I used to have only 35mm for everything. I was missing something wider and something narrower. Then I sold 35mm, got this 20mm (partially because of this review) and Loxia 50mm. That was the best decision I could make. The 20mm is great for me when doing environmental portraits and landscapes. Haven't use it for close p photo yet though. It is very high quality lens and if it lasts, I will have it for a lifetime.
Because I am thinking to purchase this Sony lense, so I watched lots of video recently, by far yours is the BEST review about this Sony 20mm F1.8 on TH-cam. Alot of sample photos, this is what lense review about. Great Job!
Thank you for the answer. Once I needed to know this, I search on the internet but coulnot find anything :) they say minimum focus does not say to the sensor or to the front element
FYI, the lens doesn't have focal distance markers because its not mechanical focus, its focus by wire. The position of the dial will always be relative.
Negative, "The FE 20mm F1.8 G also offers a linear response manual focus ring to give more control over manual focusing" - No Film School It appears as though it's linear in it's response, whether or not it's mechanical
Thanx Pav, love your stuff generally but your 20mm Review convinced me this was the way to go. The fact that you can use a Filter System on it was the deal winner for me, it is absolutely a fantastic lens - thanx I appreciate.
Just got this lens and it’s immediately one of my favorite ever. 30mm equivalent when in crop mode on an a7riii + 20mm is so useful. Excellent build quality and af, optics, everything. Stacks up really well against even the GMs I’ve had. And so compact!
Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I noticed the price you are showing on UK Digital. I use E-infinity for all my Sony bodies , lenses and third party lenses and they are always so much cheaper than everyone else. I paid £759 on E-infinity. I have used them for 3 years and have been very pleased with the service. I visit UK often to see relatives and I take the opportunity to order gear from there and take it home. I have 4 Sony bodies A9 A7RIII and 2 A7IIIs and a lot of F1.4 and 1.8 lenses that I bought from there. You should look them up and compare. Nice video with good examples. You have an accent. I think Polish. This would make you a neighbour and fellow Slav.
This lens is a whole ton of fun. Zero regrets here. Re angling up or down. I had the same thing. I was shooting the International Space Station flying over. The bottom third of photo was houses and a park. At the edges, the houses were pretty bowed when the camera was tiling up but zero issues when it is level.
it is nineteen centimeter ( focus distance) from the sensor not the front of the lense , exactly the white cercle with a line crossing it on the top of the camera ( over the 4k marking ).
What do you mean? I have the opportunity to buy either one and price is pretty much the same. Which one would you pick? I know both are wide lenses one a little wider than the other. Your input would be helpful
@@rubenramirez8241 one has got wider aperture. Only you can decide which one is right for what you are going to use it for, for the camera that you have and your experience using your gear already. I cannot tell you which lens is better for you. Sorry. I've also never used the Zeiss lens
Ive had it for the last two weeks and I keep carrying other lenses around, but i just cant seem to bring myself to take this one off yet lol. Before chosing this I had almost gone w/Tamron and im so glad i went w/this instead.
I have the Rokinon 20mm1.8 I wonder how it compares . The Rokinon is my favorite ride angle lens infuse it for low light and street photography on my Asp-c camera
You can't put distance marker for manual focus on a lens that has a 'focus by wire' focusing ring. For distance markers you'd need a focus ring that has hard stops and a mechanical ring!
The a6600 is an aps-c sensor, so 1.5x crop over full frame. The sigma 16mm will look like 24mm on the a6600, this 20mm lens will look like 30mm. The sigma is also f1.4 which will make a difference in low light performance and bokeh. At $400, since you're not using a full frame camera, the sigma makes more sense.
@@PavSZ thank you for your reply! I have an 85 1.8 and a 28-75 2.8 so I am looking something a little wider than my 28-75. However I do a lot of portrait and video as well, so I am trying to decide between the 20 or the 24mm , I can only afford one of them. Which one would you recommend?
If you seriously want wider then 17mm will probably disappoint you, I would go for the sigma 14-24 f2.8, or if you're rolling in money then the Sony 12-24 f2.8
@@PavSZ you don't have to dude. I didn't mean it that way. I enjoyed your video. Was something I noticed. Keep up the good work. Im planning to buy that lens :)

Pav SZ the wider the better!!!
I am used to 24mm as that is the minimum focal length of most of the comp[act cameras I own.

Just a note, the minimum focus distance (19cm) is measured from the sensor, not the front of the lens :)
That makes sense!!!! Didn't know that Thanks Luke!

I chose this lens over the Sigma mostly because of that fixed lens hood on the Sigma! 😡

Good lens review like always. The minimum focus distance is from the mount, not from the front of the lens.
How close can you get to a subject then?
The focusing distance is measured from the plane of the chip and not from the front element. 19 cm from the chip is same as 6 cm from front element.
yes
Awesome review, thank you. Would you recommend this lens over Sigma 16mm f1.4 for A6600? Thank you.

K&F Variable ND filter. Thanks for watching and subbing!

Very nice content and sample images bro...

is it silent while recording? will the sound of the focusing/aperture adjusting come through in the video audio??
I think it is silent enough. Standard Sony
Can you adjust aperture with camera as well or have to use aperture wheel?
yes of course - you put the aperture ring on the lens into 'A' and then you can control it via the camera
For portrait shots and video, would you recommend the 24mm 1.4 or this 20mm?
20mm is too wide for portrait in my opinion - 24mm is just about ok for portrait but 50mm or 85mm would be much better choice

well spotted!
I already have the 24GM but looking for something wider. What would you pick? This 20mm G or the Tamron 17-28??

I believe most of the Sony bodies have IBIS so you'll be fine.
