- TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to share why he believes Leon Draisaitl's new eight-year extension with the Oilers is a win for both sides, and what it might mean for Connor McDavid's future in Edmonton.
Draisaitl was always going to be the top cap hit AND it’s an 8 year deal. It should age fine. Don’t forget you had him for a bargain the last 6 years too so he definitely deserves the significant raise.
Did his team win the Cup the past six seasons? No so how was his salary a bargain?
@@Landis_Grant because the oilers wouldn't have gone as far without him something wrong with you ?
@@Landis_Grantsalaries aren’t decided solely based on amount of cups won lol
@@Landis_Grant Do you understand team sports? Do you know how many elite players never win a cup. There is a reason it is the hardest trophy to hoist in sports. 29 at 8.5 Million for the past 7 years has been a LARGE underpay. As far as talent, production, playoff performance, etc. He is at least 30% below his expected salary. So yes, Leon gonna get paid.
@@TheWarawaj If Leon had tried harder, the Oilers would have won the last Stanley Cup. Game 7 was theirs for the taking.
When you have a top 5 player in the world on your team; you try to keep that player.
8 years is the big part of the contract. The cap will likely rise significantly over the next 8 years.
Draisaitl has world class talent and his skill will hold up to the later years of a NHL player.
It's a lot of money, but the dude is an absolute monster every time he's in the playoffs, even when injured.
The guy is a star in the season and playoffs!
Great! Now we just need to sign everybody else at $2😂
On point analyzed! The cap will grow and 70 mio should be really enough for good young prospects and older Routiniers. And Leon is the type of player who will also perform very well in his "best" ages!
Anyone saying it’s too much money, well just look at the amount the Blues just paid for two players that haven’t proven anything.
Blues dont have cap issues, why dont you understand that?
@anthonyfaccaro7118 it's leon draisaitl
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 oilers dont have much of a cap issue anymore... whats your point?
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 oilers have 900k in cap space which will grow to 4 mil when the trade deadlines rolls around.
What dont you understand about that?
@60kMoon how don't they? They have to re sign Mcdavid, Skinner and Bouchard who will all get big raises. The oilers are f'd
Love all the haters that thought he wouldn’t stay are now mad. Cry about it some more.
They arent getting back to the finals, last season was the shot.
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 why do you say that, they are much better this year.
@@michaelkeller5927nobody accused him of being smart
How?
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 I think you been smoking too much of the green stuff. They added more depth and they are going to destroy the pacific division. This team is hella determined.
Can't wait for the season to begin 🎉
Awesome. Awesome. Interview. All positive
IM SO FUCKING PUMPED. LFG OILERS.
I hope Button holds out all year…
Top Heavy this handcuffs the team.
Except it doesnt
No it doesn’t
crazy chain of events, plus, now Krug is out for the season and St. Louis REALLY needs Broberg...
Good for them because the oilers need Drai
They are building a core four like Toronto and will suffer the same consequences.
It’s great he stays and good for him, but who pays really? What will it cost for a guy taking his kids to a game?
I hope Edmonton enjoyed that fluke playoff run last year. Will be the closest they get to a cup anytime soon with these horrible contracts they keep giving out.
You have absolutely no clue about Anything whatsoever! Keep being a Clown 🤡
So much for asking others to take less money so it can fall in those top 4 guys pockets. I suspect some shenanigans in that locker room as soon as they hit a slump.
Yes, it makes sense that the guy who has been on a bargain contract for 6 of the last 8 years and producing at his level is going to have guys in the locker room pissed at him because he’s committed near 20 years of his professional career to the organization playing at the sports highest level. Gimme a break, too many non Oiler fans doing their best to denigrate the team and player at all costs.
Your probably some angry leaf fan who watches Matthews and co continue to take their team to the woodshed with max money but mid term contracts all the while doing jack when it matters most in the postseason.
Chris you and 8 others are smart like dump truck.
