wage today is $7.25. In 1961, you could work part time and easily pay your own tuition. Today, you would have to work full time for 4 years to pay for one year of tuition.
Ummm - if medicine says avoid dairy it means avoid lactose-containing products from a cow. At lest that what my doctor, my daughter’s doctor, the doctor of my son’s girlfriend and my dietician say. I agree with Cynthia - an egg is not dairy and the only question that should be answered yes is “is it found in the supermarket near the milk and cheese?”.

That was the one thing wrong with this show, is that they never had time for the very last contestant. You would think they could afford a 2nd chair with two contestants. ha ha
Julie Newmar was and is a different breed of cat. Pun intended. At one point she was supposed to have the perfect female body. With her Catwoman heels on, she was over 6 feet tall. She looked great playing that role in the Batman series.

Oh God no. Newmar is out of this world beautiful and a juggernaut of feminine sexuality . She’s the apotheosis of ALL feminine, virtues including great intelligence and wit, not to mention the original Catwoman.
It seems a college education was less expensive back then. The twin brother and sister had an egg selling business to help pay for it, the two of then. Eggs were less expensive than now. Amazing!
You know. When we were kids. The entertainment taught us something. We learned about people and the kinds of professions they were in. We learned how to ask questions to investigate an unknown. Then we applied our new knowledge, we tried it out in real life. We learned how to interact socially; and we even learned about morals and values. What do the kids learn from the video games today? Hum? What good are they? Do they help a person to be any of the above? Can you imagine what kind of citizens they will be? What kind of parents? How about business owners, or government officials?

Yes, I have seen him in the Twilight Zone episode. Type casting perhaps? Thanks for the input!
Don Mueller Berman was hilarious as Larry David's dad on Curb your Enthusiasm
+Don Mueller Julie Newmar was in an episode (or two?) of Twilight Zone as well.
Way before my time, but always great to see shows that show some insight into the Kennedy era. Also great to see the woman who would be the best Catwoman on the Batman series.... what syndication can do....
The twins were so cute answering together.
And she is still alive😇
"How do you do?" "Yes, sir." "Thank you so much," People were so polite back then.
Ms. Rita Gam, when women carried their dress handbags everywhere, even if they were sitting or even standing around. A lovely handbag was an accessory as much as a necessity for that lipstick and compact, with a couple of tissues. Classy, proper.
"Holy Heights, Batman," J-New is towering in her bare feet.
Towering in sex appeal, beauty and body!
@Synchotron. That's because she's 6' tall without shoes.
Gosh: Julie even 'sits" tall!
"Yes, Sir" to Arlene Francis got me.
Arlene slipping her strap down her shoulder afterwards killed me.
I'm dead.
I used to wonder why she was a celebrity
Pamela Olson She was a stage actress but I think she was more widely known for TV games shows. Her husband was in the business also and occasionally appeared on this show.
And she proudly claims "I'm a girl!" More proof that grown-up women used that word to describe themselves then; it wasn't necessarily a put-down at the time.
If you're "dead" how are you typing a reply?
@@lilybean835, dictation..from the casket..all the ghoul kids are doin it..
"I'm a girl." Arlene Francis hilarious as usual.
I laughed when they had a girdle tester on, and Benett was trying to figure out if the female panelists wore the product....and when they found out what the product was, Arlene said "Bennett, I don't wear one"
Lol, kid was nervous..reminds me of my first time on TV, but I had a script on the teleprompter, lol, and I could release that energy, lol..
Oleg Cassini: Mr. Gene Tierney.
I am in love with Arlene Francis
I beg your pardon...I dream about walking along the beach at Ary holding hands with Arlene...or having sandwiches and tea in the People's Palace...or just sitting people watching in George Square...the endless days of happiness we could have in real world if only we had met...instead of being limited to my dreams...I love Arlene Francis...so fuck off
I had her!
me too
Seeing young people being prosperous in raising their own funds for college was so refreshing. Something you don’t see anymore, sadly.
Bennett definitely wants Marilyn Monroe to be a mystery guest.
I never understood how an egg could be dairy; I thought dairy products have to originate from cows. And eggs come from hens, last time I checked.
The classification comes from the section in the supermarket or grocery store where eggs are often displayed.
Correct but they are so closely associated with milk in cooking and shopping that the lines have become blurred.
Julie Newmar 1961- I'll take one to go. I remember the show in general- entertainment seemed so tame back then. Not a bad thing IMO.
Those twins were farm kids through and through.
Julie Newmar defines the word HOT. There is a video on TH-cam of people doing the Twist, she is in it, and boy is she Sexy, and a great dancer.
Two words: Arlene Francis.
absolutely! genius! :) #quickwit
I adore Arlene, I would gladly read a bio on her
Two words: Rita, Rita
Julie Newmar was born on Aug. 16th ! .... earlier
I was born on Aug. 16th... SAME DAY as Madonna and Angela Basset ! 1958.
Here's what's weird... The King of Rock and Roll..... AND.... the Queen of Soul (Elvis and Aretha)... (diff years)...both died on my birthday. Aug. 16th.
I forgot that years ago people would smoke on live TV shows.
Especially, Julie Newmar, Smokin hot. 😍
@@waynej2608, yes Julie did not need any cigarettes, and she brought her own matches..
Julie Newmasr purrr fectly lovely
Even prettier as a brunette, though. :-)
Rita Gam on the panel was just as gorgeous imho.
@@Tuning_Spork Yes, Julie is such a beauty, no matter the hair color. But, I've always preferred her as a brunette. Now, she's gray and Still a knockout!
@@LarsRyeJeppesen, Rita Gam had nice last name plural..
@R Hugh Sirius Ph.D., Noam Knott Sirius(as you know, you're directly related) a close friend of mine along with the Reverend Hugh Betcha, reminded me that I saw her first in:
MY LIVING DOLL..
with Bob Cummings where she played a sexy tabula rasa robot..circa '64.
My third pair of glasses had frames by Oleg Cassini. My Mom paid $129 for them in 1980.
I still have them, even though they're no good to me. It's not like I'm going to get rid of something so expensive/gold-plated.
I love how Cerf keeps hoping it will be Marilyn Monroe. But the closest she ever came to an appearance was via a Marilyn Monroe calendar salesman.
RITA GAM did well as a guest panelist, she got 2 occupations right. EGG FARMERS & JULIE NEWMAR. She's 8 years older than me and I'm 80.
Useless Fact: Oleg Cassini proposed to Grace Kelly before Prince Rainier. Her father would not give his permission.
I AGREE 100%! Without heels she was 6' tall.
RIP Rita Gam
IMO, Julie Newmar was the best Catwoman!
Arlene is a hoot!

