Most videos when they do the buffet seem to flash over the food at a rapid rate but that was just right, allowed you to see what was on offer and also what it was, very good.
I mainly cruise on NCL and I always scoffed at the buffet for dinner preferring the MDR or speciality restaurant but I realized I was wrong last summer when I was on the Gem. On some nights, the dinner buffet was actually really good and better than the MDR. My favorite is when they have prime rib or when they have an Asian themed night and have no joke, some of the best chicken and beef skewers that I have ever had. I still don't care that much for NCL's lunch buffets so but if it's a port day, I'll just make due there once I get sick of the fish and chips and sandwiches at The Local/O'sheas.
Thanks for the informative video! They sure do put onion on / in a lot of the food. I don't eat onion, but would probably still be able to find enough things to eat, more on some nights than others. Nice to know what to expect, thanks to this video :)
I've been aboard NCL Sky twice, a sister ship, almost identical to the Sun. Also aboard NCL Pearl, bigger with a slightly larger selection. It's been a couple of years since I've cruised. The ONE THING that NCL cooks well is the Indian food. They had a separate section of the buffet for Indian cuisine and it was simply terrific. The dal and the various chutneys were so flavorful and authentic when you would close your eyes you were transported to New Delhi. I recognize he galley's efforts to produce Italian, Latin, Chinese and other international dishes, with varying degrees of success. Even if you have never tried Indian food, you HAVE TO TRY IT! It will make your palate happy. (Careful--read the label. Some of it is spicy-hot.) Your video is pretty good, without lighting or a great microphone. Did you use the "Photo" mode on your cellphonecamera? It plays with the focus.
Thanks! Agree with you on NCL's Indian food- they usually have some good ones. In the past they even had a Taste of India event which was very enjoyable.
I have just booked Norwegian Star for 2024 Ireland cruise, I am amazed how good this food looks. I have only cruised with P&O and MSC. NCL looks worth every penny (cent)!
👋👋👋👌👍Not that bad varieties of dishes. The period of the cruise is not that long. Good alternative to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean cruise. South East Asian cruise is a decade behind.
Looks like there are a lot of vegetarian options on the buffet menu nightly. I’ve cruised numerous times on Disney, Celebrity, Oceania. We are now looking forward to the NCL Star - Norway. Scotland, Faroe Islands, and Iceland. Disney and Celebrity made us special meals each night in the dining room at our request, as the buffet fell far short of the standards shown in this video. We do get tired of pasta, pasta, and pasta as options every night for vegetarians! Having a real variety of vegetable based dishes, even if it’s just a variety of salads, is a huge plus to the buffet for us. Another plus to the buffet is that you don’t need to spend endless hours at dinner after a long day touring. We’re there for the itinerary, not the food. If the food is fast, flavorful, served at appropriate temperatures, and of sufficient quality and variety, we’re good with it. Having said that, the best food and service overall on our cruises was on Oceania. The O-Life Choice price is quite fair once you factor in the extras on other liners. And, of course, the longer you go the more you save. What you showed us (👍🏻🙏😎) is certainly more variety than we eat at home on a regular basis, and beats having to sit and pay dining out several meals a day in these expensive northern cities.
We did enjoy many of the vegetarian dishes at the buffet- the kitchen staff did a nice job. And yes having the relatively less expensive accommodations and food on cruise ships is one of the big attractions for us in cruising as well. Thanks for sharing your experience from the other cruise lines! 🙂
Did my very first NCL cruise this last October on the Encore. I was both impressed and somewhat disappointed with the complimentary food. First of all, “seafood night” was kind of underwhelming compared with what I had on Royal’s Oasis of the Seas. I was hoping there would be lobster in the equation on my NCL cruise, but alas, not a single lobster tail to be found. Nevertheless, the buffet did not disappoint! There was such a wide variety of other things that I was not bored! Now, the desserts on the Encore - while they looked very inviting, they didn’t seem very flavorful to me. One thing I could not get enough of was their pretzel rolls. That and the cheese selection absolutely made my day. Just a little side note: did a Cabo voyage on the Discovery Princess in November, and the food was absolutely *outstanding* .
Thanks for sharing your experience from the Encore! Yes no lobster on NCL other than in specialty restaurants, and it's been like that actually for many years. The Discovery Princess sounds great- we hope to check it out for sure.
Joanne is absolutely beautiful and always stylish. I appreciate her honest review’s of the food. My husband and I are going on our first cruise in April on NCL. Thank you for your wonderful videos❤❤❤
If you fill out the form ahead of time they will have GF available for you. On embarkation day, tell them at check in and go to MDR to talk to Special Diets Coordinator on the Star or Maitre D on larger ships and they will help you pre order for the next day. Ask a Chef for help if you must eat at the buffet (which NCL does not recommend). Separate kitchen area for allergies, etc, if I understand correctly. 🤞😀all goes well for me in November on the Star.
