Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war... Our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won't. We're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.” - Tyler Durden (Fight Club)

    I taught my kids to make good financial decisions. I taught them that new wears off and becomes old well before the payments end. My middle son decided to really listen to me and implement my advice concerning his finances. He was 23 years old, didn't go to college, was working in a factory, and ended up saving up enough money to pay cash for a house that needed work but was livable on two lots on the edge of town. Even though he has to put money into the place, he is saving about $7,000 per year in rent and is able to invest that money into his home and build equity in it rather than throw it to the wind.

      whatever, rich do whatever they want, their rich!! this idea people get rich by not spending is for the stupid. every rich person I've known has blown crazy money on cars, trips, planes, etc... it's all about your role/title in the debt game. are you ceo, department head or merely labor. I've known a few ceo's all of which bought their luxury cars & suvs new, all over $100k with no delay or later regret. labor never gets rich off what they derive via their labor. look at trump, he was a operator of separate legal entities other than himself and he used them to garner debt that was used to garner profit then filed bankruptcies when profit motive diminished.

    There's a lot more things that you can do to be frugal and save your money. Some are:
    1. Cook your own meals
    2. Get rid of cable television
    3. Invest in your future aspirations both
    monetarily and in intelligence
    4. Live with others if you must and not
    alone. Take in a border.
    5. Don't party hardy.
    6. Use public services. They were
    made for your use so take
    advantage of them (I. e. library,
    community college, public
    transportation, etc.)
    7. And the list goes on and on...
    I'm 50 with a disability and I get by saving money and so can you.

    All my buddies at work have been getting new/ basically new cars ever since we started getting our company wide raise last year. I'm still driving my older 99 s10. It cost me 1,500 years back it is currently worth about 3,000 and cost next to nothing for full coverage insurance and when major components do need to be rebuilt it is dirt cheap. They joke about me driving my older truck, well this past 2017 year that truck and its low maintenance/insurance cost allowed me to save up 20,000. The guys I work with still don't understand how I saved that much in one year off the salary we make. You just can't explain it to some people.

Others had all new Honda's & Fords. 8 months later 50% of staff were let go, I owned my 8 year old car so never worried about an older car as it was all mine. 3 months later 25% of more staff were let go - me included. I never buy new cars. I buy them about 2 years old. The reasons for this is that when you compare a new car to a 2 year car after about 6 months they basically look and act the same. The minute you drive off the lot with a new car you take a depreciation hit. I avoid that. Bought a 2008 Buick for 13k and I do all the maintenance on it myself. I spent less than 2k to fix everything wrong with it. So in all about 15k bought. Original selling price of the car when new was 40k.
    I would also like to add to the list of things not to do.
    1. Dont rent houses. What happens is that renters either do not pay their rent and / or they trash the house. Then it takes atleast six month to evict them and then after that you get to spend big bucks fixing all the damage to the house only to turn around and repeat the process.
    2. Buy your cell phone outright if you can afford it. Also, Do not buy the latest greatest one out there. Your not going to notice a difference in cell phones really between a brand new one or one that is one or two years old. With a fully owned cell phone your average cost for cell phone service is 50 bucks a month. The rest of the money you pay goes toward the cost of the cell phone if you buy it on contract or make monthly payments. A 200 - 300 cell phone can easily cost you more than 1000!
    3. Never buy a home that will be more than 25% of your monthly income. Thats kind of the golden rule. Take it as an average. Also, Your mortgage should be a 15 year instead of the 30 year. You pay off quicker and save a lot of money.
    thanx

      What if you don't have 600k to throw on a house, you gotta rent. I'd live off of a very cheap shitty one for 5k, as i'd save alot. Imagine about 900€ every month saved. But I don't think any houses are 5k. Cheapest ones maybe 35k

    Wish I had seen this video earlier this year. Bought a brand new car on the last day of toyota-thon Jan 2 thinking that I had a great deal due to 0.9% APR. I am 8 months into the payment and boy do I regret it. While listening to Dave Ramsey this morning, he mentioned that if from age 30 to 70 you were to shift your avg $500 monthly car payment towards retirement investments instead, you'd have approx $6 million dollars. Holy spork! Probably not going to sell my car because I am already 8 months in the plan and have decided to aggressively pay it off within the next 14 months, but definitely not going to make that mistake again.

You can STILL get a 2-3 year old car, let the first guy pay the depreciation and pay it off fast, and drop the insurance to liability. Put in synth oil and change every 6 months, keep it til it has 150,000 and get rid of it.

