A masterpiece, not merely of a clock but of ordering the instructional aspect of the construction, cinematic quality and the cheerful friendly voice of our guide and teacher. What a terrific series and why not sell it or license it to a public television channel? I hope you have given thought to that avenue of distribution and if not that you consider it. I'm not saying it is *that* good. I am saying it is several rungs up on the offerings available right now in the public domain.
His care and perfectionist streak extend to the videos themselves, and I love that. He's not only an amazing clock maker (in his spare time!), but the editing and narration are terrific.
Stephen Thompson I am always amazed how much stock he leaves behind to file it down by hand! I would always try to remove as much in one go and thereby risk ruining it.

Next time, to really go that "extra mile", I expect you to mine the copper and zinc and smelt it from the raw ore to make your brass from... Excellent work, and bitter sweet to see it all come to an end, it was entertaining all the while.
You can find TH-cam channels for probably everything he did here really, at least the basic knowledge, but watching them means I'm not watching Clickspring's amazing video quality production. Also, he made his own tools and things like screws completely from scratch. Wouldn't surprise me to much to see him mine his own metal. lol
Nobody Uknow that is not really all that entertaining it would be crushing each ore putting it in a crucible heating it scooping dross then making shot of copper and zinc aluminum by pouring each into water then measuring out the right combination of the 2-3 metals putting them in a crucible and melting them then pouring that in a mold.
Dagg That's what I asked for! Well, actually a 12 hour video that we can loop. I figure plenty of people would just loop it. I can even see a few people making a dedicated device out of an old phone or something to display that video in their home, the closest most of us could ever get to having such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and art.
There is only few of him in entire world; yet the good news is thousands and millions of people can live fantastic life with much less skills. If you can secure a seat among those millions, you are a winner. Are you winner ?
I would strongly recommend that you add a part 24: making a glass case for the skeleton clock. If ever there was an exhibition quality clock, this is it, and the beautiful polish should not suffer from dust. I do not remember how ME judges clocks, but this one I would personally rate prize-winning. Comes the question of what shape of case. Tradition would demand a bell-shaped case. Kind of difficult to machine glass :), but they are commercially available at least in the UK.
Mrs Clickspring purchased a beautiful cabinet for it a few months ago - mahogany with glass sides, perfectly airtight and safe. Also plenty of room in it for a few more projects... Cheers mate :)
Frosty. They're called finger cots. They're used in many industries, and they are far more comfortable than full gloves that fill with sweat when used for long periods. But I think their main use is as a prop in acts of sexual harassment.
The finished product is beyond gorgeous, a true masterpiece. I have to say I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end, not once did I feel bored or otherwise distracted. Your work ethic is amazing and your attention to detail is above meticulous, a perfectionist would blush with envy. amazing seeing the clock completed! after the final polishing it almost looks like a 3D render. Just wondering, wont the screwdrivers mess up the blued finish on the screws?
kay486 Thats because he does not have any chamfers. Only 90 degree angles. Thats what a lot of people forget in renderings and make them look artificial.

I'm drawn to the attention to detail and the imagination and consideration taken with every facet of Woody's final appearance. Man that looks stunning, I would absolutely love to make something like that for my mother. She has a bunch of the only glass encased clocks that display the gears and mechanisms so she would absolutely love that.

You not only have an outstanding amount of knowledge skill and some of the most profound finesse I’ve ever seen. But the amount of craftsmanship is on a level that in my opinion most will never reach or achieve. Also you have one of the most entertaining channels on TH-cam. I came across your videos through a channel I watch. And the first video I watch was the one when you made the play card press. Which also was mind blowing I’d never seen anything like that and was truly blown away by the sheer enjoyment and entertainment of the video. And it also was a learning point in my life for me. Funny how if you make a CGI model if this it's actually easier to make something as flawless as this, and to make it look realistic you have put some defects on the surface, some tool marks and all that.
ElecDiy Thats because he has almost to chamfers. Those are often missing in CAD models and therefore also missing in renderings. Allmost all objects in reality have chamfers apart from knifes and maybe crystals. Thats why humans think chamfer less objects look odd. -somebody that knows how to do renderings :
Being straight polished brass - won't this tarnish up pretty quick? I can't imagine tearing this down every so often to do the cleaning - yikes... Could it be coated with lacquer or something to prevent that?
No words for how amazing the clock turned out, but just the winder left me amazed at your skill and passion for this build and the attention to detail.
MAG. NIF. I. CENT. I'd store this masterwork in a clean room with a non-oxidizing atmosphere. I watched the entire series while abed with the flu. I had to keep reminding myself that this precision and these breathtaking surface finishes are happening on TINY parts viewed under uncommon magnification. Even the application of Dykem is an art form here. Love the spectacularly sharp video and the golden lighting that makes the brass glow like treasure.

