  • Gothenburg is Sweden’s second-largest city, behind Stockholm, the country’s capital. Correspondingly, the city’s Landvetter Airport is the country’s second-largest, behind Stockholm Arlanda. However, as recently as 2015, Gothenburg also had a second, smaller commercial airport. But why is this no longer the case?

    NO WAY! So cool that you made an video about my local airport (I live in Säve). It’s was a brilliant airport because Ryanair provided good destinations and It was much easier to use and get to instead of Landvetter. I could have technically walked to an international airport which is so weird.

      I'm lucky to be able to walk to my local international airport. That airport is Edinburgh, the walk takes me 35 mins.

      I'm not a fan of Ryanair, I can tell you that.
      I usually fly Aer Lingus to Ireland instead.

    Flew to/from there many times. One interesting thing is that when exiting the terminal, you'd usually see tourists stand and wait for the airport bus, while most locals walked a couple hundred metres to get to the local bus stop by the road and pay a fifth of the fare.

      This is also a 'lifehack' in Melbourne & Sydney airports. Instead of paying $30 for the airport bus (Melbourne) or the train, you can walk about 100 metres to the local bus stop that's inside the airport, and catch the city bus to the nearest metro train station for a few dollars. This is actually more convenient if your last stop is between the airport & city centre because the airport coach/train goes all the way to the city without stopping.

    I like how he said the swedish words. I live in Sweden and I would say he was quite good on pronouceing stuff like "Hisingen", "Göteborg", ect.

    Back in 2006 I went on a group tour and we flew into Säve/Gothenburg City from Stansted (via Ryanair of course). What I remember was that once we got through immigration/customs and walked out of the terminal to our bus, we saw the 737 that we had just gotten off of turn around and take off again - I wonder if Ryanair figured it was more economical to fly with nearly twice the amount of fuel to allow for quicker turnarounds (and letting the airport foot the bill of all that extra fuel weight on the taxiways).

      That's a common practice called tinkering actually. Short flights/flights to areas with expensive fuel costs will fuel up for the return trip too, to save costs

    Let me understand this......your airport becomes super popular and presumably super profitable because of the scheduled passenger service, so instead of making small upgrades to enable that to continue, you shut down that entire operation.....

    I flew there from Stanstead in the early 2000's, and paid about £ 20 for a round trip. On the return leg Ryan Air's 737-200 went technical, and I eventually flew back in a BAC 111!

    Flew in and out of City a few times around 2004 with Ryanair. I was working for a company with HQ is Karlstad and got the train. I remember it being a typical “shed in a field” Ryanair destination of the time. Back then Skavsta was actually pretty similar but that has been completely transformed now.

    Well. Being from Sweden and growing up in the area; I’ve flown from Säve quite a number of times.
    - Small terminal with nothing there. It looked like a shed on a field basically. The pub was like two tables airside.
    + All of the above! Sadly the airport coaches followed Ryanair’s recommended check in times but the place was so small that you easily cleared it all in less than half an hour. Everyone conning early usually resulted in a shit load of people standing at on of the two (?) gates.

      Has the A330 CEO (classic) edition ever flown there? That is a modern widebody aircraft, built in the 1990s. Also, it is sad that an airport fell out of business. Thankfully it is used as a General Aviation one. :)

    I think I did actually fly Stansted to Gothenburg City roundtrip on Ryanair in the early 00's. I remember thinking that the airport was particularly small, but not much else.

    I live in Göteborg and I’ll have to say that the airport is and always have been extremely unknown as a commercial airliner airport. Currently it houses flight clubs and SPU Pilot training school. 👌

    I think the deeper story here is that the airport was probably being mismanaged if they were unable to save up enough revenue from 800,000 passengers a year to make runway and taxiway repairs. There's something deeper going on there.

      The airport was out of date long before Ryanair started flying to it. The terminal felt more like a metal shed on a field than a secure airport. It would require massive investments to rebuild it to modern standards, which wouldn't be viable when also competing with already modern Landvetter. There simply isn't enough flight traffic to/from Gothenburg to support 2 modern airports

      @@johantaube3022 yes but also I reiterate, 800,000 passengers a year. Let's say you charge $5 a passenger, that's 4 million a year (and that's a totally reasonable charge, Heathrow charges some £42 per passenger plus insane landing fees per aircraft plus parking fees per aircraft)
      My local small airport managed to build a totally new, small terminal with about $15 million, so they could do that with four years of revenue. Same idea with runways and taxiways. Monetize the new terminal too, like my local airport did add retail and find vendors and start taking in rental income and add a surcharge on all purchases. Build a parking lot and charge for parking.

    I'm sure there would be less clicks if you said 'airport had to ban A-320'. Infrastructure, is always important, & I would be interested to find out who instigated the flights to this airport, the airport or Ryanair? If it was the airport, they should know what the weight capacity of their taxiways were. Ryanair, I suspect wanted not to pay the cost of flying into Landvetter.

