This compilation collects the complete February 6, 1972 concert by the Bill Evans Trio that was first aired by A la Masion de la Radio in Paris and subsequently issued on two individual CDs by France's Concert. The pianist, joined by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, is in top form throughout the performance, even if the first half of the concert is a bit laid-back for Evans. But drawing from a walk of material, including numerous originals, there's also the haunting "Turn Out the Stars" and the bittersweet "The Two Lonely People," on which the trio gathers steam in the second half, with a wild romp through Evans' demanding "Twelve Tone Tune" and a delightfully breezy treatment of "Very Early" (showcasing Gomez), along with a moving rendition of Denny Zeitlin's gorgeous requiem "Quiet Now" among the highlights. The final track is from a Yugoslavian jazz festival recorded a few months later and previously issued on the Enja compilation Live at the Festival with British drummer Tony Oxley in Morell's place. Evidently due to lack of rehearsal and familiarity working with Evans, Oxley never really blends in very well with the pianist and Gomez in the extended workout of "Nardis." But due to the excellent performances by Evans and Gomez, this is a rewarding disc that returns once rare music to print.

Having grown up in Southern California in the 1960’s and early 1970’s I was very fortunate to have seen Bill Evans live at Shelley’s Manne Hole on several occasions with this trio. I thought I had all of his albums but don’t have this one. His Paris concert in 1972 is truly magical!!!

I've wondered about them both - brilliant pianists, one in Toronto, the other In New York, Glenn playing the Goldberg variations and other Bach to perfection, and Bill practising Bach for a year when he felt he needed to learn more from Bach about how to play jazz- a kind of beautiful kinship/twinship of musical souls.

The interplay between the members of this trio expresses the Classical aesthetic of beauty and economy. This quality of playing is very rare in contemporary Jazz and demonstrates the durability and expressiveness of this approach. Evans " playing the silences " as attentively as the notes themselves puts him into a class of one.

I agree, and I suppose everyone has their favorite Bill Evans trio personnel. I think for Bill, it was the one with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian (spelling?), but this one rates, certainly. Bill did vary the lineups of his recordings, but the trio format was the one he always came back to. I love them all, and have a particular fondness for the "Loose Blues" quintet with Zoot Sims, and Jim Hall. I think love was at the heart of Bill Evans' music.

I dont know why I like jazz. The fabulous baker boys, leaving las vegas, and low down are some of my favorate jazz movies. The chaos, loneliness, the deep emptiness I feel low down in my heart somehow resonate with the music. I feel understood and yet my miserable solitude is confirmed. A glass of gin and tonic or wine will prolong that grief. I love that.

I've been listening to this jam for three weeks straight at work. Beats Sirius XM or Spotify any day.

Awesome that you're able to post this: it's out of print, and harder to find than a tropical day in Alaska.

Isn't it a pity few people get to hear this music. It takes time to learn how to really listen. X Tar for uploading this intellectual music.

It sounds like cliched overstatement, and yet it's so experientially deep and true.

yeah I guess that happens as he got older and knew a little too much so he just plays cliches but in a super intricate and deep way. hes a master at that anyway.

A year has passed and a new meaning this concert has for me. A beautiful tune written by Scott La Faro is a real tribute for him. Around 10 years since his death when this concert was performed. Eddy Gomez makes us forgot one of the best bassist of all times!
