Hi, Lori! Hope all's still well with you in the States. I've been watching a lot of TH-cam stand-up lately, and have been genuinely surprised at the genuine surprise a lot of the Brit comics and TV programmes generate. Many people in the Comments are clearly American - the UK comedians are often new to them - and I can almost hear the sound of jaws dropping from here! (I'm based in the north of England.) The acts are all well-known to us, so the humour seems quite ordinary. Hilarious, but ordinary. I think it's perhaps best described as 'robust'. Or 'earthy'. The performers are certainly outstanding talents, but their material's nothing shocking or strange. It's just a good laugh. The US has a great tradition of comedy too, but (with respect) the stuff that gets broadcast always strikes me as a bit... er, restrained? Jerry Seinfeld, for instance, is 'nice'. Highly skilled, hugely experienced, but... clean. Smart. Polite. Safe. Maybe the hardcore late-night Comedy Club regulars aren't scared to cause offence, but to my eyes the US comedy performances that make it to TV [sic] are often a bit too sanitised to be laugh-out-loud funny. Is it a legacy of the old puritan/religious thing? We don't really do that over here. Over here, anything goes. It's a grubby little island swarming with grubby little Brits. The USA, on the other hand, is huge and angry and heavily armed. Wall-to-wall religious rectitude, political correctness, Catholic morality, church on Sunday, compulsory diversity, no swearing, blasphemy is a sin, mustn't say anything controversial because the Pope or God or Elvis or Jesus might be watching or someone might sue (or shoot) you, blah, blah, blah... I think British chat-shows are a bit different, too. In the States the (temperamental, demanding) superstar A-List celebrities are treated with kid gloves and deference; they don't swear, they sit bolt-upright and run through a prepared set of questions; it's kinda stilted. The host is thrilled just to be in the same studio as Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise. The audience hangs on their every word with hushed reverence. Security stands by to eject hecklers. On something trashy like Jonathan Ross or Graham Norton the same stars are mocked and teased and encouraged to relax, and told that there are NO rules and that NOTHING is taboo. Say anything, do anything, insult anyone, burn some flags, whatever. It's Britain: nobody cares. As a result they let their hair down and before you know it the air's blue with knob gags [sorry, I mean 'reminiscences of adult sexual impropriety']. Sarah's great. I feel a bit guilty that I (we) take her ready wit and flawless performances for granted. :-)
This afternoon I decided to get back into clay sculpting. I have not worked with clay in years. For my sculpture I decided to make a model of the golden ratio, using rolled up clay for forming it into a rectangular spiral. While surfing through some stand up comedy I came across Sarah Millican, which next lead me to her show. First time I have ever seen or heard of her show and it happened to have a segment about the golden ratio ! I will take this as a sign that I should stick with my golden ratio project. .... and with Sarah Millican.
Love you Sarah - this Yank found you on QI and hv now enjoy all of your shows. You are are doll. I REALLY LIKE DR. MICHEAL MOSLEY - he really is interesting, affable and funny. I will be back Sarah, but have to start checking out Dr.Mosley on TH-cam. YOU BOTH ARE WONDERFUL AND I WISH AMERICAN AUDIENCES KNEW YOU BOTH!
Surprise Surprise was Saturday night TV. I remember because I watched it every week when I stayed with me gran lol. On another note I LOVED covering my hand in PVA Glue on my hands and peeling it off!!!! Xxx
If someone makes a higher offer for a house, when your offer has already been accepted by the seller, you might be 'gazumped' if the seller doesn't stick to their word and sells it to the higher bidder. It's legal, because no contracts have been signed, but it's 'not the done thing'.
I LOVE SARAH! Side note, the Dr. is kinda douchey. Ugh with the ratio stuff...it's science is based entirely on caucasian features. Last time I checked Asians with wider faces, Africans with wider noses, and so on IS PERFECTLY BALANCED and GORGEOUS.
Not to mention beauty is subjective.. personally I think Sarah is more beautiful than Angelina because I have a warmer feeling and sense of connection to Sarah :)
millican is still best alone on stage doing her hilarious material. on this show she rushes everything and really abuses her guests. I can't imagine why anyone would agree to be on.
The jokes are as funny as her live shows, but her delivery on TV is far too stiff during monologues. I guess she needs to stand on cue for the cameras, but it'd be more relaxed to use her arms or move about. It seems like she is reading off cue cards the whole time. Still, she's a refreshing delight - saucy but never seeming crude or tasteless (and I can't do any better). She's champion!

This is definitely a laugh track. When the shot goes to the audience no one is laughing. I personally think she's very funny but the laugh track is annoying, so will not watch.
I love to hear her giggle when people are applauding......too funny!