I should make my list... 2:05 looks like vegan beef... so nah 2:15 yess.. taking the most light pieces... Why so many veggies.. 3:28 whats that? 3:43 that is going to be my whole dinner 4:21 YOINK 4:28 lemme try 5:03 🤔 5:22 interesting 7:25 i take the biggest ones... = more soft 7:32 that lasagna look wierd.. -.- 7:57 GIMME 8:00 HMMMM 8:05 😳😍 8:09 😳😳😳 8:13 👀 8:20 BRUH 9:55 whats that? 10:03 😍 they are prob almost be same as the other squared 11:06 whats that? Great list! Sounds like you like salmon 😋 Nope actually didn't try most of those items since we ate dinner at the main dining room. And thanks for pointing out the ".jpg" - I'll have to prevent that from showing on the caption in the future!
As I am heading out on NCL in a couple of months, I saw a lot of food that would encourage me to make a late night (9 pm) buffet run to try a few dishes. One question. Do you find that the cruise lines that offer all of the specialty dining are starting to cheapen the MDR and the buffet in order to get cruisers to spend more $$$$? Again another great video.
Thank you very much! 😊 Yup that seems to be the case, but most of the time the main dining room dinners are still good to very good. It also doesn't help that specialty restaurant prices have skyrocketed!
@@TravelTouristVideos NCL increased the price of the Churrascaria from $50 to $70.80 since your cruise earlier this year. I compared that pricing to what I could find in SLC, Phoenix and Las Vegas at the five Brazilian steakhouses that I have been to. Using today's price (1-1-23), they ranged from $31-55. To me, it seems really overpriced.
💯! We did eat there 3 for the price of 1 since we're Latitudes Platinum but it's definitely super high right now, but still a good option for those with a dining package.
Because of you and your wonderful videos and hard work I booked a December 2023 Cruise! I plan to eat so much they're going to have to butter my thighs to get me off the ship 😆🤣😂 thank you so much!!!!
Our pleasure- thank you so much for the comment! 😊 Happy to hear our hard work made a difference if helping you choose a cruise! The Star has taken us on many fantastic adventures, and I hope you'll have quite the amazing trip as well!
I went on an NCL cruise several years ago (Baltic cruise, Getaway) and I was trying to think of something memorable from the buffet. I honestly do love buffets, but can't remember anything that stood out. Something I do remember is one lunch being very crowded in the indoor seating area but that wasn't all the time, and you can bring your food anywhere, really, so it didn't affect me, but I saw one group try to bully another group. I had prime rib but didn't get to seafood night (or maybe it didn't happen).
We got off the Norwegian Star in mid July, Reykjavik to New York City by way of Greenland and Eastern Canada. We won't be traveling on Norwegian anytime in the foreseeable future. The food was really poor, everywhere, but the Cafe shown here was beyond vile. Selections were limited, repeated, and simply put, inedible. It is hard to ruin soup, especially something as simple as an Asian noodle soup. I have to hand it to the Norwegian chefs, they were succeeded. You cannot imagine the number of half eaten bowls of soup we saw left on the tables. Just disgusting! (In fairness, their fresh fruit selections were excellent, and they were consistently good). We abandoned the place for lunch after 2 days. Ginza "fusion" Asian restaurant. I'm not certain what was fused, but Panda Express on land was certainly a much higher quality product. Perhaps it was fused with "Chung King" brand canned "Chinese" food of my youth. Pretty dreadful. (The sushi however was decent. Not great, but decent). Main Dining Room, food was okay, nothing spectacular, but service for almost two weeks was consistently amateurish. Untrained to minimally trained staff, uncaring and disinterested. If one of us asked for a cup of coffee, the other was ignored. If I asked for a glass of juice, it could take upwards of half an hour to get it. And my wife would be ignored. But when food did arrive, it was consistently hot. We complained to the Maitre d', who graciously took our complaints, agreed with them, and told us he didn't have the budget for proper staff training. Yeah, that will win friends! Celebrity, all is forgiven, we will be seeing you in December!
Sorry to hear about your experience from the Star! Yeah when we went on the Star (Norway, UK & Iceland cruise), we had low expectations of the complimentary food. The only reason we went was because of the amazing itinerary. Our room steward was great, but yeah the main dining staff didn't seem to care all that much. We look forward to going back to NCL in the future, but most likely only on their newer ships.
Most videos when they do the buffet seem to flash over the food at a rapid rate but that was just right, allowed you to see what was on offer and also what it was, very good.

They had some good offerings! 😋
4 days to go , to witness the professional eaters on this ship😊.
Enjoy the food & have a great cruise! 🙂
Having just gotten off the ship, trust me, you will find what you seek upstairs in the Cafe.
Love your videos! In this video when you were showing the buffet the pic looked a little blurry
Thank you so much! 😊 Yes some of the pics came out blurry, and unfortunately I didn't realize until too late. Gonna try to prevent that next time!

Do they have : GLUTEN FREE ??
We did see some desserts that were gluten-free. They should have gluten-free bread as well if you ask them.

Breads and pastas are cheap and used to fill up the passengers. Notice in terms meat the over use of pork and processed meats. Again cheap.
We like HAL. I’ve never been on NCL, and this didn’t impress me. I prefer fresh made bread and rolls, and a fresh selection of dishes.
Yes HAL's included food quality is certainly a notch above NCL's
