Didn't know it was legal to fly the spinnaker without using the pole. The crew is holding the sheet/guy like a strut and that would disqualify him just like someone using a boathook to pole out a genoa.

The rules treat those two situations differently. A boathook holding a sail is an outrigger, the use of which is specifically banned in RRS 50.3. A crewperson holding a sheet or guy is permitted since they aren't an outrigger according to the definition within the rules.

there is no rule forcing the boat to use a Spi pole that I know of.

Why isn't this on the WMRT channel? Put some commentary over it and it's the next classic video

Lots of interesting stuff going on there. This looks like a race to the finish line with Berntsson keeping Weis pushed out prior to gybing over to finish for the win. What rules apply here?

The three quick gybes performed by Berntsson positioned him to blanket Weis's air. Berntsson then used his speed advantage to slide in to leeward of Weis. When Berntsson establishes the overlap he gains right of way (RRS 11) and can prevent Weis from gybing to the finish.

There are a couple of key issues:1) the Swedes not using the spi pole. That enabled them to set and do the quick gybes keeping the spi driving better allowing them a tiny advantage which they used to get to leeward. 2) The US boat HAS to protect the left to allow them the ability to gybe onto starboard when they want. Once the Swedes get to leeward on starboard the US boat is basically screwed as they have nowhere to go; they can't gybe as the Swedes are on starboard and have to keep clear as windward boat. I would say 2 screw-ups on the US boat plus clever boat handling and and taking the opportunity when presented to them by the Swedes. I think that a competently sailed US boat would have won that.

The drone does not have a microphone on board, and adding audio in post production takes too much time. Priority is to get the footage posted as quickly as possible. Feel free to put on your own background music while watching!

@@lbycsailing Haha, I get it. actually I was not really looking for music more like hearing the guns or seeing the flag sequence or even a timer countdown to the starts in the corner.

The American boat badly managed the spinnaker, pole too high and too loose the sheet, but the Swedish one didn't use the pole..

This is the first time I've seen someone in a race not applying a pole to the chute downwind. I kinda thought that was against the rules but I guess it isn't. A little easier to get away with on a boat that size, I must admit.
