"I was a wife, I was a mother, I was alive, now I'm a monster..." It HURTS that Nott/Veth has Othered herself to the point of not realizing she was always still family to Yeza and Luke. Lilli, you always surprise me with new (painfully, PAINFULLY) insightful descriptions of the Nein. This was beautiful.
It reminds me of my sister. She's trans, and sometimes she has such...disgust, for who she was. But I knew her then, and I know her now, and I loved her at both times. There was never anything wrong with who she was, even if who she was, wasn't right. I think it's important to find love for who you are now, even if you're striving to, know you have to, won't feel right inside until you, change. (I know it's not exactly the same, Veth was one way, and someone forced her to be something else, and she was seeking a way back, but it resonated all the same.)
Can I just say I LOVE the journey of emotions that her face goes on when she sings that line! Once she get's to now I'm a monster you can feel the dread and fear seep in. Absolutely beautiful
@@Lurklen As a trans woman, I can say Nott / Veth's story really resonated with our community a LOT. Sam's even talked about it a bit on Talks Machina, that he didn't write her as a trans allegory, but is happy that people resonated with her. This line, specifically, brings tears to my eyes every single time. It hurts, but in a cathartic way.
"You’re covered in dirt, and I hate the water We both know it hurts to be seen" "You tell me I’m brave, when before I was not(t)" ...oh this is just brilliant writing.
Though Nott/Veth is one of the funniest characters (probably because it’s Sam), I’ve always felt her story is the most tragic. You’ve portrayed the tragedy of Nott the Brave / Veth Brenatto so beautifully. My favourite lyric: “You’re covered in dirt, and I hate the water” Like they’re both afraid of getting clean or coming clean, in more ways than one. Lovely stuff!
"I found a friend after the fire". wow. the caleb-nott relationship is really well done. all the water symbolism and references. excellent. I'm really looking forward to Caleb's song!
The way the song ends tells me that the story is far from over. Lilli dose an excellent job of portraying the MIX stories and a big fact of the matter is that all of them still have a lot of growth ahead of them, and they have already come a long way.
"and I feel myself again (I will feel myself again) (I will find myself again)" I didn't took notice until the second time I listened... It captures perfectly how Veth realizes her journey isn't over, how this people changed her and wants to keep finding who she really is 💙 I love it.

Sam would be proud. You are talented! Brilliant with writing and giving us the arc so far in a way where we all can see the characters the way the actors want them seen. Which makes me so nervous for Caleb's song, especially after episode 106 aired. Critter Hugs for you m'lady!
I love the implication at the end, how Nott believed, hoped that turning back to a halfling will solve most of her inner conflicts. But her resurrection came and passed, but her feelings, her ideals, her passions didn't change. This Veth isn't the one who got turned into a goblin either. She's different, she's more. She wants more. And she has to figure out how to balance that, her past, her present and future. Because now she actually feels like she has one.
Gosh, those last few lines hit me real hard. Even after regaining her old form, Veth can never 100% go back to who she was before, and I’m not sure she even wants too. It’s a process of rediscovering herself after her life as “Nott the Brave” and you just captured that so perfectly in song once again. ❤️