Lol not gunna happen. They experienced the worst slump they ever had early last season and ended up recollecting themselves and went on a record breaking streak and pulled themselves into the playoffs. Then they slumped again in the Stanley Cup finals going 3-0. That didn't shake them at all. Yeah they lost but you're lying to yourself if you think they gave up on each other.
@@defstone999They are the oldest team in the league who got way slower. They will be a dumpster fire by christmas....all this does is make everyone ask for more money, same cap hell but just bigger numbers. Bowman is an asshat.
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 Has your dog replaced your brain with its 💩 by any chance?
The only ones who can’t wrap their brain around this contract is Leaf fans🤷♂️
$14 million per yr makes more then Matthews Leon highest paid player in the nhl currently.
This is it, I can feel it
Top 5 player in the league?
IMO, definitely top 3
He only does as well as he does because of good ol' McCupless.
@@g.w.7893 🤣
Never ask Button for his opinion.
He once said the 2021 playoff Habs wouldn’t even win 1 game against the Leafs.
We all know what happened next… 🙃🙃
Ok Tristan. 😂
How is this not an over payment?
if he was a free agent, teams would be offering him around 15-16M
It starts after this season and if we are assuming modest 5% cap increase every year, the real impact will be ~$13.3M in the first year, $10.8 on the fifth and $8.8M the last. So if Leon keeps playing as he is then the contract should age fine.. obviously we don't know what the inflation and NHL real business growth will be but most of the people are expecting more than 5% compound nominal rate...
@johnj8069 I pray for the Oilers' sake he can maintain his production and influence on their success in the playoffs. I don't know what happened in the series against Florida, but if one of Matthews or Nylander didn't produce a goal, the city and media would errupt, especially in a stanley cup final, not to mention giving that player .5 more million aav than the best regular season goal scorer potentially ever when it's all said and done.
@60kMoon That's Leons leverage to get the 8 years. If they win the cup in the next 2 years, then the contract has value. If they don't and the team tapers off of competitiveness at any point during the first 5 years of this contract, it'll be sad to see from Ontario.
The overpayment comes to the bunch of players who are half of Leon, making 9mil, plus!🤷♂️
Mcdavid is worth way more money as he was the one doing the work in the Stanley cup finals while draistsailte didn’t do much but I get it
Did he sign for gold or fake dollars? That is not a win win.
28 yrs old being called a kid 😂
Draisaitl deserves every cent... dude broke his back carrying edmonton while McDavid got all the credit
This contract will age like bread, just like Leon.
The problem I have with Draisaitl is that he doesn't always hustle. He's not a Sid. He's not putting in the time in the offseason to be in peak shape, so he won't last as long at such a high level.
Really? You spend time with him in the off season to know that? 'He doesn't always hustle' yet is the second best playoff producer in the last several years even while playing injured the last two years.
His game isn’t dependant on speed. Leon is a slow, cerebral kind of player
@@dckmusic yeah, he's my brother.
32% of salary cap will be for McDavid and Draisatl. That's insane. They putting all their eggs in one basket. But Button is the king of bad takes...
Worth every penny by comparison to other contracts but overpaid from a team perspective
Its really too bad they couldnt win a cup in the last 3 seasons, but man they had to dig out from the dumpster fire Chia left them in.
Where's Chia now? Oh look, hes in St Louis! 😂😂😂😂
His contract might not look good in the last 3-4 years
😂
it wont look good in 3-4 years you mean
😂😂 clown
Hard to see 35yo Leon playing worth 14 mil ...
Omg button go away and swap him with strudwick
Win for 1 side .......
Thompson Thomas Allen Nancy Wilson Sarah
He’s not a kid lol the guys 27 yrs old he’s a man.
it is a terrible contract for the Oilers. He's going to be 30 when it kicks in. Their team was already in cap hell and terribly unbalanced. they don't draft or develop well enough to afford to put half their roster in 4-5 guys
Any team would be crazy not to sighn Leon or Conner for whatever they want. All time greats you may never see in the franchise again.. what team do you root for?
