Dan Blocker died from an operation he had and after he was released from the hospital he had to go back to the hospital and the ambulance that picked him up took him to a hospital that was further away and he didn't survive the trip. It's not fair to blame his illness on eating too much. He wasn't that heavy, and worked every day. He had a huge amount of success. He was a Great person, God Bless Him.🙏✨
You are wrong, doctors even told him to lose weight BEFORE he had the surgery, he lost 40 lbs. but they had ask for double that. Dan's mother evidently ate too much during her pregnancy for him to be born weighing so much then his parents owned a grocery store so food was in front of him 24x7. he could never control his eating. He was that Heavy!!! He developed blood clots after he went home, not enough exercise. He had simple gall bladder surgery so how many die from that unless there are underlying health problems. I had it at 34 years old, my mom at 70 years old and my brother at 46 years old and all breezed thru it but we were not over weight. At one time Dan weighed close to 400 lbs.

I loved his character, what a great actor
As a child in the 60's, Hoss Cartright was one of my favorites. He ranked tight up there with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, James Arness, Ken Curtis, and others of that era of great performers of Western TV shows and movies. My dad was a big fan, too. When Dan passed, it was a sad time. The opening episode of the next season with Little Joe was very emotional. It's been over 50 years, but I still remember getting choked up and looking over at my dad, who was trying his best not to show how he felt. I saw extra moisture in his eyes. I will never forget that memory.

I am one of those kids who admired Dan Blocker and watched Bonanza every Sunday night. When he died it knocked air out of me it my really first experiences with death along with JFK, MLK and RFK and lost all interest in watching Bonanza.
I never watched many westerns (Oaters, as we called them)....I shoveled out the barn way too many times growing up in rural OR.......Sci/fy was where it was at for me....although Star Trek was too regimented......"Dark Star" was much more intriguing and better suited for me.
Although there was one theater in Portland, OR, in the early 50's, which showed three westerns (Oaters..we termed them) repeatedly all day long. As the eldest of five, I often accompanied my dad, we'd materialize into the theater, catch the movie somewhere in the middle, stay until we'd seen all of them thar "Shoot em ups" to the point where we started, then get up and leave....go to a local Chinese eatery where I was first exposed to deep fried oysters....still one of my favorites to this day. BHE

Blocker was a big guy, but he was hardly morbidly obese. He ceratainly wasn't in the same category as Jackie Gleason (when Gleason wasn't on a crash diet), William Conrad, or Orson Welles.

Meaningless clickbait video title. His diet had little to nothing to do with his early death. The blood clot caused it, which any person of any weight with any diet could have gotten after an operation back then. And BTW everybody, regarding his "shocking" diet including a dozen eggs and two loaves of bread each day for breakfast, it was the 2 LOAVES OF BREAD that were the bad thing. That's massive carbohydrates (starch = glucose ((sugar))). I'd guess he was an undiagnosed diabetic, at least type 2 with a huge insulin resistance problem (which the medical industry knew nothing about back then). When the body is confronted with high blood sugar, it turns the sugars into fat. It's overload of carbohydrates that usually "fatten" people, not the actual fat content in the diet. Hard to believe I know, but it's true. The eggs nor any of the meat/eggs/natural dairy he liked were negatively affecting his health.

@@tommurphy4307 Doesn't matter "what kind" of bread, it's ALL made of starch, which is long chains of GLUCOSE molecules (blood sugar). I know this sh*t, I study it daily. A so called "healthy" high fiber bread, whole wheat or whatever, is STILL starch, but because it's "higher fiber" it MIGHT only turn into 80-90% as much glucose in the blood stream as white bread, and maybe 10-20% slower. It's STILL a huge problem, especially 2 LOAVES of the stuff at once FFS. I just looked up "carbohydrate content of a slice of high fiber bread", and it comes up SEVENTEEN GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE. A can of Coke has THIRTY NINE grams. So every TWO pieces of bread almost equal the carbohydrate/blood sugar of A CAN OF COKE. A loaf of bread has 20-24 slices, so lets go "conservative" at 20 slices. That means EACH loaf had the carbohydrate content of TEN cans of Coke. So when he was eating 2 LOAVES of bread he was eating the equivalent of 20 CANS OF COKE worth of carbohydrates/glucose/blood sugar. Imagine if he was eating "white" bread and larger 25-30 slice loaves, and even MORE bread at lunch/dinner... do you SEE. Hoss was NO DOUBT an undiagnosed diabetic.

You are right about him not being overly fat. However big or small you may be everyone's heart is about the same size so his heart worked harder from day one. That leads to an enlarged heart which is because it's a muscle it enlarges with more stress put on it. The same thing happens with hypertension.Very large people have shorter life expectancy even if they are in good condition.

What is very interesting about Dan Blocker was although he played the sometimes dimwitted and not so bright Hoss Cartright while the other characters were much smarter, he in real life was the only one with a college education. Cool stuff.

