That electrical room IS a fire hazard. I've been an electrician for 6 years and wow I've seen some BAD electrical room.
In our area ( NE Louisiana ) if a health/safety inspector saw that electrical room the restaurant would likely be fined AND the room would have to be cleared before they would allow them to open to customers and if it was found in that condition more than twice the fire marshall would require the management to take a fire safety course ( at their expense ) [ my wife is manager of a popular italian national chain and was required to take fire safety course before being promoted from line manager to general manager ] the electrical room in her restaurant is behind a door with a manager alert alarm so if the room is opened it flashes lights in the office and everyone has figured out not to open it without good cause.
There’s definitely some red flags being waved right now for that room! Not only that but that room just says prepare to die.
That is the exact reason I tell people with heavy door use to think about a Vinyl Strip Curtain so when the door gets left open or malfunctions there is a backup. Good job.

The electrical rooms just amaze me. Where I live and worked we were inspected several times a year and if anything was cluttering the electrical panels or the boiler room there was hell to pay.

@@ladeseddy5994 South Main Auto is about 90 miles from me, my old Toyota has been there twice, Eric O. was able to diagnose problems I'd never find and other shops wouldn't ever find. His shop phone rings all day long with TH-cam viewers asking questions, "Eric, quick question, it will only take a minute" he'd quickly go broke. He's a nice guy in his videos, in real life he's even nicer. He's intelligent, considerate and respectful to everyone he meets, and he knows exactly what he's doing. He likes difficult problems to diagnose, he really does.
I have one of those carts and I replaced the wheels with ball bearing roller blade wheels. The soft rubber tire kept clogging with debris. Now...Talk about easy to move! I had to put a "bridle" on the thing because it would roll away from me!
I put those on my luggage, massive difference! Can get them with lights too lol

In NYC they would get a ton of code violations unless they got the inspector on the take. Good video
I felt like instead of just run time, open doors meant that more humidity could enter in two different ways. The cold air should already have frozen off the moisture onto the coil which would meet equilibrium with the room during defrost, so you have low humidity inside high humidity outside. The second way is because the warm air holds an awful lot more moisture and once it cools off that moisture can't be held anymore so it condenses on the walls and evaporator coil. Since the evap is the coldest place, it will be the last place to melt and holds onto the now dry ice while the warmer doors and walls more readily give up moisture.
Hopefully not too far from reality...
I am really surprised codes is not on them about the power room. i know hear in PA cods would shut them down on the spot.
it's against national fire/safety codes and likely something against it in most all other countries.

the makers of those walk in coolers could add a 4 inch analog rotary dial like a clock, which spun once per day. they could install it right on the center of the radiator face, and if freezup occurred, it would cease the movement of the rotary clock dial, which when stopped could initiate increased defrost commands. any simple moving dial, or device which when stopped could force defrost until movement returned. it would end those freeze ups

I used to do IT for a grocery store chain. It's not just the electrical rooms that are a mess - and sometimes disgusting. One store, I had to take a break every 5 minutes because the dust (and who knows what else) was killing me.
Very much enjoy watching service calls after I get done doing service calls.

Watching this before I go to work. When I first started my boss had me doing PMs. Everytime i got to the restaurant I was scared I was going to run into an iced up evap.
I like to put the control probe in the coil and control by coil temp. It guarantees defrost. Settings vary, but low 20s with around a 15 deg diff works pretty well. Each box will be a little different, but it works out well on coolers.
The low signal bars are a from the limitations of the radio on your tablet device. You could get a dedicated Bluetooth radio dongle for your tablet to improve the signal.

I know depends on local codes but on some cities around Dallas /forth worth they prohibited the use of electrical/ mechanical room as storages and fire marshal requires to put up a sign of “by order of fire marshal no storage allowed “
Those rubbermaid carts I use matter if fact I have 2 a small one and a big one. They are great to carry items. That door was jacked up, if the customer did go with fixing the door you could've suggested putting rubber door sweeps to keep heat out. Electrical rooms are always a mess typical. Nice to see the comparison of 2 great tools being used. Great video on how a door is a big Key element of heat filtration. Thank you. Great work.

If something ever burns up in one of those panels left open, that whole building is gonna burn down.
@@matthewcantrell5289 Same applies with the panels left closed. The panels are not fire rated, but the risk is of course lower. In really sensitive buildings the panels itself must be in a fire rated room with its own fire rated access door.
Imagine trying to find the ONE breaker that'll stop someone dying in the next room. Imagine having to open and reset all the little ones after you pull the big one in your confusion. Imagine how pissed the customers will be. I hope their points of sale are on a UPS...hoo doggy.

