Saw Zappa 1973 concert @ Kent State when he had a full leg cast on and was hopping around all over the stage. Incredibly, he opened for Mahavishnu Orchestra! When the concert was over we could hardly move. I knew Zappa could play the guitar but I never really knew how excellently until that night when he played a 20 minute solo. Musical genius. All those years ago..
Two other artists who testified for free speech were Dee Snyder and John Denver. That last must have surprised the reactionary Senators who were maybe expecting some support. They hadn't heard Denver singing with The Mitchell Trio.
I heard a story that when presented that music influences the youth and will cause kids to do what they hear. Zappa's response was something like, "well, I wrote a song about dental floss and I didn't hear anything about an improvement to oral hygiene." Not sure whether it's true, but that response sounds like something Zappa might say.
Damn, I miss Zappa so much. One of the most original concerts I've ever seen. He came out in a black tuxedo with tails and a conductor's baton and proceeded to orchestrate the entire band. He then picked up his guitar and shredded the hell out of it. I'm originally from Sacramento, California and there was a radio station called KZAP. It was named after Frank. He used to come to the station all the time when he was in the area and give interviews.
This is for an adult audience. Did you know that Tina Turner and the Ikettes are singing background and doing the no cooties on me! parts. IF you haven't done it before, look closely at the album cover. Lots to be discovered there. It is said that Frank sat with musical paper and wrote songs while flying to the next gig. Be well. Greg in TN 😀
Any musician that had "played for Frank Zappa" pretty much had a passport to play anywhere. Our son studied saxophone under Frank's former saxist, Paul Carmen, who played for a decade with him all over the world. He is now a professor of jazz at Idyllwild Arts Academy; Casey Abrams ilumni. Frank MADE musicians
I must admit, when I first heard this song, I was a little shocked (in spite of being a 19 year old hippie). Now I just think it’s hilarious and love that he “pushed the envelope” as only Frank Zappa could do! Great request and reaction. As soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew Harri would be blushing at least a little 😂! Thanks Harri and Lucas. 🌺✌️
Zappa was an incredibly creative musician. I remember buying his debut album, "Freak Out", when it first came out. And I pretty much did when I listened to it!
There's some recordings of the studio sessions for this (either in Eat This Question or Alex Winters Zappa, but also on TH-cam) and it's insane. Also look into what Ike did during this album for Tina and the Ikettes. I can't fucking stand Ike
Check out his live DVD "Does Humor Belong In Music?", highly entertaining. Zappa always surrounded himself with top shelf musicians because he was such a perfectionist. The guy was an absolute genius. In a world where that term is thrown around like smarties, Frank was the real deal.
By far my favorite "commerical" album of Zappa. Compsitions that can stand on their own but with fun, witty lyrics for people who like them. As a huge Tina fan aswell her and the Ikettes destory the vocal parts. Such a fun and competent album all around
Frank can form an Amazing Image in your mind. A Master Story Teller. Just some great Lyrics to give you an image exactly what he wants you to see. His 2:00 Rock Opera "Joe's Garage" is a monument to his story telling. This is not a tune I would introduce to a new Zappa Fan until he is firmly hooked. Something a bit easier to Digest. Try "Man from Utopia meets Mary-Lou" A much easier tuner. Or go with Zombie Woof, or Florentine Pogan, large catalog, so many different styles.
@nicholasmartin297 I know DWEEZIL is performing in Denver Colorado in Aug. But you can look up tour 2024. I've seen them 6x and they have never failed to impress.
My introduction to Frank Zappa was as a teenager in 1985 hanging out with a co-worker after work. He was a bit of a stoner, and his older brother was a huge Zappa fan. He was adamant that I'd love this crazy stuff his brother listened to, so he threw "Overnight Sensation" and "Apostrophe'" on the stereo and we sat there drinking beer and jamming. Been listening to him ever since, good stuff!
Zappa was a musical genius. Watch video of him on The Steve Allen Show playing a bicycle. The Mothers of Invention was an incredible ensemble of musicians, check out Joe's Garage, Hot Rats, Weasel Ripped My Flesh. So many great musicians went on to contribute to other great bands
Frank Zappa's music is definitely experimental, and very unique. He was a brilliant man, and a complete rebel before it became fashionable to be a rebel. I taught at the high school he graduated from for 10-years (decades after he graduated, of course). He's kinda their pride and joy now but was probably a challenging kid. It's called Antelope Valley High School and is in the high desert in North Los Angeles County. Anyway, his music used to make me laugh my ass off when I was a kid. My favorite Zappa album is probably Joe's Garage.
he had a young girlfried from antelope high...this story is unknown amongst most Zappa fans...he got caught by his father whilst fooling around with the girl....this is where and why Zappa loves doowop....right....his father made a B-line to her father and told him...The very next day she was gone...her house was empty and the parents probably being military family packed up and went....Frank knew nothing and the love of his life was gone without a goodbye... he later met her but time becomes a moat that one can't fathom... listen to this song that Frank never released while he was alive.... th-cam.com/video/XSPJ4qa-wLQ/w-d-xo.html this is why Frank has a soft spot for doo wop because it was their music as teens in love...
@@mikedemike5393 I listened to it! Cute song, and very interesting story! It seems like living in his orbit may have been a little daunting, but never boring. I can't believe he was ratted out by his own father. I can't help but wonder if it affected their relationship in any long-term way.
Listening to Mr. Zappa at the age of 17 in the 1970's was enlightening. Listening to him perform the songs from this album *live* was enthralling. But listening to him talk to Congress as an adult was electrifying. :D Everyone is still trying to figure out what political party he belonged to. That's a shame because Zappa was talking to *everybody* in that Congressional hearing and *every* single average American who cared to watch and listen to what goes on in Congress each and every day. Which is what we all *should* do since it affects our *lives* as the years go by...
They were very different artists, and both legitimate in their respective roles. Frank is inimitable though, with the closest homage belonging to Al Yankovich’s brilliant Genius in France tune. I didn’t feel this gent was suggesting that Frank was imitating Prince, he just noted some similarities with backing vocal styles. I’m sure that contemporaries of Mozart were probably saying he wasn’t worth a pimple on Bach’s ass too. I think Frank’s music is way more challenging, but Prince was a genius in his own right.
FZ is pure genius. While many do not care for the lyrics or topics, however the music and production are fabulous. My fantasy football team name is Dinah Moe's Boys
Yes, a man who would name his daughter Moon Unit, and his son Dweezil (or is it the other way around- I'm still confused), definitely fits into the "so different" category.
Oh man don't miss Stink foot, Bobby Brown, Dancin' fool and Muffin man. And keep an eye open for the clay animations Bruce Bickford did for Zappa's music. Bickford was a mad genius. If you go seriously into Zappa wait till you get to his classical material. Little known fact: Frank Zappa was included in the French dictionnary Le Robert while he was still alive. A rarity.
Zappa and Prince there are parallels, but they really are both entirely different. Both absolute geniuses. Prince was very much into his religious faith. Zappa was anti-organized religion and basically agnostic. Prince was a multi insturment phenom. Zappa was a very good guitar player, sometimes an amazing soloist, but not a virtuoso by any means. Both were orignal and brilliant in how the arranged their music and both as band leaders could be very demanding of their musicians. There are multiple facets to Zappa and no single song or even album can adequately define the man and his catolog is huge. He died only 54 years old and in that time released 62 record albums. "One Size Fits All" and his "Roxy & Elsewhere" albums is I think some of this strongest work and best band lineups.
Don't know why it never happened but Frank Zappa teamed with George Clinton would have been amazing. Take a look at some of the people who were part of the Mothers of Invention and you will be floored, Captain Beefheart, Lowell George, Jean-Luc Ponty, George Benson, Steve Vai, more...
Just found this channel, I think you may like, ONE SIZE FITS ALL, ALBUM. Fuckin tight, funkalishi, band. George Duke, Chester Thompson. It's a fantastic record, you'll enjoy.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✌️😵💨
The Overnite Sensation box set, and Have I Offended Someone, each have a longer mix/edit of the song featuring a mini-solo from George Duke "during a more realistically timed orgasm". (Time for bed, said Zappatydoodah).