Dan Blocker died after a blood clot developed following gallbladder surgery causing a massive embolism at 43. Much too young for a great man and actor to die.
Norman Chaney who played Chubby on The Little Rascals died at 21 and weighed 110 at the time of his death. He weighed 300 Lbs. before he went on his diet.
It takes more than just a regular family Doctor who is qualified to help a patient lose weight on a sensible diet. It has to be someone who is a qualified professional that can assist someone to a healthier lifestyle. Trying these diets with over the counter diet pills can make someone very sick or can kill them.
All true. I will also add to that that this video does include a brief 1-2 second transition sequence at 21:27 clearly revealing that Dan Blocker offscreen apparently was a cigarette smoker. I dont think that blood clot was a result directly of the gallbladder surgery, that was simply *the final straw that broke the camel's back,* _in a manner of speaking._ Gallbladder surgery alone does not directly trigger blood clots in lungs, cigarette tar buildup does. Chronic tar buildup, further exacerbated by obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels (i.e. a carton of eggs just at a breakfast meal alone ?), etc etc.. I'm 59 and even back then the combination of those factors was a known medical equivalent of playing russian roulette with one's health.
Also agree with your comment that OTC substances are as much powerful a health hazard as prescribed meds since there's no control factor. There's technology now that a car driver takes a breathalyzer before their car will start, but as far as I know there's nothing similar like that stopping misuse or abuse of OTC meds that can be purchased by anyone, even minors. As an aside, even ordinary lemon extract, considered a mild inconspicuous grocery item, used in flavoring of baked goods, pastry items, deserts, cake icings, etc, sold freely without restriction, has a surprising amount of alcohol, potency comparative to wine over beer products, clearly stated on the label, _that noone reads,_ including cashiers, while ringing it up to anyone _including minors._ There could be a barcode alert prompt warning within the programming of retail checkout cash register POS devices (point of sale), alerting checkout cashiers that the item being rang up at checkout contains alcohol (prompting customer age-verification check)but, once again, not surprisingly, there isn't. That product is sold typically in very small containers that resemble nearly identical to a bottle of visine or clear eyes, with a very small label, etc etc, and is just scanned across a checkout barcode scanner, then sold. Just like that. I've witnessed it a million times, never understood how that's legal, but apparently it must be. I guess nobody bothered to notice but me.

1979 I joined the National Guard and in boot camp we had a huge guy named John...of course we all called him Big John. The drill sargeants on occasion would measure him...he passed because his fat % was low enough. I always wondered how his horse felt about it. Loved Dan Blocker, especially in that Tony Rome movie.
You can bet he had the largest, strongest and youngest mount in the corral and his takes on horseback were probably shorter than some other character.
I have been to O'Donnell, Texas and the story is still told there of how teenage Dan would lie down on the ground at one end of the family store's porch so young kids could run the porch and jump onto Dan's stomach.

Dan was a good man he obviously loved his country! He would have made a great neighbor! He was a business man invented Hoss steak house I believe and Bonanza? He loved small theater He and Pat Boone Michael Landon and Lorene wanted to start a Ski Lodge in Eaglesmere PA back in the 60s. He was an entrepreneur in some sense with a good guy joking side!
As a kid of 8 dan was one of my tv super must watch heroes in bonanza ,the whole family would sit together with crisps and nuts etc .... im 66 now and worry about this generation and bleak looking future , anyways dan blocker was a god in our house ,mum always would be rooting for dan ,great times great programs ms cdf uk
It wasn't just the loss of Hoss though. In that last season or two, Landon basically took over the show and was making a tear-jerker drama like Little House on the Prairie eventually became. That's not what Bonanza was all about.
An amazing human being, embodying what life is about. Work hard, study hard and seek opportunities. Fought for his country and realized all this fighting is not necessary...a true angel with a heart of gold. I am not a fan but I am now! God bless his soul.
My dad was born and raised in Dekalb, Texas. Every time I go to Dekalb to visit family, I go to Dan Blocker's grave which is just a few rows from my family's plot. It's hard to miss. He has the biggest tombstone in the cemetery. A humble man from humble beginnings.
There is an upload on TH-cam where he is favoring China, if he lived I wonder if he would have changed his mind. I saw him in Europe once while on vacation. He was with his wife and was wearing overalls which I think was easy on his waist and comfy. It was not long before his surgery.
I started watching bonanza at a young age, and still watch the episode too this day. It was and still is my favorite western show. In my opinion bonanza will never get old. I loved all the episodes. RIP to all the Cartwright's characters.