For a long time Nott was a character I didn't really understand. Then came that river. Now she's probably my favorite, both because of the amazing backstory and the more than amazing roleplaying that Sam gifts us every Thursday. And your song perfectly represents how she has fears of herself, of being rejected, of how others (and her family) see her, how she almost drowns herself in alcohol to not feel fear ever again. How she thinks the friendship she made will fall after she tells everyone the truth. And how now she has two family, and many people that love her more than everything, and that she is herself again. So she can finally out the flask dowm... Thank you Edit: will the last one be the song of our lavander circus man? Long may he reign
Just so you know, I’ve never seen a single episode of what these songs are about, but I keep coming back for EVERY SINGLE ONE multiple times because this is just purely gifted songwriting. Incredibly powerful stuff. When the album drops I’m definitely getting it day one. Bravo
I won't tell you to watch because it's a big time sink not everyone can commit too, but I will say that the context adds so much more depth, beauty, and pain to the songs. It also allows you to realize just how clever the lyrics really are.
AMAZING job Lilli!! So glad that Sam recognized this on twitter, saying "Wow, Lilli, incredible. Your writing and voice are so honest. "i wish i knew how / to shed this poison skin" - COME ON. So good." Way to go!!
NEW SONG NEW SONG oh god I'm losing it already, Veth 😭 edit: Oh god I have legit chills. Somehow I keep thinking you can't blow me away any more than you already have, and then you drop a new song and I'm OBSESSED all over again. God. THE COMPARISONS TO CALEB. I love how we see Nott/Veth as a more comedic character due to Sam’s comedic nature, but this song just shows how tragic her backstory is and I absolutely love it. Keep doing what you’re doing Lilli 😄!
“You called me brave when before I was not” wow, so clever. Time and time again I am amazed. I just listen to this playlist on repeat because you capture the mighty nien so well... no words. The breath of styles you can do is outstanding and you capture everyone’s personality along with their story in each song. Aaaaaaah - so brilliant.
the lyrics for all of your songs have been really damn good, but this is next level. It doesn't even feel like a 5 1/2 minute song. seriously this is just beautiful and heartbreaking and so good. I had a feeling that Caleb would be last, but god his song is going to crush me, i can already tell.
You have such a wonderful skill in storytelling through song. The Mighty Nein is lucky to have such a skillfull Bard telling their stories to the world.
You must be amazing at puns bc your wordplay is SO GOOD 👏🏻👏🏻 Another brilliant song, so far my fave along with Bare Bones. And Mothers. And Seasons. And Bottom Line... Aaand Eyes Warm Eyes Wide... okey you got me yes I have been playing these songs on repeat sue me Lilli is amazing. All joked aside, I am not the first one to tell you this but I really mean it when I say that you are so talented and you just have «it». Keep doing you and you’ll do amazingly. ❤️
I'm still coming back to this video even a year later. Of all the Mighty Nein, Veth's song is still my favourite Resurrection has such a simplicity in the music. The pain in the lyrics is really something that lets me mourn alongside the character
These songs feel like canon backstory for me - each song rings so true, but ALSO makes me understand and feel even more empathy with the PCs. I know them better after hearing these songs, and I'm rooting for them even harder. It's incredible. It's not new info, per se, but Lilli's ability to analyze each story and bring into focus the core of who they are - it really is a unique ability. I'm blown away.
I immensely enjoyed how this song explored Nott through her relationship with Caleb. It really works in defining who she was and her struggle to become her original self once more.
Very beautiful Lilli. You captured the darkness, and sorrow in the heart of Veth, and also her deep capacity for love. But once again, I think this is a story that could touch many people, many women, who've lost themselves. It is a hard thing to feel worthy of love when you feel you have become monstrous, whatever the reason. "you’re covered in dirt, and i hate the water", "i found a friend after the fire now i can hide you’ll offer protection so i’ll stay until i find the way to my resurrection" beautiful lyrics, with layered meaning once again. This is a sweet nod to something we know about our beloved characters, but it could be something true for any number of people's stories. Many have sought to hide themselves in the love of another, to let them be a shield against the world, so they might stay in the shadows. I really enjoy the way you take the surface level of these characters, then come at it from underneath, or inside out. Sam portrays Veth as a jumpy, loud, strangled character, but in his performance of her, he has shown that she is a very wounded and sensitive woman, who bears a great weight inside. You slowed her right down, and drifted down the current of her grief, tapping into the gentle spirit, and powerful feelings she has inside. You made a character that is very small, feel much bigger. You manage to convey the soul of the character in a very honest way. Good insight. This might just be me, and it is no slight towards your playing, but I wish you had some accompaniment for this one, just a little. When you sing "my resurrection" it feels like something should...punctuate it somehow, like the gentle sound of your voice, should be partnered with something as powerful as the concept of resurrection. I hear...drums? Percussion at any rate, or maybe some brass. If that makes any sense. As you can tell I'm not a musician, I can just hear it then even though it's not there. The song is beautiful as is, and this is no criticism, just something that occurred to me. Very powerful, thank you for this song. Excited for whatever you create next. Take care.
I love all these stories/characters so much, but the songs would speak deeply to me even if I didn’t know the characters at all. My mind is writing harmonies and colors and I just can’t stop. Thank you for this music.
Not what I was expecting. . . I was assuming Nott/Veth’s song would be tongue in cheek. Instead this song gave me goosebumps. I love it. Thank you yet again for a bit of perfection in this world!
