Genius idea with the filing cabinet. I'm excited to see the evolution of your backyard... And deck!

Great idea to use the filing cabinets, bad idea to put junk in the bottom of them if you are planting perennials b/c the soil will be sinking down as the stuff decomposes & then your perennial will be a foot below the top of the planter & you can't just plop more soil on it. That's fine for annuals, you just add more soil every year. Eventually the soil level will stabilize so you can put in the perennials. In the meantime, annuals & vegetables are a good choice. FYI, using the file cabinet is genius & I am so going hunting for cheap file cabinets. Thanks!

If I’m planting vegetables,I can put things on the bottom? Like cardboard, some logs?

The cardboard is going to get wet and sink very quickly. Great idea but I'm afraid you are setting yourself up to fail. You are better off putting empty water jugs and bottles (lids on) in the bottom. You can always put stumps of trees and branches (hugelkulture) if you aren't planning on moving it for a while. But, thanks for the tutorial. I am on my way to look for some cabinets.

Yes the cardboard did indeed not last unfortunately. The plastic would be a much better idea, thank you!

We just painted over ours and put it towards the back so you can’t see it!
