Draisaitl was always going to be the top cap hit AND it’s an 8 year deal. It should age fine. Don’t forget you had him for a bargain the last 6 years too so he definitely deserves the significant raise.

When you have a top 5 player in the world on your team; you try to keep that player.
8 years is the big part of the contract. The cap will likely rise significantly over the next 8 years.
Draisaitl has world class talent and his skill will hold up to the later years of a NHL player.

It starts after this season and if we are assuming modest 5% cap increase every year, the real impact will be ~$13.3M in the first year, $10.8 on the fifth and $8.8M the last. So if Leon keeps playing as he is then the contract should age fine.. obviously we don't know what the inflation and NHL real business growth will be but most of the people are expecting more than 5% compound nominal rate...

@johnj8069 I pray for the Oilers' sake he can maintain his production and influence on their success in the playoffs. I don't know what happened in the series against Florida, but if one of Matthews or Nylander didn't produce a goal, the city and media would errupt, especially in a stanley cup final, not to mention giving that player .5 more million aav than the best regular season goal scorer potentially ever when it's all said and done.

Its about getting all the depth players that take you to hoisting the Stanley Cup that they will not be able to afford . Edmonton now is in the same category as the maple laughs and there run with the Matthews era . Montreal on the other hand is doing things the right way and having everyone share the piece of the pie . That team is stacked and deep and are going to attract RFA's . And the thing is Montreal will be able to sign them cause they dont have over half of the salary cap locked up in 4 or less players they are the team to watch turn things around . Toronto, Edmonton and even Calgary with the 2 horrible contracts there are all fooked up . Mind you Edmonton has a decent chance to win this year but after that . they will have too many holes to fix and will only be a sub par wanna be contending team .
