This topic is so relevant for me right now as I’m in a state of transition. I’m a questioner, an analyser, by nature and find that as I grow, experience more, reflect on what has been, the choices I’ve made and resisted, and how all of that affects me, I need to write to help clarify what I want in my near future. Yes, it comes out in my work, their is a fragility, a wistfulness, and darkness that surprises me - yet doesn’t.
I'm so glad to hear this has been a particularly relevant video for you right now. I too am experiencing a period where I'm considering my work and its direction as are several of my students - it's in part why I made the video. Writing can be an excellent companion practice to painting - art making of any kind really - so thank you for mentioning it. It may helpful to others here. And thank you for watching!
You are so inspiring Marianne. I am 82 and have been painting for quite a number of years, but nothing extraordinary. Listening to you encourages me to go down a deep and inspired route. I am looking forward to what I am going to paint....I am glued to your videos. Thank you.
Awww thank you so much Joanne! It's so rewarding to know I am making a difference in the lives of artists like you. Seems people are "hungry" for the deep and inspired route! I've been on it most of my life so it's great fun to have others on the same road as me after 40 years of being on this road mostly by myself! Cheers to your artistic practice...
Such a good video. Thank you for all your insight. I really need to reflect on all those things that you brought up about my influences and past. That will take me a bit to put the pieces together. Presently, I’m trying to figure out why, the one medium (watercolor) I’m most experienced with and have a true affinity for, has left me feeling generally blah and unconnected to it now. I have ventured off into a lot of mixed media including acrylics, acrylic ink, pastel, oil pastel, and mono print. (I even tried the oil sticks and some oils and cold wax, but seem to have an allergy to the paint fumes, sadly.😢) Thanks for giving us all some real food for thought! Much appreciated. ❤
Yes, Carol, I understand and I've been there too. I think as artists we all wind up feeling blah about our tools, techniques and, yes, our work at several, maybe even many, times over the course of our practice. I'm feeling a bit like you are myself these days, and I've found it often means something new is percolating under the surface, in the subconscious, and waiting to break out. I can't wait to see what it is ... for me and for you!
Thank you for doing this! I've been doing a lot of soul-searching lately about why my art doesn't really express who I am now. You certainly gave me additional food for thought. Your two examples of emotional paintings really blew me away - that is the kind of thing I'm trying to let loose and do. I recently had my 80th birthday and so much want to express how I feel about getting closer to the end.
Well, happy 80th birthday! I'm so glad the videos are supporting some of the inner work you're doing to uncover what you want to say with your art - which can evolve or change over time just as we do. I hope you'll find this to be an exciting and rewarding process and please keep us posted on what you learn. Thank you for watching!
I find my voice in the silent moments of deep emotion. Where words cannot express those depths. A feeling of being at home in my emotions, in my choices, and my fates. The things that remind me of home. Laundry hanging on the line, soft furniture, a good book, plants and animals. In the expression of emotions that are not socially comfortable, but very real. Authenticity is a deep well I am exploring in new ways after the pandemic. It has made me more raw, but also more tender and warm. Thank you so much for sharing in such a passionate and empathetic way ❤
Wonderful observations. Thank you for sharing this as I believe many others will recognize themselves in your experience and your continued pursuit of understanding yourself.
By sitting by this dining table preparing to do my Greeting Card art that was given to me from up above, I'd listened to this TH-cam video segment of your's that you graciously placed here for other viewers and myself. Am so grateful for you doing this as well as explaining this all so elegantly. These words that came from within you not only opened my heart and eyes more, but, it also registered deep within me as I have no other artist that I'm truly close to or around me like I did a couple years ago in college to truly talk to about anyone of these things from this great small list. Would I love to do this now, yepper depper Dr. Pepper, I would savor and be even more grateful. Yet, I still am struggling besides battling daily with my mental health, acceptance, and with self doubt. In addition, finding an artist mentor or two and some serious art friends to be supportive and lean on. Hoping and praying, I will one day soon. I would love to share more with someone like yourself in this art family here. We all need someone. Enjoyed watching this video of your's as it was a royal treat. It was also what I'd definitely needed today! Thank You! Have a superb day and let it overflow into the weekend ahead!
Even loved the gorgeous homestead of yours in a magnificent picturesque setting. Thank You, for sharing things about yourself, too! This video will be seen more than once by me!
I recently found your channel. I think you have a beautiful soul and a calm demeanor. I enjoyed listening to you and your story. I've been painting for maybe four years now. Although I'm not inspired by my thoughts, the past or feelings. Maybe I never really thought about these things before. I just love to paint. Mostly I enjoy painting animals, dogs for instance. I love all dogs. I thank God for giving such a wonderful gift to us humans. Thank you and I will keep listening to your channel. ❤
We all paint for different reasons and "just loving to paint" is as good as any, particularly as a new painter. You're enjoying the process, the materials, and your subject matter which is all wonderful! As is your love of animals. We at Whole Artist Mastery agree...they are great friends! Thank you for watching and for your heartfelt comment.

This is one of the best art videos I’ve ever seen. It really gets to the heart of why people make Art.
