@@patrickkatzmair nah it has been well used, tape measures dont last very long with heavy use. Working in the bridge construction industry all my tapes look that way within a few days lol. Although this one he has here has definitely seen its better days for me they're trash soon as they start having issues retracting.
For aluminium handlebar you should use pipecutter instead of hacksaw. Pipecutter is precise, cheap and leaves cleaner cut on the outer surface of the bar for easier grip assembly. Don´t use it for cutting carbon handlebar!
+treyblakeandrew Yeah, like Beth Caroll and floppy said, pipe cutter will leave nice finish as long as you don´t overclamp it. Tighten cutter moderately where you would like to cut, spin cutter couple of times around the handelbar and tighten litle more and spin again. It´ll work brilliantly when you let the cutters' blade do the work, no force needed.
Enjoyed the comment about not trusting the bar markings for accurate measurements only to measure up with a puckered tape measure! Haha. The sentiment was there though
Marc's got his priorities in the right order. Lovely carbon bar, proper hacksaw blade, doesn't care how grimy the tape measure is (although it could be replaced for a few quid found in the GCN couch).
I was running 720mm on my trail bike and knew I wanted wider, but didn't know how wide to go. So I bought some 800mm bars in the sale online with a view to chopping them down a bit at a time to find my perfect width. That was a year ago and they are still 800mm! I love em'!
Any chance of a how to on night riding? Showing how to set up the various types of lights e.g single handle bar mounted, twin torches handle bar mounted or the helmet mounted lights. Also your opinion on the helmet mounted / handle bar mounted lights which is better would be great. If you could shoot a video showing the use of the lights on trails at night too, it might help me choose which type to invest in!
I use a pipe cutter for a perfectly square cut. the kind that have a little scoring wheel that you tighten progressively as you turn it around the bar. it's cleaner and doesn't leave burrs.
Thank you for making these videos and making this channel so entertaining and informative. I have learned a lot from GMBN and I hope to learn a whole lot more. This season alone, the instructional videos have likely saved me from a handful of crashes... still need to work on drifting the rear under control though.
Should I attempt to cut my crank bros aluminum bars with a hack saw if I don't have a cutting guide? Bringing it down from 780 to 760? Tough to cut straight?
Might wanna try taking the bars off of the bike and clamping them in a vice safely? Makes cutting far more efficient and you are less likely to damage the bar, tools or yourself.
Nutty , tubing cutter for all except carbon which is easily done with a hacksaw by eye. Been riding cycles motor and not for 40 years. Running 640 mm on my bike and seem absurdly wide, still run bar ends if your serious about climbing and strain relief. I don't even run 760s on a hundred horse motorcycle.
May I ask a question? when sliding the saw, do I have to put the blade as closely to the guide as possible so as to make a straight cut? If I do, I am afraid the blade would make friction with the guide, resulting in some damage to the blade.
Strange 1" Rise 780mm, they are the description stats of my handle bars but it doesn’t say what width handle bars I need cause I want to re new them and also I want to get raised handlebars cause they are to low for my back and I just don’t know what to get? Any suggestion would be appreciated 🙏
In some tight trails it's good to know where your handlebars end, and your hands are the perfect way to know this. And if you're moving the grips inwards, why not just cut them anyway?
I wonder what he does with that third hand you know what I'm saying hehe I mean repairing bikes what were you thinking yes I know what you was thinking
The Dirt Shed Show said that monday Would be converting to 1 by setup? But why am I looking at handlebar cutting. Also a few weeks ago the Dirt Shed Show said something about how to whip on the up coming week, but the video never showed up? Something is wrong with the communication on the Channel ;-)
a little shaving cream on the cutting surface will work wonders. the foam will keep the carbon particulate down so it's not breathed in.
where can I get me one of those third hands? they look really handy.
.... Sorry, I'll get my coat.
Lol
I've cut mine three times and they're still too short.
😂😂
I’ll bet one more time will do the trick! 👍🏽
Fourth time is the charm!
Dry
Are you accepting donations towards a new tape measure?
+Rick Fee haha, i think this is a special tape measure for measuring around bends.
Haha, WTF, de he roll over it with a truck? 😂

That's what I would use. Pipe cutter, like you say leaves a nice finish. That's what's I use to cut my steerer tube down to size.
+vaikeaaon All hail the pipe cutter. I used to plumb and I'd've never thought of that. Will keep in mind since I could never afford carbon!
+Beth Carroll I always heard not to use a pipe cutter because it can crimp the metal
Only if you overclamp it. There's a bit of art in using a pipe cutter properly.

you guys are the only people I know to take the grips off before cutting the bar. Amazing

I love wide bars

+toobigal That's great for Aluminium, but not for carbon. It will splinter.