Julie Newmar's hair looks slightly odd ... which is odd for her as she is / was generally so sleekly, elegantly turned out ...
An asymmetrical style that didn't work.
I love her and she cultivated the epitome of sultry, sleek style, but she is an odd woman. The hair actually fits.
@@basilrodericks7791, yes 35, or is it 25 or 37 are all odd..
Viva ODDDDD..!!
@@loissimmons6558 And it could only be achieved with about half a can of hairspray. I'm glad the lacquered look was soon to go out of style. Julie was stunning enough that she didn't need to try bizarre coiffures like this to be noticed.
Style is a funny thing.
JULIE NEWMAR IS MY FAVORITE 🤩 ACTRESS OF ALL TIME
I didn’t realize how tall Mrs newmar is! She is a true Ikon!!
Julie Newmar--the sexiest Catwoman only rivaled by Lee Meriwether
orgonko the wildly untamed She is one of the top 5 in my list of the most beautiful women. What a great figure and so statuesque.
Wasn't she in seven brides for seven brothers?????
@@janeiwasduncan8463 yes and The Band Wagon
Oh God no. Newmar is out of this world beautiful and a juggernaut of feminine sexuality . She’s the apotheosis of ALL feminine, virtues including great intelligence and wit, not to mention the original Catwoman.
With all due respect, and Lee is very fetching, but this is Julie Newmar! C'mon.
It seems a college education was less expensive back then. The twin brother and sister had an egg selling business to help pay for it, the two of then. Eggs were less expensive than now. Amazing!
That's partly because the minimum wage was a lot lower than it is now plus products to make the books 📚 were less expensive.
I feel like I am a kid again watching this.
In star trek, can't remember which episode
"Friday's Child"
"I'm a doctor, not an escalator!" -- Dr. McCoy in "Friday's Child"
Shelley Berman's charm eludes me.
I love Francis' femininity
She wants to show the farm boy, she's a girl with that off-the- shoulder gesture .
@@dancelli714 As if that was necessary, but welcomed, nonetheless.
Is it...... are they hens?
Are they...... a particular kind of hen??
It's not the product that comes from the hen, is it???
Well there's only one thing I can think.... AN EGG????
YOU RAISE EGGS?!?!?!?!
Low cost production - three people had to share either a bench, or two seats.
