Wonderful interview - Nigella shared so much wisdom and love the interviewer and his questions. well done all around. thank you so much for sharing. my favourite interview I have seen
Nigella is spot on when she says that cooking is about puttiing things in a pan and taking them out of the pan. I left the culinary world because so much of it was about pretending it all was so much more than flour, sugar, and butter. Acknowleging that it IS just flour, sugar, and butter is the first step to enjoying cooking and having others enjoy it with you.
Wow !! Not only do I like her style of cooking. And have tried some of her recipes. But she is so well educated, creative, and knowledgeable person in the "food industry ". She is so very easy on the eyes. I could listen to her accent all day. I have several of her cookbooks, and highly recommend them. V
I have a great deal of respect for this girl. She is the best example of bravery. It isn't being fearless; it is being afraid, but doing what you have to do anyway.
sarah lilith Bravery comes in many forms. For a woman, in my experience, the thing they treasure more than anything else, is the ability to control their privacy. She totally capitulates this for the good of her vision. She breaks all the rules of a "healthy diet", & has admitted that she is by no means a chef, but merely an intruder in this field, but she still does it anyway. There aren't any other people doing what she is.. for a good reason.
Nicely done, Nigella. I've seen a number of Nigella of interviews where a pseudo-smart, tough-talking interviewer, basking in the vain glory of their social media following, tries to out-Nigella Nigella and fail miserably.
The more talented and intelligent and incredibly capable someone is often the more they self depricate, riddled with doubt and much more able to anylise and be aware of any self imperfections or limitations. Those people who are super confident, fearless and super sure are the ones we need to really need to question and worry about.
@chrismail No, if she was there would be no ambiguity. Nigella remains engaged in the conversation and from previous comments she has made likes to be challenged. She's an Oxford graduate, super intelligent, and would have made mincemeat of him (pardon the pun) had she not wanted to be there, also note 42-43mns as the interview ends. I take her at her word: she treated him like a younger sibling, talking across him at times and always engaged.
Nigella´s sincere, self-deprecating perspective is such a welcome departure from so many megalomaniacs who are in the public eye. I suppose I´m used to seeing interviews with actors and artists, who I admit sometimes need to be egocentric to succeed in the biz; either way, I am fully enamored with Nigella´s down-to-earth conversational style.
I didn’t find Jian rude whatsoever...in fact to me he seems to be hitting on her...(not thst I blame him ) He’s complimentary ...engaging....and gracious . I do enjoy listening to both of them...in my opinion one of her best interviewers. She’s an incredible intelligent...graceful...honest...and beautiful human being. I could listen to her all day...and often do ❤️🙏🏽❤️
why is the guy attacking her basic approach towards understanding her world? isn't it the whole point hearing how this one woman has lived and built a life/career through food. he is aggressively trying to find holes in the things she say. at several points, even her body language changes. arms up to her hair, or hands to her throat. 10:39
This is brilliant- the sharp, brainy, articulate Nigella behind the public image. I'd be even happier to sit down and really talk to this woman, than eat the woman on TV's food.
I think she surprised Jian....and I think he loved it. Such an interesting meeting of the minds. So much more to Nigella than meets the eye. Was cool to see a different side of her and I love that Jian didn't shy away from her "celebrity" status.
iknoemanuelle She is a brainy woman. She was a journalist for a serious newspaper for many years before she branched out into cooking, which I could never understand. She is wasting her intellectual talents, IMO.
Easy there Jian. I just watched some of her videos and while 'she' distracted from the food a bit, it also made me want to find out about the dishes more than I ever would. Don't need to be so challenging toward her...
I feel a duty to make sure all in my world are aware of her as otherwise they are missing out:) Also, wow, he reveals a lot when he says “the lack of flirting wasn’t just for me” as if he was expecting it from her.
I wanted to know who this interviewer was,so I googled him... & read about ALL the charges that He's just been brought up on..... Maybe that is why he was so rude with Nigella... Check out his Wikipedia Biography.......
Justice William Hopkins stated “that the inconsistency and outright deception of the witness’ testimony had irreparably weekend the prosecutions case. “
Never seen Nigella quite like this which is a testament to her endless charm and the interviewer who is very good at creating a rapport with her. Nigella is very eloquent which sometimes masks a sort of fluttery nervousness here and though she's made somewhat vulnerable by this interview, I'm still absolutely listening to every syllable intently. And Jian, my goodness. He's ridiculously, heinously sexual to me right now.
whatever ppl think about her or her food i just love watching her show. not sure i love her recipes or personality its just fun o watch! and im a girl ;)
She is brilliant but ist clear she had a terrible cold this deay as shown by the redness around her nose and the HUGE STACK OF TISSUES shown at 36.17.....bless her, she is lovely, honest and very beautiful.
Recently I have bought Anna del Conte's two books, the author that NL hails as her authority on Italian food and I am actually shocked at how much NL took (stole?) from those books for example: Carrot cake, pasta with walnut sauce, anchovy sauce for vegetables, chicken alla cacciatore, ricotta pancakes, pasta with mushrooms and so on.
He was obviously attracted to her ( can you blame him?) and was a little deflated that she wasn’t interested in flirting with him. Also, as an older woman I can relate to her comments about aging. Of course, one misses the firm thighs, but realistically that’s life!
Pertinent here is hardly any "celebrity" chefs cook at all, for anyone. They set up a chain of restaurants then vanish waiting for the cash to roll in, maybe making a single appearance at opening. Hong Kong is littered with this crap franchise celebrity chef offering as are most major cities. To me this not cooking or anything to be celebrated. Expensive mostly frozen paint by numbers meals which in fact taste just like that. Time chefs were back in the kitchen sleeves rolled up where they belong in my opinion because these are the only places to eat out. Luckily these are also the majority of restaurants outside the mainstream which are still a joy of discovery but not in places like the US, UK. Cookie cutter meals are boring for everyone including the chef, most like to play with menus ingredients and let themselves and customers be inspired. The full negative impact of Michelin star ratings is a chef utterly neurotic about exactly the right way to do a dish, even the simplest thing. This kills innovation and passion. When a chef believes the ace up his sleeve is still a beef wellington twenty, thirty years down the line you know there's a problem.
He is a good interviewer - he did a wonderful one with Leonard Cohen (on YT) - and knows how to draw people out and put them at ease, though he is always a bit stiff at first. As for what NL said about having run away to the circus, that is exactly what I have always felt about her; she has a good intellect which is going to waste with all this cookery stuff.
A good interviewer? Anything but. I found him unduly aggressive and condescending - then snotty that she wasn't flirting with him. It's no wonder that he's been brought down by women.
+Anastasia Beaverhausen Probably your view of a good interviwer is not the same as his. I'm sure the interviwer didn't want to make her at easy. He wanted to know something and he got it from her. He also wanted to provoque her to show intelectually her value and she did so. At then end he feels satisfected, as you see, because even tho he may not agree on what they talked about, she used intelectual capacity to interpretate her actions through her story. If you think like that, he was a great interviewer. However if you think you shouldn't put people or celebrities on some kind of stern questioning, you are right, he was not a "good person" or "good interviewer". But I must say that I admire her on been respectful on his questioning. She acted like an older sibiling, trying to explain to a younger person but with respect as in the same level.
Yes it was very strange, wasn't it? Where I come from you at least try to make eye contact with the person you're interviewing... way to say "you're a commodity, not a person"... eek.
I mean, at one point she literally says "what do you think cooking is? I put it in a pan and took it out of a pan." She makes clear that there's no mystique to it.
I think shes quite awkward, Shes constantly being overtly modest about her sucess even though she knows shes doen well. I mean really theres nothing wrong in saying htat youve done well, after denying it a few times ofcourse! Also she should stop being so strange in her responses shes constantly disagree with jian/ agreeing with him after disagreeing!
I'm sorry but her face looks strangely younger now than when she was 40, though in a swollen-up way, which is most probably the effect of botox. I would prefer Nigella to have more wrinkles but a more natural look.
it's always weird when you look at her and listen to her talk at the same time. thanks to her PS she looks like 30, but she talks like my 50something mom. I love her tv shows, but I think she's a little arrogant.
Wonderful interview - Nigella shared so much wisdom and love the interviewer and his questions. well done all around. thank you so much for sharing. my favourite interview I have seen