Like a few others have stated Nott only seemed like the comic relief character because of Sam but in reality, Nott/Veth is one of the most tragic origins out of the entire Nein. Lilli captured it perfectly and I'm not sure I'm ready for Caleb...
*sobs* so so gooood. I loved the focus on remembering her marriage and Luc and getting back to them and her complicated feelings with all of that. We all know her in the chaos crew, but she has so much more to her. 😭😭💗 so good. also just /ALL/ of the lyrics 👌👌
Heard this right after crying my way through "bright" for the first time, this is beautiful. thank you for sharing your true understanding of these characters we love.
Of all the amazing art fans have made for Critical Role, yours is my favorite. I've seen thousands beautiful illustrations of fantastic scenes that would have otherwise only existed in fans imagination, but none of it has so perfectly captured the souls of the characters - has moved me to tears - the way your music has done. You are a rare and wonderful prodigy. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with all of us.
The genius of these songs are that you could take critical role out of it and they'd still hold up. Take out the fact that this is about veth and you've still got a song about a recovering alcoholic trying to better herself for her husband and child. Genius.
Just listened to all the songs you've posted so far and they're all fantastic! The lyrics are full of meaning and so true to the characters, it's basically their theme song. Gonna have to steal that subscribe button and that shiny notification bell
This is absolutely amazing. Your songwriting and lyricism are fantastic-"you’re covered in dirt, and i hate the water/we both know it hurts to be seen" and "you tell me i’m brave, when before i was not(t)/it’s been a long time since i’ve had a family/and now i have two to take care of/to remind me when i have forgot" are my favorite parts, but the entire song is so poetic. I am absolutely blown away by this and all your other songs. Awesome job!!!
LOL right? I was going to cute/paste my favorite line from the song but then realized it was LLOOOOONNNNGGGG and why not just cut/paste the entire song. Insane. 'cause you know me now you didn’t know me then you say you love me now but you don’t remember when i was a wife, i was a mother i was alive now i’m a monster i’d do it again for my son and lover and i’ll find my way to them on the day of my resurrection
I don't understand how, and I don't want to know. I've hummed this exact tune to myself countless times in the past without lyrics and I'm so joyous to know the perfect melody that this is. thank you so much
I'm waiting for an album and all of these to be on spotify so I can listen to them for a million years and cry some more. These are such beautiful songs.
Oh my GOD. Each one is as compelling as the last in such a unique way. I'm so impressed with your writing and how you can form each song into a perfect representation of the character.
So wonderful at writing the music and performing the music, but I find myself particularly blown away at how truly insightful, empathic, and beautiful the lyrics to these songs are you've written.
I listened to all of your M9 songs in a frenzy and this one is the one I keep coming back to. Veth was my least favorite member of the Nein but this is making me feel things for her I hadn’t before. Your work is truly transcendent.
See, I've been so exited and scared for this song and it seems like my anticipation was well founded. My god this is so perfect and beautiful your lyrics never fail to astound and touch my heart and bring me to tears, and this one even more so than the others. I'm sobbing right now. This is probably my favourite song you've put out so far, it just hits on every perfect aspect of Nott/Veth's story. I've said it before and I'll say it again, thank you for these wonderful creations, it's so clear that they're made with absolute passion behind them and it really hits! Next up: watch me spontaneously combust when we get to Caleb's song...
The lyrics are always so on point and your performance and voice never disappoint. Had me in tears, Thank you again and I can't wait for the final one!
Another character embodied, and a destructive story told with so much passion and commitment. Again your storytelling is captivating. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world, you are astounishing.
Bravo. The ability to take such a broad story and condense it all into such potent lyrics is astounding. Then taking those words and making us feel them is a whole new level of amazing.
Lilli, every week you astound me; aside from being great musically, you’re also such a talented lyricist. This is so powerfully evocative and mournful. Oh my gosh I love it.
You have such a beautiful knack for songwriting, and all of these never failed to give me joy listning to them Not only do their songs fit them amazingly, but the tunes does as well and are just skksmjsjajajnshsjdjakkajd A+ story telling through song Also, you would make an amazing bard! xD
You portray veth so well... Sam reigel has a way of making characters who blend into the background while being at the forefront of attention, characters who seem so simple but are so complex and somehow you captured veth perfectly.
Bravo Lilli! Your streak of insightful lyric writing continues, as well as taking the soft tones of Veth and twining that into your fingertips. Well played.
It's somehow the happiness in your voice for 'wife' and 'mother' that's making me tear up, rather than the sad parts of her story. I love Veth and I love this song for her.
Agreed. Apparently Lilli when to performing arts and/or acting school or something like that. I think about that watching her perform - she knows how to deliver a lot of emotion with her face and how she pronounces specific words. It's subtle but very powerful.
You ARE a TRUE ARTIST. Your voice is stuning and leads us throug a hole journey, your fingers set the pace and the places' landscape. You tell hole stories with each peace of your art... The way you keep playing after a short end on this song show how endings are always a start of a new beginning. These songs not only thrill us that know these stories but they are also able to tell the stories for everyone and let them feel it throug their own veil. BEAUTIFUL!!!
Bro its the first time ive felt like this, but all of your song genuingly have made me spend 4 months to make animatics due to how fucking good your songs are!!!!