Third hand does come in handy for signaling and waving. Glad I am not alone!
my tips; apply superglue on the cut end of carbon handlebar or carbon steering column.
you can also sparay some water on the bars during the cut because of the carbon fragments
"So using my third hand here" LOL.
@ 1:16
I heard calling it a "carbon specific hacksaw blade" is a fancy way to ask 40 $ for a 7$ 32TPI blade...
Should I attempt to cut my crank bros aluminum bars with a hack saw if I don't have a cutting guide? Bringing it down from 780 to 760? Tough to cut straight?
I love his "well used" measuring tape.
Might wanna try taking the bars off of the bike and clamping them in a vice safely? Makes cutting far more efficient and you are less likely to damage the bar, tools or yourself.
2:30 You guys could become briefcase smugglers, that was a better switch than the movies!
I so have the fork stem cutter but prefer to use a Toledo pipe cutter on carbon and aluminium fork and handlebar.

#throwback to 2010 when handlebars on "all mountain" bikes were like 650mm lol...
running 780mm bars on it now though lol
I like the shirt w/ just the logo!
great video, what is the rise of the handlebar in the video?
May I ask a question? when sliding the saw, do I have to put the blade as closely to the guide as possible so as to make a straight cut? If I do, I am afraid the blade would make friction with the guide, resulting in some damage to the blade.
I love the ramdom humor you put in the videos xD

what about the 1x vid?
Hey Si, what do you think of those Guides?
what brand of cutting guide tool is that ? and what grade of file also as I've the same bars thank you
You could also use a pipe cutter right?
only on metal. carbon would splinter
Thank you for your help!
Marc. You need to replace your measure tape. It looks quite tired.
How to video on replacing your measuring tape? Hah
+78garo Yeah you are right it was a bit on the tired side, seemed to do the job though.Cheers Marc
Next week on GMBN, how to cut off your third arm that you can't control correctly!!
I have a ti handlebar. Is there any trick to cutting them down?
Carbon specific blade? Damn you Marc Beaumont!!! You spend more of my money than the Mrs and kids.
I'm 6'2 with broad body building shoulders. What would you guess to be a good bar size? Currently have 750mm so maybe 780? 750 feels slightly crammed
what's your riding style?
where can you get one of those carbide blades?
That's a fine tape measure u have there
Top job!
That video I was looking for 🙏🤙🤙🤙🤙
Where can i order that third arm option?
What size was the stem on this bike??
where will i get my third hand
I find tape and a axe is best for the cleanest chop
Jeezz. Can you get sponsors to buy you new tape measure?
Alu bars could be cut with a plumbers pipe cutter. RECOMMENDED.....!
It's better to use a torque wrench, especially on carbon bars.
Didn't know there was such a thing as a lucky tape measure - is that Si's?
what will happen if I use a normal hacksaw for a carbon bar because I don't have a carbon blade
Isn't it a better idea to take the bars off first..?
What happened to "how to convert to 1x10?"
just set up a hover when cutting
Why cutting when you can just move the grips inward?
In some tight trails it's good to know where your handlebars end, and your hands are the perfect way to know this. And if you're moving the grips inwards, why not just cut them anyway?
how do you add length for shorter bars?
We wouldn't advise on trying to make bars longer!
duct tape.
I have successfully cut multiple carbon bars without a "carbon specific blade".
My bars are 780mm and I feel that they are just a little bit too long
A tubing cutter also cuts very clean and easy.
where can i get a gmbn Jersey?
You can't, already asked! 😔
+Jason Cross Hopefully soon guys!
What, no torque wrench?
Why would you wanna make your bars narrower, mine are 680 and I wish I had wider ones
I karate chopped mine.. perfect👊
I bet the hardware store has a new tape measure... ;)
I wonder what he does with that third hand you know what I'm saying hehe
I mean repairing bikes what were you thinking yes I know what you was thinking
I'd love to have three arms!
I don't think that measuring tape is reliable.. Time for an upgrade!
2:54. haha xD
Not a very precise mark with a blunt marker. A wicked sharp pencil works best.
there is no need for me to cut my handle bar ...... cause i am planing to buy a longer bar XD ......anyway thank marc
Why not just getting a new smaller bike?
The Dirt Shed Show said that monday Would be converting to 1 by setup? But why am I looking at handlebar cutting. Also a few weeks ago the Dirt Shed Show said something about how to whip on the up coming week, but the video never showed up? Something is wrong with the communication on the Channel ;-)
yeah that's true ! I was wating for the 1 by video because i'm looking towards ditching my front derailler on my new mtb !
+jls0439 I hope you're not American
+Ruben Williams i'm french
skrillex1234ful Oh good, No lawsuit filed against GMBN
+Ruben Williams no im actually Danish ;-) as you Can see.... It's way to far from american :-P
I thought Monday's video was supposed to be how to convert to 1x.
Okay I don't have any of that. Grinder it is 😀
"Measure twice, cut once"
personaly I use 1m bars
You really need to invest in a new tape measure.
Don't measure, cut three times
can i cut chromoly like this?
Third hand, huh. What about a third leg?
Under 301 Club! Must be a day off work or something...
I love you honey bunny, good vid.
I'll just whip out my trusty handlebar cutting guide tool. Not very practical.... 🙄
You have 2 hands, I have 3 legs.
Lol
Perhaps use a mask? Should use a mask and glasses and or vary least spray water on the blade/ bar.
what ? it's not the tutorial to switch to a one by drivetrain ? wtf m8
in the dirt shed show you said that on monday it would be change to a one by drivetrain
+skrillex1234ful Chill bro, its coming soon!