therealKINDLE In what respect? Her career or her life? or both?
sarah lilith
Its hard to distinguish the two. Considering that she let the world in to her home & her passions became her career.
But why do you call it bravery though? Not saying I disagree.Just curious.
sarah lilith

the food, and the tv show and the cook celebrity, but the most stunning feature of nigella lawson is the stunning beauty. she is absolutely nigellic.
@chrismail

The interviewer is intense, yes. But I do like how he digs deeper into Nigella and goes beyond "what is your favourite kitchen gadget"...
Love her mind and words.
Nigella is a food anthropologist. As a Brazilian I understand her. Food is the religion for Brazilians. Food is divine!
Love that she put the interviewer in his place, right off the hop, about “the facts”., which was presumptuous of him to proclaim in the first place.

I’ve been a vegetarian since age 15. I have , and greatly enjoy watching Nigella even fondle and cook pork ! She is brilliant ! Great interview...

+Miriam Ni Fhathaigh going back and watching his other interviews you can tell he thinks he's better than most
This is brilliant- the sharp, brainy, articulate Nigella behind the public image. I'd be even happier to sit down and really talk to this woman, than eat the woman on TV's food.

Great presenter, and an articulate guest..eh? This woman has a diamond mouth, not only her palate but also her words!

+p123 yawn, another one saying cooking has nothing to do with intellect
chrismail Never heard that one before. I said she was wasting her talents, not that cooking required no intellect.
+p123 You said she was wasting her intellectual talents, thus assuming cooking has nothing to do with intellect.
chrismail
Point taken, but honestly it was an unintended implication. :(
fascinating interview of human interaction. Very dynamic personalities. thank you

Nigella Lawson is a goddess and she knows it
Good interview. As for the negative commenters....lets see if you look/looked this good at her age.
I think the interviewer is crap.He even pointed out that she interrupted him 10 minutes after it happened which was annoying. She looked awkward then.
So beautiful, cant stop to look her, i not listen, just looking her
this interviewer doesn’t know who he is talking to, she is holding this space for him , a role model for us all really
Rubbish.. is he intelligent and well briefed, challenging and funny. Nigella obviously enjoyed it.
ouh God ! I wish i got a woman like Nigella :'(

Was it just me, or did the interviewer come off as a bit rude towards Nigella?
i think those recipes are part of the italian cooking repertoire in the first place and not strictly anna del conte's.
Unlike the video not for Nigella but for the interviewer for being a bully
She has a delicious Mediterranean beauty now that did now show in her younger, slenderer days.
astraiiia She is Jewish.
whats up with her face at the end? Do you think she was happy/ confident during the interview?
Jian sounds like a male Terry Gross. There's just something about that cool, penetrating NPR aesthetic...