third! I've never clicked on a video so fast in my life! a fantastic song from my favorite CR content creator for my favorite CR character, what more could I ask for today
It's so easy to focus on how funny Nott/veth is as a character, but you've really captured the complexity and tragedy behind here, this is incredible to listen to
Beautiful, this made me genuinely cry. I love the journey through different emotions that you also embody in your performance, and the end especially hit me. Veth waiting to feel alright after getting her body back, but realizing she still has conflict inside her... Oof my heart
Veth's story in a song. You did her so much justice. You led us beautifully and gently through her story. Your voice is hauntingly beautiful in the best possible way. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. ALSO! "I found a friend after the fire." Caleb! Caleb!!! What a beautiful lyric, what a way to write that!
Alright. Wow. Despite anticipating the rhyme, I still brought a hand to my mouth and choked on a gasp on the line “I was a wife/ I was a mother.” And the way it ends, after a moment of doubt, with no resolution? Genius. Brilliant. As hard as it is to compare this growing album of character songs, this might just be my new favorite. Spectacular.
Oh man I had to collect myself after this..... The amount of tears I've shed at this perfect portrayal of Veth's life. The little inflections you add reflect her hidden beauty. This is perfection.

edit 2: "You tell me I'm brave but before I was not." YOUR MIIIND. I'm probably going to be losing it for the rest of the night so I'm sorry for the edits lmao

this body i’m in

you’ve shown me your shame
G D
now i need you to help me wash mine clean
[Chorus]
Am C
'cause you know me now
G D
you didn’t know me then
Am C
you say you love me now
G D
but you don’t remember when
Am C
i was a wife, i was a mother
G
i was alive
D
now i’m a monster
Am C
i’d do it again for my son and lover
G D
and i’ll find my way to them
on the day of my resurrection
[Istrumental]
Am C G D

Am C
you all know my name
G D
well, both that i’ve told you

it’s been a long time since i’ve had a family
Am C
and now i have two to take care of

to remind me when i have forgot
[Chorus]
Am C
that you know me now
G D
and still you call me a friend
Am C
you made me a vow