You do realize the cap will go up more than usual each season from now. Or are you just that delusional? Everyone said the same garbage when Draisaitl signed that $8.5M. And then what did he do? He shut you haters up for 8 years... and he will do it again for another 8 years. Stick to Soccer
Laughs or fLAMES fan I take it?
most autistic take yet
@@Kurdem03I guess you didn't know in football that you call soccer best players make 10 times what Leon got 😅
Draisatal is crap 14 mill to stand there and take passes to the same spot and one time it in otherwise hes so lazy
Lol. Looks good for the 1at 3 or 4 years then its an incredible boat anchor. Once a guy hits 35ish its mostly down hill and certainly not worth 14 m/yr.
7 mill for the regular season and 7 for the playoffs.
He is able to elevate his game in the playoffs which isn't something every player can say. Or can they do it as much as Draisaitl is able to.
14 mill for a star playoff performer for 8 years locked is ok.
Most of the greatest players easily produce past age 35. Look at Crosby and Ovi, Gretzky, Mario Lemieux. Draisaitl might not quite be in that 'god tier', but he's close, and will likely produce a point per game easily. History and evidence have shown this. It usually works out fine for the best of the best, and the teams they're associated with.
terrible contract. Only McDavid is worth that much money. Leon is a good player, but it proves that he's not a game changer. He has not been delivering during playoffs when games are at hand.
He had broken rib after Canuck series not sure if you ever tried shooting a puck with a broken rib
The dude has played through brutal injuries in the playoffs the last 3 years, including playing with only leg against Colorado, and still dominated the score sheet. Also, He still lead the league in goals in playoffs 2 years ago, despite being eliminated by Vegas in round 2 of the playoffs. I don't know wtf more do you expect from the guy. 98% of the players can't come close to what Drai brings in the playoffs when battling major injuries. The guy is a beast. You're just ignorant as fuk

@@Kurdem03 I agree, he's played through brutal injuries and been great despite them... but he's also been injured every season. This contract will not age even a little bit well, and I mean like in 2 years
@@GoodMenstruationAttitude Every season? The dude RARELY gets injured in the regular season. Injuries in the playoffs are normal. You talk like superstars that have won/lost the Stanley cup neven gotten injured. Its the playoffs for a reason
the guy clearly doesn't care about winning the cup with a contract like that.
Do you have at least one brain cell in your head?
tell me more how you dont under how agents use other contracts to get their own
no one takes less like you would ever want. it would affect to many other players . name one player would took more than a 1 million dollar than they should have which is nothing EVER
In 2 years the Oilers roster will be substantially worse
You are incorrect.
how much money does one need ... really ? Anyhow congrats . The Stanley Cup coming to Edmonton wears even more thin now . Its about getting all the depth players that take you to hoisting the Stanley Cup that they will not be able to afford . Edmonton now is in the same category as the maple laughs and there run with the Matthews era . Montreal on the other hand is doing things the right way and having everyone share the piece of the pie . That team is stacked and deep and are going to attract RFA's . And the thing is Montreal will be able to sign them cause they dont have over half of the salary cap locked up in 4 or less players they are the team to watch turn things around . Toronto, Edmonton and even Calgary with the 2 horrible contracts there are all fooked up . Mind you Edmonton has a decent chance to win this year but after that . they will have too many holes to fix and will only be a sub par wanna be contending team .
Mcdavie and drizzy will win the stanely cup but not in a Edmonton Jersey .

Montreal sucks and will continue to suck because they have no players worth talking about. I'd be jealous if I were you too. Edmonton is far and away Canada's best team by a country try mile and will continue to be for the next decade.
It’s only ever about one thing. Money
This gives way for McDavid to leave and the Oilers will be “ok”
Some EDM cope in here.
