  • In this GIMP 2.10 tutorial, I show you why GIMP's Resynthesizer Plugin (and the Heal Selection tool that comes with it) is better than Photoshop's Content Aware Fill feature! This tool allows you to quickly erase objects in your images with minimal input - even when the background is complex. I also show you where and how to download this plugin for your GIMP (download link below).
Check out this tutorial for an updated (and safer) method for downloading the Resynthesizer Plugin for Windows:

Great video, especially for Windows users. I don't suppose you fancy doing a video on how to download and install this onto Linux Mint (20.1) (assuming it's possible). That would be incredibly helpful. If not, I'll have to continue the old fashioned way with clone and heal. Unfortunately, none of G'MICs repair, inpaint methods worked on one of my photos I tried it on. Perhaps there was too much detail that confused the algorithm, I'm not sure.

In PS, you can quickly select the rooster, right click and layer via cut/copy, then clone, heal the background and now you have two elements of the photo. How in GIMP? Thanks!

Have you considered using G'MIC in yours tutorials?

Yes - and I already have a few tutorials featuring G'MIC. I would certainly like to incorporate it more in future tutorials, though. Thanks for watching!

I tried this heal selection tool but I get error message after I press OK "Calling error for procedure 'plug-in-resynthesizer':
The texture source is empty. Does any selection include non-transparent pixels?"

actually, I got error message when I used circle selection tool. If I use free selection tool, it works.

Is your selection tool set to the right mode in the Tool Options (i.e. Replace the Current Selection or Add to Current Selection)?

Hi Michael. I have a problem. I am a Windows user. My shift key doesn't work with zoom. I tried shift + 2 but didn't work. What could be the problem? Do you have any idea?

Did I say to use shift with the zoom tool? I meant ctrl. The ctrl key will allow you to switch between zooming in and out of your image. You can also hold ctrl and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

No you didn't say that. You're Gimp expert. I just wanted to ask you my problem. Go to view > zoom. There is a shortcut for 1:2 Shift +2. When I press Shift + 2 it doesn't work. Maybe it's a bug. Maybe my fault. Thanks.

I must ask why you showed this with such “easy” and forgiving backgrounds? Does the tool not work with anything with detail and straight lines? A fence for example? Or a wallpaper with a linear design? I mean, I’m not trying to toot my own horn but the effects you show there with these images you hardly need any special plug-in to recreate.

Didn't see any example as to why this is better. As good? Sure. Thanks for the tutorial though, useful plug-in.
