If you did want to say "You must not eat the cookies," it would be dürfen, "Du darfst die Kekse nicht essen." The differences in other model verb are more subtle, and sometimes I can't see a difference.

If yes, how should we decline it? for example, "Ich habe etwas machen können", "Ich habe etwas machen gekonnt", which one is correct? I just want to understand the rules. Thanks a lot in advance!
Compare these sentences and my English translations 1. Ich soll meine Hausaufgaben machen. I should do my homework 2. Ich sollte meine Hausaufgaben machen. I was supposed to do my homework 3. Ich hätte meine Hausaufgaben machen sollen. I should have done my homework For me as an English speaker, the past tense of sentence 1 is sentence 3, not sentence 2. Or is my English wrong? HIFLE! Is the correct translation of "sollten" "was supposed to"? Because I can't think of another translation in English that isn't actually the German conditional. I don't even know this is making sense at this point.
