Yes they played such brilliant music to ears to our hearts, North Sea was a pleasant surprise after all the other offshore stations closed. And with global reach anywhere I was in the world I could tune in crystal clear to RNIs world service. When you have something this powerful the authorities go like the clappers to close down.
The Labour Government didn't want to see a commercial station being successful at no cost to the public, and the jamming ordered by that pillar of honesty John Stonehouse was farcical. He claimed that the jamming was in agreement with other countries on the same frequency yet within minutes of RNI using a brand new frequency they were being jammed again! That was a quick agreement! Perhaps they can do a quick agreement over Brexit in the same time! lol
I put the radio on, nothing, in school they were asking the teachers where has radio Caroline gone. no music radio can only be evil doing it, unable to pick up radio 1 on 247 up here in the north, I was devastated. My father said I have got a big ship for you, keep watching the news and then it came on the most powerful pop ship ever with global reach, and the evil that thinks that it is good, jammed, bombed, impounded. My father who just happens to be God.
Father can I have a radio ship to bring music back into Lancaster. I have got a big ship for you my son just keep watching the news. For months I am glued to the news, then on this night I came in & there it was staring me right in the face my fathers pop ship. I rushed upstairs to my bedroom & tuned in to RNI test broadcasts playing my sweet lord by George Harrison, I was over the moon, can I go on board the ship father. Yes my son.
The desire for commercial radio intrigues me. It seems to me, having been born much later, that wanting commercials on radio is kind of bizarre as they're extremely annoying :P. But I'm sure that's not exactly what this fight was about - can anyone explain the context to me as to why it was so important for them that commercials were brought in to Europe? I feel I'm probably missing something, thanks :)
Legal commercial stations can be rather boring. The pirates were never that. And who wants to listen only to state sanctioned radio? Only zombies, surely.
Such a shame that the Mebo 2 could not have been preserved instead of being bombed and sunk for target practice by the Libyan military....I think Colonel Gaddaffi should get a slap ;)
I remember listening to this brilliant station. Wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing.

RNI was my favourite at the time.

Commercial as an alternative to state. Also - driven by “grass roots” enthusiasts, not idiots and dictators lacking any such passion.
Radio 1 wasn’t on in the evening, and Luxembourg at times was too fluffy. RNI was a breath of fresh air. So the Gov. stifled it.
@mikeluxy
Well, he's getting more than a slap nowadays.
Pity it won't bring back the Mebo 2 nor free radio....