      There should have been a route development program at the airport which takes into consideration airport infrastructure. This is normal done by the airport operator/owner however it can be subcontracted to a consultancy firm.

    Not sure how critical it was, but noise pollution was also an issue with lawsuits in Miljödomstolen (environmental court) which took forever. Upgrading a small military / GA airport into flying large jets have significant impact and several houses needed to be rebuilt. If I understand correctly Gothenburg City Airport closed 2015, just three years after finally loosing the last battle about financial responsibility for the noise corrections etc. so maybe taxi way repairs was just one more issue for a financially burdened airport.
    On a personal note, as someone who had to drive to this airport in pre-GPS days, who the F is responsible for road sign in Gothenburg? I lost like 30-60min just getting lost with signage missing or way to small/hidden. Gothenburg certainly did not treat it as a “real airport” that people unfamiliar with the location should be able to find to. Based on those experiences I certainly would plan any important trip over Landvetter. A longer trip to a normal well equipped airport without weird unexpected problems.
    So in my mind, it felt like Gothenburg never decided what they wanted with Säve. If we wanted a secondary airport, we’d support the airport / home owners financially, and make the traffic signs actually help people find the airport. Not treat an airport as garbage.

    I took the ferry a couple of times from Newcastle to Göteborg. I didn't realise that RyanAir was part of the reason I can no longer (easily) get my car to Sweden.
    They just went down even more in my estimation!

      Can't understand why anyone would complain about a landing that you can walk away from .Over the years I have made over 1000 flights and every landing was a good one in my book-I walked away from.then all.-what more could you want .!!

    Interesting that I instantly knew, which Airport would be mentioned, the moment i saw the Thumbnail. Well I guess that's because I actually have flown via Säve a few times. But I think we all have to agree, that Landvetter is superior in almost every way. But obviously it still is very sad to see an airport (partially) cease operations. But at some point in time, the flights I used to take to fly to Göteborg were stopped, which is why I then got used to flying from Berlin Tegel to Landvetters flygplats. With airberlin. This sadly isn't possible anynore either.

    I flew out of Save a few days after 9/11. Or rather I didn’t... the flight got so late that it was no longer allowed to use the airport, so we got bussed to the main airport with police outriders. Bus went straight onto the apron and we got on the flight. I remember not being allow hand luggage or anything for security.
    Great airport though, I was working for Volvo at the time and the plane virtually scraped the roof of the Volvo engineering building on the way in. Very convenient! Sad it’s no longer in use.

    I did! I flew both commercial as well as the ambulance helicopter which is stationed there. At the other end of the airport there's an exceptionally interesting aircraft museum housed in the former "nuclear proof" hangars.

    Sounds like the airport is owned by a government and not by private investors. A private commercial airport would just do the necessary repairs instead of practically shutting down.

    They could open it again, but restrict it to smaller aircraft such as the Airbus A220 and Embraer E-195, and only allow full-service and charter airlines (i.e. low-cost airlines forbidden).

      That's probably Amapolas SE-LJY. They fly it for the Swedish Post office and is made in some hybrid ANA-like livery.

    If the taxiways are crumbling and not worth cost repairing, then the aviation regulator and airlines would have major concerns about debris entering (basically sucked) into large jet engine intakes. Airports take FOD (foreign object damage) seriously and regularly send out vehicles to survey the runway and taxiways. Large jets only really like sucking in air and rain. Birds, rabbits, ice, stones and chunks of concrete can have nasty affects - like destroying the engine. Eg Miracle on the Hudson, US Airways double engine failure due to bird ingest.

    I did use this airport many times to visit London. But it’s not as nice a Landvetter Airport or Arlanda

    How did they not know the pavement capacity before granting permission to 737's and A320's? Seems like that'd be part of the due diligence yo you know...make sure your airfield doesn't get wrecked.

      It was the taxiways not the runway which the owners claimed were too expensive to repair. Did you not listen to the video?

    Funny how Göteburg city airport closed to 737 & A32F, while Brussels Airlines got an exemption to operate A319 in Stockholm Broma 🤔😉

      It simply is a bigger airport in a way that it can handle aircraft like the A319 without problems

    I've used this airport a lot back in the days. Sadly it wasn't any good with only two gates and a very limited amount of shops. Personally I prefer Landvetter as it's bigger and better.
    also, you pronounced Göteborg very well considering that you are a foreigner

    I flew from this airport many times, it honestly is a terrible airport. Small, cramped and cold in the winter and then you had a Ryanair flight to look forward to. Only reason why I heard Ryanair chose to fly from this airport was because at the time, Landvetter ground crews did not want to do the quick turnarounds of the jets so that’s why the chose Säve instead.

    Interesting that they didn't just strengthen taxiways with such high usage... They must've been profitable. They have the best technology for it. The Scandinavian countries build roads and highways that are far superior to the rest of the world.

      Apparently the cost of repair was too high. They would have to literaly digg up the whole taxiway and rebuild it from scratch