My Uncle was a bartender at a very famous restaurant in Los Angeles. He said he saw Dan Blocker on many occasions order the largest cut of steak and commence to put away the meal with ease. Staff and patrons would be in awe of his capacity to consume so much food. My Uncle remembers hearing the sad news about the actor but was not shocked. RIP

I was a cook at the Alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito CA. Dan and his Family were regulars for Sunday brunch
When I was 17 I saw Dan Blocker at a SCCA sports car race at the Los Angles County Fairgrounds in 1960. He was in the passenger seat of some exotic European sports model and the car had stopped to engage the guy who headed the group I was with. We had to turn around on our low bleacher seats to see what was going on.
He had an enormous grin and talked at a distance of some 30 feet with our guy. I recall that he was very flushed in the face and that probably was the effect of a double dose of the heat and beer.
He was said to like sports car racing very much.

My parents went to school when he attended Sal Ross. They were friends. I tried to reach out to his son to give him all of the correspondence but he wasn’t interested 😿. He didn’t want it. I was asking for a P.O. Box not where he actually lived at. If it was my parents I would have wanted to read them!

I remember watching Bonanza when i was 7, and Hoss was my favorite character. No doubt, thanks to Dan. The video didn't show much at all about his diet except a tiny bit at the end. I was hoping they showed more according to the title. I do miss great shows like that which they can't make anymore. Like all things in the past, it can never be done again. It just was a different era back then, which I'd trade for any day. Continue to Rest in Peace Mr. Blocker. Im sure you are re-united with family and co-stars.

He was big rather than fat. PE’s are killers and as he was a smoker that triples the risk. Back then we’d never heard of a heart healthy diet! But he was active and that helped. And he rode very well.

I remember exactly where I was standing when I heard Dan Blocker had died. I was outside at my marina. I remember the direction I was facing and the weather. It was the same as when I heard JFK was murdered and the Challenger disaster.

Dan Blocker's character "Hoss" was, by far, the coolest and most identifiable character on Bonanza.

Dan Blocker and my brother-in-law (both deceased) were roommates at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene Texas, they both played football for HSU.
So, the headline suggests that Dan Blocker died based solely on the large intake of food and dieting, but Block actually died from complications from a gallbladder surgery that was linked to the doctor not prescribing Blocker with the proper post-surgery medications such as blood thinners to prevent blood clotting. When Blocker requested an ambulance to take him to the nearest hospital, the ambulance driver had taken Blocker to the furthest hospital resulting in him being dead on arrival.
Dan Blocker was a big guy but not overweight for his size . The show made him appear to have a huge appetite. He died from complications after an operation.

I remember as a kid in the early 60s watching Bonanza, my favorite show. Seeing images of Dan Blocker takes me back to childhood days.
His death had nothing to do with his eating habits. What kind of sick individual even say that?
Died in the hands of the doctors . . . medical "care" is enough to give you all the worries you'd ever need.

He always seemed to get himself in funny situations through no fault of his own. To me he made Bonanza. I just watched The Flapjack Contest the other day. Of course Little Joe was always scheming to make money off of Hosses strength or appetite. 🙂

Dan Blocker was well educated (Master's Degree), which a lot of people don't know, also I saw an episode of The Flip Wilson show and he was the guest. He and Flip joked around together at the end of the show. Worth checking out.

I was a big kid, he was my hero, I wanted to be just like him. I had a hat just like his when I was about 7 years old.
My grandfather died from a gall bladder operation. He had a heart attack while being operated on.
Bonanza was a Sunday night staple for my brothers and I... Hoss was the best part of the show for us...we'd be really disappointed if it was a show without Hoss!
I just wanted to see "The SHOCKING diet that killed Dan Blocker" not his whole lifestory from cradle to grave. RIP Dan.

One of my favorite characters in the show, something about him and the entire show was comfy and felt like an era that won't be repeated.
My 6th grade teacher in West Texas told us that Dan Blocker was once one of her students. I don't doubt the lady. She was one great teacher. I knew she cared about her students and helped them out as much as she could.
My grandmother loved that show.
I'd watch with her and yup, Dan's was my favorite character.
I agree with some of your commenters that Dan wasn't all that heavy and I site the wrestler Haystack Calhoun who I believe that it was said of him (Haystack) that he weighed 600 lbs.
Hoss was a great role model in Bonanza. I ate at one of his restaurants in Birmingham as a teen. Great thick fatty steaks with a huge potato and salad bar.
Good selection of clips but I noticed his scenes in Maverick aren't included. He didn't have a speaking role but made quite a splash in this contemporary spoof of Gunsmoke.

Mr. Blocker, Hoss, was my Bonanza favorite. He was the first “star” that passed away for me and I could not believe it. I was 12.
He should have received more medals, especially medals for valor.
He was one of TV's greats. My Dad knew a Guy (customer) that purchased Dan Blocker's Cabin Cruiser. It was a sweet boat and had high performance engines in it, A real classy boat with lots of teak wood. what's weird is that the boat
was parked outside the guy's shop for many years after He bought it, and it basically rotted away. The same guy also had a concrete swimming pool full of bass and the water was a murky green. lol.

Eating eggs and steak didn't kill Dan. It would have been the two loaves of bread for breakfast that did it!

We all loved Dan and the part he played. It is sad he left us so soon.