There are excessive fire code violations in that electrical room. Everything from minor to major. I’d call my Chief and tell him I am closing this business until violations are corrected. He would probably agree with me.
Then they complain why you can’t shut off the power in an emergency. Maybe all the crap you shoved in there???
You know I find it funny. My restaurant has an early 80s era BOHN unit and compressor with no defrost in a building with no AC so the coils freezing up is a daily issue. Manual defrost by cutting the compressor baby!

I do apt maintenance and I found that same multi nut driver. You’re right, that things damn heavy, but it’s pretty handy when you need it.
those carts are a must for hotel service work, bouncing from one end of building to complete opposite and multiple floors non-stop, well unless you want to stroke out or something lol
Did large format trim-work in all the hallways of one and thought I was going to die running up and down the stairs to the saw outside. using 16' trim there was no way to cut it indoors O_O and all the room entrance doors are countersunk 3' deep, so a blooming million cuts between long spans, I'll never take on a trim job like that again lol

It looks like you have been to Harbor Freight. I have three of those roll around tool trays. Mine work great.
#1 Evap coil fan on the left, the fan on the right (hope you follow that) that fan has some weeble-wooble to it maybe due to the ice pushing on it. #2 If you take IR video from the side of the door you should be able to record the airflow. I can see airflow and I don't have he fancy unit you have, I have the old camera and in "live mode" I can see warm and cold airflow but that is difficult to get in a picture.

And what is your favorite temp controller? You mentioned one temp controller with ethernet connectivity and automatic defrost detection, that you liked very much.
I use a hand truck that can fold into a cart. Takes up less room on the van and can carry more weight when needed.

I see electrical rooms like that and I am more thankful that the catering dept is not allowed to store anything in them on the ferries I work on.

You can actually hear the difference in fan tone before and after you defrost the coils. Just goes to show what an impact it can have when iced up!

Did you get my email? I've seen worse electrical panels especially the workshop before I moved in. That's pretty bad like that one iced up from a while back. those are pretty big gaps around the door, it's gotta seal tight like a household refridgerator door. Yeah almost like it needs a bigger door. I love those carts. I bought a bunch.

people sometimes dont realize trades people can have more than 1 skill set, and might could do other repairs, it doesnt hurt to ask. like me I do welding on the side. so fab work is easy, for fun comment I have several similar doors in scrap metal pile. 2 with nothing wrong, replaced with different style during a remodel, a few cracked, but complete with hinge pins. company I cut meat for just replaces cracked or damaged doors, never seen one rebuilt, where do you find replacement door parts?

the electrical rooms should be always be accessible example if you have to shut off a unit that has catched fire, hope you made them move the stuff

Kind of odd to see a swing door like that on a box, i've seen them in between a WIC and a WIF but not just to the outside like that.
Walmart does this in there walk in coolers. It's usually just a single door swing door into the back room. But it's well insulated.

In the U.S. the next inspector who walks in will shut that place down and fine them for everything he can find. The fire code violation is likely 5,000 USD and there will be more.

The reason the probes had the same Signal strength is because Bluetooth is limited with the amount of radio power can output.

I don't think you can short out single phase ac motors with not controller by getting them wet. I thought that was only if they had some controller on them.

I've seen some bone-headed customers in my time...but running a cooler with the door missing is way beyond insane. You say, you 'get-it'.....I don't. Sorry, I don't tolerate this level of absurdity. I'd have dis'd this customer promptly by telling them everything is fine...and just keep running it with no door. And left. Stupid is what stupid does. This type establishment also prepares food that is spoiled and serves it with no compunction, whatsoever....just a matter of time before the health people end their game.

A question from a guy that doesn't know better: shouldn't it be illegal to store things in the electrical room? Isn't it a massive safety risk in case something goes wrong and you need quick access to the room/need to extinguish a fire there?
The first inspector who goes in there will fine them and shut the store down, some places get a 5K fine for that kind of violation.

What was that refrigerant R448? Is that the most prevalent refrigerant for med temp walk in coolers or is it R404a? That was my first time seeing that refrigerant. Thanks for your videos!
We’ve been using R448 for most of the new walk in cooler installs in Illinois. Replacing R404 out here.
I've done some fairly large capital project work in CA, and let me tell you, I hope that your customer's name/location never get out. I've had inspectors shit a full sized overcooked brick over much, much less serious code violations. How fucking stupid are some of these places putting stuff in front of active panels?? Do they just not know what they're doing or what??
Not triggered but that's a $5k fire code fine right there.