then in the clay we find an answer
G D
i was a drunk, i was a monster

again i’m a mother
G D
and i feel myself again
D
(i will feel myself again)
D
(I will find myself again)
[Istrumental]
Am C G D
OHHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUU
I love how we see Nott/Veth as a more comedic character due to Sam’s comedic nature, but this song just shows how tragic her backstory is and I absolutely love it. Keep doing what you’re doing Lilli 😄!
“You called me brave when before I was not” wow, so clever. Time and time again I am amazed. I just listen to this playlist on repeat because you capture the mighty nien so well... no words. The breath of styles you can do is outstanding and you capture everyone’s personality along with their story in each song. Aaaaaaah - so brilliant.
"I will feel myself again...I will find myself again"
This gave me such heartache why the hell, why the uncertainty????? Aaaaaaaaaaaa
the lyrics for all of your songs have been really damn good, but this is next level. It doesn't even feel like a 5 1/2 minute song. seriously this is just beautiful and heartbreaking and so good. I had a feeling that Caleb would be last, but god his song is going to crush me, i can already tell.
Achloryn i only realised this song was nearly six minutes long when i read your comment
You have such a wonderful skill in storytelling through song. The Mighty Nein is lucky to have such a skillfull Bard telling their stories to the world.
I have an unhealthy obsession with all of your songs. I only discovered them last Friday and I can't stop listening to them.
You must be amazing at puns bc your wordplay is SO GOOD 👏🏻👏🏻
Another brilliant song, so far my fave along with Bare Bones.
Of all the Mighty Nein, Veth's song is still my favourite
Resurrection has such a simplicity in the music. The pain in the lyrics is really something that lets me mourn alongside the character
Literally every single song is perfection. Every single song. How is this possible?
"you’re covered in dirt, and i hate the water", "i found a friend after the fire
now i can hide you’ll offer protection so i’ll stay until i find the way to my resurrection" beautiful lyrics, with layered meaning once again.
You've made everyone character's story so heartfelt and I'm scared to see what you do with Caleb
How she makes these so quick blows my mind. Seriously talented
In a trying time of ugliness and fear you have created something truly beautiful. Thank you
*sobs* so so gooood. I loved the focus on remembering her marriage and Luc and getting back to them and her complicated feelings with all of that. We all know her in the chaos crew, but she has so much more to her. 😭😭💗 so good. also just /ALL/ of the lyrics 👌👌
Does CR know about these?? It is vital that they know about these!!!
I would think so. I actually found Lilli when she posted the Jester song on Twitter and Laura saw it and was all amazed.
Sam has already replied to the tweet of this song. They all love these songs.
I am SO excited for Caleb's
Agreed! I can’t wait to see what tone it will be in also.
I kind of hope she doesn't need for Mollymauk
Genius.
Guardian Martial Media agreed!
Insane.
'cause you know me now
you didn’t know me then
you say you love me now
but you don’t remember when
i was a wife, i was a mother
i was alive
now i’m a monster
i’d do it again for my son and lover
and i’ll find my way to them
on the day of my resurrection
Whenever i need to feel something is just come and listen to these. Incredible every single time. I'll go cry now, thanks.
The end of this song captures veths current dilemma so well I just can't even it's like so good ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I hope they bring you in on the animated series. Your songs are beautiful.
Your voice gives me chills. I love all your songs. Just beautiful.
Just when I thought I couldn't be more emotionally involved in the story...
“You tell me I’m brave when before I was Not(t).” SERIOUSLY. I love your writing!
I can't believe how densely stacked your songs are with utterly profound lyrics.
I can't even pick a favourite part, it's all so fucking good!
Lilli, every week you astound me; aside from being great musically, you’re also such a talented lyricist. This is so powerfully evocative and mournful. Oh my gosh I love it.
You have such a beautiful knack for songwriting, and all of these never failed to give me joy listning to them
Not only do their songs fit them amazingly, but the tunes does as well and are just skksmjsjajajnshsjdjakkajd
A+ story telling through song
Also, you would make an amazing bard!
It's subtle but very powerful.
you're serving laura bailey vibes and making me cry and i just gotta say. thank you, keep being awesome :)
Veth is probably my favorite character of C2. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
i watch these whenever i need to get a healthy cry out
You ARE a TRUE ARTIST.
Santii :D please! Will you make animators to these songs? They tell such a story they would shine with animatics.
I know the cast just came out with new character music playlists, but I swear they need to do another and just have these songs on there. You nail it every time. Incredible.
How do you come up with these? What is your writing process? What is your day job? So many questions.
Eriksen Ravey answers i can provide: 1. i don’t know! 2. i don’t know!! 3. most recently, a gardener! (i wish i could tell you more, but i barely know what’s going on as i’m writing ☺️)
@@lillifurfaro9039 no worries. I am one of those annoying instagram poets so I share the sentiment of being confused by your own process. Although, my poems are not nearly as refined as your songs. (not to be annoying, but if you ever want to check my poetry out look up @eravey_poetry on insta).
third! I've never clicked on a video so fast in my life! a fantastic song from my favorite CR content creator for my favorite CR character, what more could I ask for today
I seriously can't stop listening to this one. I love all the others, you've got incredible talent, but this one just hits different. It hurts so good.
Your vocals are especially amazing in this one 💟
It's so easy to focus on how funny Nott/veth is as a character, but you've really captured the complexity and tragedy behind here, this is incredible to listen to
I am literally in tears, this is so hauntingly beautiful and sad.
Extreme lullabye vibes with the down-up-up rhythm, like putting your past self to sleep
You so perfectly encapsulate and distill each story in to beautiful songs. You are awesome.
I loved the:
"You told me I was brave, when I was not(t)."
Alright.
It's always the warm smile in her voice when she says, "I was a wife, I was a mother, I was alive..." that breaks me into tears. Every daggum time.
Disappointed that I have but one up-vote to give. This song is a masterpiece.
Hi. Hello. You’ve broken my heart with each of these songs, and I wanted you to know how deeply you have made my day. Thank you, just thank you
Oh man I had to collect myself after this..... The amount of tears I've shed at this perfect portrayal of Veth's life. The little inflections you add reflect her hidden beauty. This is perfection.
