Tamiya DT02 Holiday Buggy Speed Run Comparison

  • Hell my friends. As you may remember when I built my Tamiya Holiday Buggy DT-02 I upgraded the motor from 380 to 540 but I showed what you would need to do if you were going to fit the 380. So as the motor as ready to go in I decided to show you the difference between the stock and a 540 Sport Tuned in this speed comparison.
Mark joined me to video the runs but in between runs we had a little race with his Tamiya Heavy Dump Truck and the DB with the 380 motor.
Many thanks as ever to Mark for his help with the making of this video.
For both runs the buggy had full ball bearings, oil shocks front and rear, Tamiya TBLE-02S ESC and a 7.2 volt NiMH battery.

Hello from Iowa, you guys are fun to watch. I came forge holiday buggy, but I’m totally impressed with that dump truck. Wow that thing is awesome!

Great video Rob!!! Rolled a 10mph buggy, how? but at 20mph, damn near straight run, LOL. Your laugh is contagious my friend, much needed to me these days. plus Mark egging you on, give it the beans, go on son, is that flat out? OMG too funny!!! You guys are a good team, don't ever loose that. ATB, stay safe & do stay healthy mate!!!

Hehehe, couldn't handle all that power man but really I got bored of waiting for it so started to play with the trim and took my eye of it. I'm glad it helped mate, I think we could all do with some fun and laughter at the moment. Many thanks and the same to you and yours dude.

Missed out on this fun! Better late than never. Wow! 16 kph. That’s slower than my grasshopper with the 380 (goes around 20). Must be gear ratio or weight that slows it down even more. And fun to see that it actually has plenty acceleration …. And then just winds out after 1 second. That’s pretty impressive - from zero to max so fast. And what a difference that Sport Tuned 540 did. Was it with the 17T pinion? Must have been. My DT’s do around 35-36 kph with the torque tuned and a 19T. 33 kph is pretty impressive with only a 17T pinion. Anyways. Good video Rob. Enjoyed it very much. Hope you are having a great weekend my good friend.

I know I've missed loads since YT stopped sending me email notifications of new uploads and taken the notification bell off the Studio pages Doh!!!
Yes it is, just think how it would feel if you could get a full size car to do that lol.
Actually it was a 19T pinion as it was all I had spare so not that good. I've been up my sisters for the weekend to try and get some gardening done but yesterday was a washout and today she has invited the rest of the family over for tea so will have a house full. Many thanks and hope all is well with you and yours my friend!

Another fun video. Nothing like a couple mates hanging out having some banter with their RC's.
My son's DT-02 beetle has a Sport Tuned. I did change to metal cups and drive shafts and it seems fast. It is a converted Holiday Buggy.
I only realised the other day that the dump truck is the same size as the Wild Willy.

Delightful to see you two this morning! Great run! Doubled the time on your buggy, wow, even surprised Rob! Mark’s dump truck likes to show off with wheelies, raring to go. 😁! Rob, you do a good walk of shame too, 😆🤗. What a beautiful day and place for a run, except for the giants, 😆. Wonderful video!👏👏👍🤗💖

Hi Catherine. Yeah that's what it's designed for but he really needs to glue the tyres on now as they have started to slip. I reckon a brushless motor in the HB would get it wheeling on the grass or dirt but not sure about the tarmac with those spikey tyres. I can't watch my walk of shame, have to fast forward it lol. It's not a bad park but will be a lot better once all the refurb work has been done. Many thanks and hope your weekend is going well my friend.

Oh, that was great! I know it's easy for me to say, but I actually guessed it right on both speeds... It's funny how we can almost judge it from just the footage. I think it was a right decision to upgrade, the higher speed fits the buggy much better, and I bet it's ten times the fun to drive!
Have a great weekend there, Rob!

Hi Pete. Yeah we did quite a few runs over two days (didn't have time to fit the 540 on the same day). Yeah, the 19T pinion helped though. All good now but was in a bit of a mess for a few days trying to fix my office chair, bits and pieces all over the place and wearing out drill bits drilling holes in 2mm stainless steel lol. Hope you're having a great and peaceful Sunday mate!

No.... I may not believe you Blokes. 😜 According to Google, it's 6242 miles between my House and and Mark's House. Could fudge the numbers - and I wouldn't know it from this distance, without the Speed Meter!! LMFAO!!! 😆😜😂

Hehehe! I just couldn't handle the warp speed of that 380 motor lol.
We could set out a measured distance and do the math but that sounds far too much like hard work to me. Def worth sticking a bit of electronics on and letting it do it for us lol.
That did surprise me a little, I was expecting about 17 to 18 but didn't take into account the 19 tooth pinion gear stock is 17.

@@robbrennanrc I had previously wondered whether they felt that the drive train might not be up to transmitting the torque from a 540 motor, but thanks to you two I now know that it wasn't that. It is certainly likely to disappoint most kids when the 380's fitted, and to delight them with a 540 in its stead.