That must have been one hell of a concert two amazing acts. I am jealous.
Frank was a huge free speech advocate giving testimony in Congress. Brilliant album is one of his best.

Joe biden too

I like the very manner of performance, such a funny voice, now very few people perform such music, R.I.P. Frank Zappa!
Frank always pushed it past the limits. Started following him when I was in high school in the early 70s. RIP Frank, you were one of a kind. 🎸🎸
That's Tina Turner and the Ikettes on this and other songs on this album.
That's cool to know ,thank you ! 🌞
@Robert-tj3qq Tina brought in Ike to listen to Montana after they recorded it and he said "wtf is this shit" he obviously wasn't a Zappa fan. 😆
@@chitownlee lol, yeah I could see that 🤣Tina got down ,had fun and had a good life 🌞

Recorded in Bolic Studio which belonged to Ike.... Turner. 😉
He asked Zappa to remove any credits to the Ikettes. 😅
Zappa one of the best .... HAKAD
Frank you naughty naughty boy. Great reaction
I love watching reactions to this Zappa track.
DANG!!!!
:D Indeed! "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow' is rather dang-ish too. Enjoy! :)
A song from his Overnite Sensation Album. More to come!!!

I can only imagine the reaction from the back up singers when Frank gave them the lyrics they would be singing on this album.

my brother-in-law loved him back in the day& I was too young to get it...went to see him anyway lol fun times
Loved Frank❤
Zappa is so brilliant! Just have to watch this one!
That drum fill at 1:58 sets up the next section so well.
Overnight sensation is one of my favorite albums, I still have my original vinyl copy. Tina turner sings back up on the album along with the Ikettes.

Franks answer to censorship!
Frank thinking out of the box?
No one told him there was a box!
Saw him in 75 at Mac in Hamilton. Miles & Lenny opened
frank didn't care who he offended and always spoke his mind...I seen him 7 times in concert and have about 30 cd's of his

Mentioning Prince in the context of Zappa is like comparing Beverly Hills to the Himalayas.

Hey, this sounds better than how I remember it. Is this a remastered and remixed version? (question to the Zappa fans) .... Frank is one of the best.

I'm sure your mum is a wonderful person seen how you have turned out ;-) And yes maybe not showcase these wonderful Zappa songs to her.
You have to do a reaction on "Montana" and "Inca Roads"
hi mom
FZ didn't like these live requests. He didn't use any "dirty" words in this. I guess that was the challenge.
Bwhahaha
