Re-watching your renovation videos also helps when people message you about certain details, years after you've put them up.

Hi Andy, just inherited a 1958 ML7 after my Step Dad died, (thanks for the ser no tip) yours is mint to mine, it looks like I’m on “a journey” just ordered a manual from Myford, it’s a good job I got it for nothing as it looks a money pit!….. don’t tell the wife😂, love you presentation, new subscriber👍

Thanks. I’ll have to do the same on my Myford ml7. Broken back gear cluster. 😢

Early 7s had soft steel spindles; hence the white metal bearings, because white metal bearings became so expensive Myford offered (about 30 years ago) a replacement hardened steel spindle with bronze bearings.

Hi Andy. You need to pull the cog of the shaft with your puller on the bottom of the cog, not on the collar as the shaft is threaded and the collar screws onto the shaft. The cog is press fitted onto the shaft and will come of but it’s quite tight. Then you can unscrew the collar. Let us see how you get on. Cheers Mark

Thanks Mark, it took a while but I finally worked it out! The little grub screw between the gear & shaft was also missing?
      Cheers Andy

Ah, it's on the end of the lathe bed, stamped on the side.

Keith Rucker has a TH-cam channel and as a huge library of old lathes, cutter grinders, and mills Manuels. I looked it up and it has links to UK database for myford and i was Able to find a photo essay on a rebuild. It looks like there are not threads on the end your pressing off, i would get a torch and look in the holes sometime there are two grub crews in one hole like a lock nut set. Hope this is useful. Thanks for sharing!

Like yourself, I also did engineering at high school, turned to that, 4th form dropping woodwork. Passed SC and also tech drawing. Was the only part of school I enjoyed, and the library.

Soaking with penetrating oil (referred to as weasel piss by ship engineers) over night and tapping the gear in the hope that the vibration will break it loose after a soak has a slight chance. Very slight. Hope you don't have to grind the gear off. Good luck Andy.

    Andy:
    Your dilemma with head stock.
The first gear is a tight push fit. early ML7 this gear was locked with a possible 2ba grub screw. The collar behind it with the grub screw is a threaded collar. A press will never remove these

Thanks, I worked it out after taking another look at the parts diagrams, got there in the end!
      Cheers

OUI!! It does look like it spun on the shaft. I believe that may be a sheered set screw or sheer key of some kind. Hard to tell....maybe go back to the site to see if they have an online or pdf manual.

Seeing you try to pull the endfloat adjustment collar off with the press and blowtorch was making me cringe, hopefully you gave up and got a copy of the manual 😢

First off , if your head stock bearing behind the chuck were
loose first the cap bolts were loose and remove the shim and that back will work even with that broken tooth , the gear is big enough that a broken tooth shouldn’t hinder it’s operation .
That lathe needs a thorough clean up before you start to tear it down ! As far as the spindle bearings are concerned they don’t make new ones ! I’ve owned a ML7 for 47 yrs and know these machines inside and out , just keep it clean and oiled .

Would've been a good idea to have blown all the crap off it first. Good luck with the rebuilding. It'll cost you a small fortune getting parts from Myford? Incidentally, Myford is owned by a holding company and just use their name for effect. The spindle is over £500 on its own. I know as I had to replace mine and they don't do those type of bearings anymore. You'll have to get the bronze type with the newer hardened shaft and probably scrape them to fit properly. You'd be better off buying another lathe that's usable unless you've money to throw away and just like the challenge of a rebuild. Either way, good luck with it Andy. 😉

Painful to watch, I think the collar you removed the grub screw out of is screwed on to the shaft and used to adjust end play in the thrust bearing.
Try getting between the gear and collar.

16:00 And you call yourself a mechanic.
Stick to old cars and bikes and leave the good stuff alone.
20:29 Can't help him. He ain't listing to me.
Clean the spindle and reshim, checking runout as you go.

Lol, there wasn't anything in the manual about how to remove. But yes, I am a mechanic & stripping down this lathe was an interesting project.
