Thanks for the video....I’ll be installing my first “solo” rosette this weekend. I’m a bit nervous....the video helps.

Nice job! But when do we glue the rosette in the sound board? Greatings!

Thanks! The rosette is glued after I level it in place somewhat. Watch 13:14 in the video.

why use ebony dust? woudn't it be better to use dust from the same wood as the rosette?

Contrast between the rosette and the sound board. If he used the same material as the rosette, the outline of the rosette against the sound board would be “dull”. The super dark ebony powder creates an outline we can distinguish. You could use whatever color you wanted really.

Are there any cheaper circle cutting jigs for a dremel?? I have neither the circle cutting jig nor the router base to connect the dremel to the jig so I was just curious if there was any alternatives?

Not that I've seen. It wouldn't be too difficult to make one though. Even an adjustable one...
....but if you're not up for an adjustable one: At one point, I used to use a scrap of wood that was drilled for holes to fit the dremel base on one end, and then simply had a couple holes drilled at the other end for fitting into the pin. Of course, this is not adjustable, but I had the holes measured out and drilled so as to be in the exact place I needed them for the rosette I was doing at the time.

Hi Eric: Very nice job! I am getting ready to install the Rosette onto the sound board myself, so this helps out a lot. What size bit were you using? I am using a 1/8" bit myself. Also, what is the final thickness of the sound board before installing the bracing and gluing it onto the rim? Thanks again, Steve

Hey Steve, Thanks! Here I'm using a 3/32" bit but 1/8" works as well.
The final thickness of the soundboard is always different because every top
is a little bit different in it's cross grain stiffness, weight, responsiveness etc...
As you build more guitars, you develop a sense for this.
But just to give you a ballpark answer: .120" is a good target to aim for, when you are starting out and don't yet know what to "feel" for. I hope that helps!

Thanks Eric. I am guessing that .120" is somewhere between 2 & 2.4mm? From my reading it seems that the standard thickness is around 2.4mm for both the back & sound board.......

0.12" is ~3mm. 2mm would be very much on the thin side. Not that some people don't do it and get good results with it that thin, but I wouldn't call that "standard", atleast not to me.
Now the back plate can be thicknessed much thinner than the top.

Makes sense. Would a thinner sound board, i.e., around 2.4 to 2.8mm, make for a better sounding instrument because it would vibrate more & be more responsive? There must be a cut off whereby if the top is either too thick or too thin the sound quality will suffer? The physics behind all of this must be really fascinating...Thanks again, Steve
