The AD&D 1E DMG is a true quantum text. I have read it and referenced it for 45 years and I still find new wisdom...

Fun fact: the original Baba Yaga adventure, by Roger E. Moore, was published in Dragon Magazine #83: The Dancing Hut (lvls 10+). Incidentally, it was this adventure that introduced Baba Yaga's daughters Elena the Fair and Natasha the Dark. Sadly, the nitwits at WotC decided to (stupidly and lazily) combine Gygax's Iggwilv the Witch-Queen of Perrenland (who is most assuredly a Lesser Goddess in power) with Tasha the Laughing Mage (of Tasha's Uncontrollable Hideous Laughter) and Natasha the Dark.

By far, my favorite magical item of all time is the intelligent weapons. Especially if you don't reveal this fact until an inconvenient time like sneaking.

Watching on Easter Sunday - The tomb is empty, Christ is King. Happy Easter. 🐣 ✝️
1e DMG is my go to book for magic items (and a lot of other rules).
The Lum machine is actually the console of the spaceship from Expedition.
My current campaign rotates around using the dancing hut.

I was a fan of the Final Word sword. A broadsword that has to match your alignment, but if it does you always act last and it always hits if you are struck first.

2:57 I just gave the bard in my game (also my daughter) the “flute” of Valhalla. I described it as a gunmetal rust covered metal flute with sharp edges (can be used as a dagger +2). On the side are etchings of barbarian warriors pillaging and looting with Viking like helmets. She immediately said “I play Immigrant Song” which is the “command” to call the berserkers. Made me proud.
I also said if you can actually play the song on a real flute. I’ll upgrade the effects to maximum. She is practicing in her room right now ;)

Was always a fan of the original Sword of Sharpness and Vorpal weapons which (back in the day) lopped something off on a roll of 18-20 and 17-20 respectively. Dangerous.

1e dmg is wonderful. So useful. 5e dmg is almost entirely useless.

    Utility items are always fun.
Folding boat, Rope of climbing, Bag of holding and the Portable Hole which is one of the most useful and dangerous items in the game for my players to own. They have used it to unleash hell in a variety of formats. Their current favorite thing to do is to fill it full of water and dump it out on my poor unsuspecting NPC's.
Cursed items are a double edged sword.
Yes its fatal for the poor sucker that put it on but afterwards, now the players have it in their possession to use as they see fit...
I prefer cursed items that over time reveal their curse vs a "gotcha" item like Necklace of Strangulation :)
For instance: A Cursed Ring of Regeneration: For each hp it heals, it replaces part of your soul with the one that is trapped inside. Once it heals an amount of hit points equal to maximum the wearer has, they are possessed by the thing inside the ring >:)

Played in a game a long time ago that had sort of a "Machine of Lum the Mad" but it was an organ and depending on the song you played on it, some event happened. We had to go find the correct song to escape the plane we were trapped in.

My father was always a fan of the -1 sword which always returns to your hand because of all the things you can do with it.
Like selling it; after all, it is a MAGIC sword (and it comes right back, so just make sure you don't get into a fight before you leave town).
And because it is magic, it can also damage stuff immune to mundane weapons.

Deck of Many Things is a favorite. I enjoy chaos at my table a little too much, I guess. It has led to many fun encounters and adventures from pulling cards.
Rod of Lordly Might is a fun and useful item.
Necklace of Fireballs, useful but deadly to the party too. Had one character fail a save and the whole party went boom. My first time to TPK my group.
The Instant Fortress is a favorite of mine. A couple of my players have used it tactically to crush an opponent or three and have found unusual uses for the item. I am terrified but impressed at their creativity at times.
Anything with the dancing or defending enchantment on it.
Vorpal is also an always surprising but fun enchantment to have on a blade.

It might have originated from Dragon Magazine, but the Carapace set of items is great. Imagine a biological armor of Illithid origins that provides both a respectable AC bonus and depending on the type either a given stat enhancement or letting you see all around you.

Brilliant stuff bud. I just order POD AD&D GMG, Players Handbook, Monster Manual 1+2, Unearth Arcana and D&D Rules Cyclopedia (Basic) I am set for life :-P also Have shadowdark when I want to mix things up more.
One cool magic item I had in 4E was this 2+ Axe and once per day I could roll a D6 and it would change element damage. It was really cool, I know you dont like 4E but it was my first system lots of fun plus my Character from that was featured in different games we would play becasue I made him intresting without doing the whole critical roll type bs you see today being weird and quirky for no reason. Dwarf! Power!