    As per your "expensive" car idea......all cars are expensive anymore, so your BEST bet is to buy a ONE OWNER car off a private party. Many times these people (because of the cost of the car) have taken maticulous care of it and have all the records of everything they've done to it. They are usually lower mile cars too.. The problem with brand new cars is the moment you drive that new car off the dealer's lot it is now a USED CAR and has fallen THOUSANDS of dollars on the car market.....FACT.
    I used to work for a dealership and this is exactly what happens.

    • @timnoir
      @timnoir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @bobjacobson858 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timnoir That's an interesting point, and it makes sense. One caveat--how well are rental cars maintained? Some years ago when I returned a rental car I mentioned that I checked the oil and coolant levels each day before starting out, and the person at the agency laughed and said "you take a lot better care of the car than we do" I typically do this with a rental car, but was especially assiduous because this was in Alaska and I was driving mostly in rural areas.

      @mydogskips2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ken EagleBear Haha, yes, but more to the point, there is a fundamental difference between ONE dollar and one HUNDRED THOUSAND, or one MILLION. People spend a dollar on a thirty cent candy bar because they want it, can afford it, and often consider the 70 cents trivial, at least relative to their desire for a candy bar in the given moment. Also, most don't think they'll ever save and accumulate one MILLION single dollar bills, not to mention that the long-term goal is greatly outweighed by the desire for immediate gratification. And in regards to the car, most people don't consider 70 thousand dollars negligible when making a purchase, even most rich people I would imagine.

    Good advice. We are encouraged to live just within, or beyond our means. Credit cards are disgusting. Also, people are getting less and less in reality with how much money they actually have (or have not) because cash (dollar bills and coins) is being used less and less in favour of card payments. When I was young (a long time ago) you got a pay packet with cash in it - and that had to last you the week. There was no such thing as credit and I think that was a good thing. I was never tempted to spend more than I had in my pocket because you could not do it ! We are now urged to take credit in the forms of loans and overdrafts - to buy things now with money we have not yet earned. No wonder the debt levels people have are ridiculously high.

    Here is the way I see it:
    - If you want the car, have the money for it and can get a DEAL on it and want it for YOU and not to show off, then do it.
    - If you like this clothing item, can get it for a DEAL and want it for YOU and not to show off then do it.
    - Before you do ANY of the above things mentioned, CAN YOU AFFORD TO MAINTAIN THE ITEM?
    Simple, if it makes you happy and you can afford it then buy it. What good is saving all your money if you aren't happy.
    It's all about getting a good deal on the items you want and saving the extra money for rainy days. If you buy, you must save and when you do buy, do it wisely.

    Here's one more... even though it's printed on paper with ever declining value, don't burn it to generate heat when you're cold. It's still worth slightly more than kindling, and the fed uses inks that give off harmful fumes when combusted.

    Absolutely right Ryan. Good video. The third one is a very common mistake. I have two further views on this: 1. Always buy a second-hand car which is at the bottom end of its depreciation curve, and 2. never spend more than 3% of your overall wealth buying it. These two factors together determine what price range of car you can afford to buy. So if you have 100k in the bank, or in house, shares, and cash, you can afford a second-hand car of no more than 3k.

    How funny that you mention buying bottle service in Vegas since I work in Vegas nightlife and help people who want to buy bottle service booths at cubs...btw, the cheapest bottle booths at the majors nightclubs cost more like a minimum of $1,000. After taxes, fees and gratuity it ends up costing more like $1,500 when all is said and done just for an entry level table.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ryan Scribner Plenty of people. These clubs make so much money from alcohol that it's crazy. There are some people in this world with serious amounts of money to spend. People who pay for bottle service are essentially paying for the real estate that they occupy in the club. On big nights the minimum might be $2,000 for a regular table because the demand is so high. There are people who spend $20,000 or more to be next to the DJ booth at the nightclubs in Vegas

      I dont own a single vehicle with an OBD2 port. I got a 66 mustang with a 289, a 92 s10 with a 2.8, and a 94 dakota with a 318. So I have a rec car, a hauling truck, and a daily driver. All paid off, all working and running, and all more dependable than the average ten year old car you will find on the road. All you need is to learn how to fix stuff and maintenance your own vehicles. That simple.

    Not sure about the car analogy, an old car is far more likely to break down and have large repair costs, as well as poor fuel economy and higher road tax costs. My old Audi cost me £3500 in repairs AFTER I had paid off the finance, as well as costing me thousands in my job because it stopped me from seeing clients to sell my product to. I bought a 65 plate golf gtd in December last year which costs me £250 perm month, but hasn't let me down once or cost me a penny to repair.
    Most of your advice is spot on though