Hey Coxy - the traditional approach is to bring all surfaces to a very high polish and then let a beautiful patina develop over the subsequent decades. If fingerprints are avoided during assembly, it will be as uniform as the finish you see in the video, but with a richer gold/bronze color. A vintage patina is one of the most prized aspects of a clock from a collectors point of view, it is quite literally a record of the clocks journey up to that point in time. Later polishing is avoided at all cost, lest it remove that story and devalue the clock. Thanks for the kind words mate :)

Just found this and having worked in and around machine shops for many years, I am in awe by the shear quality of your workmanship. Wonderfully made! I agree with Mr. Rivero about fabricating some type of glass case for the protection and display of your inspiring clock creation!
Hey Keld, Mrs Clickspring purchased a beautiful mahogany cabinet for it. It has glass sides, and a mirror back so the mechanism is visible from all sides. Its all airtight so its dust free, and a bonus is that there's quite a bit more room for more projects :)
I have watched this entire series for at least two times. Some episodes five times. Again. No words to describe how amazed I am. I almost cried when you said "this is it". I can imagine your satisfaction with such marvelous piece of art.

Keeping hand oils off the brass is essential to ensure a pristine patina over the next few decades. Any contact at all will show up within 24 hrs as an obvious mark, and ruin the effect. Great to have you watching mate :)

Wow. You bring a fellow craftsman to the brink of tears. How was all this afforded? Surely it's not just spare time and days off work. Who payed the $30k+ to get this thing commissioned? I'd love to hear you kept this clock to cherish into old age. But with the hundred grand in shop equipment, several grand in materials and supplies, six months + in labor, and acute attention to fine detail at every step, is that even possible? How did you manage to afford all of this, including your time?! I didn't think this was even possible anymore, after the industrial revolution. You are a true craftsman. I aspire to be an apprentice to someone of your level of skill, one day, if such a person even still exists. Bravo.
Exactly!!!! I would love to find someone like this to take me under their wing so to speak. People, and places, that put this much time and work into what they do, is definitely a thing of the past!!! I would love to work in an old machine shop/metal shop!! Cincinnati Ohio use to be littered with them, and use to be the Mecca for machine shop tools and equipment. I dont think they are any more.
It's funny you mentioned 30k+. I was just noticing the final video in the playlist that says it's 1000 hours of work in a 12 minute video. With this level of skill and attention to detail, I would expect an absolute minimum of $30/hr which is honestly almost insultingly low. I could never afford something like this because this clock has to be in the tens of thousands in terms of value. Completely hand made pieces of art go for insanely high prices (for good reason) and this level of craftsmanship seems to be very rare these days.
Over the past couple of weeks I've watched this series from start to finish, and I've never seen anything like it. The vast majority of the machine tools I use are very affordable, hobby grade equipment. The Sherline for example is a $600 lathe and would be a great starting point around which to build a home machine shop. Start there and accumulate over time as the finances allow. Let the projects that interest you guide your subsequent power tool purchases, and wherever possible avoid buying a tool that you could make yourself.
Amazing workmanship. I always forget in this series just how small some of the parts are because the shot is so up close and they just look so perfect! The final assembly was very satisfying to watch, a labor of love for sure. :)
Came here as a recommendation from TH-cam. Wasn't disappointed and binge watched this clock making series from episode 1 to the end. Absolutely stunning the work, and craftsmanship of this clock. Also the video editing and narration was spot on. This sets the bar for making a video series on TH-cam when it comes to building something.
I've been a toolmaker for 45 years now, but nothing compares to the work and craftsmanship that you present in these videos. I'm totally amazed at the attention to the tiniest detail, and the absolutely stunning work. You have way more patience than I'll ever have, and it shows.I would also like to commend you on the quality of your video work as well. The super sharp close ups, the editing, narration and post production is second to none. If there were academy awards for TH-cam videos, you have my nomination, sir.Stunning, just stunning.
I'm a toolmaker too and this attention to detail is not possible in our workplace,tight deadlines and only make what the engineering drawing requires,nothing more.Time is money in the commercial toolmaking sector but for a hobby craftsman it's about quality not quantity.
I did that once. I also forgot to wind the weights back up once and the weights fell to the floor my grandfather was pissed that I broke his Grandfather Clock. 😡
I have become a Clickspringholic... After seeing your video, I decided to make something like you do since I had a lathe from long ago but I never dig deep into it. Got plan, studying, and researching. I found clock / music box / Orrery (incl. Antikythera) are the same thing, so I decided my next plan will be Antikythera IF I can finish my clock well and couple step BEFORE you. When I saw your next project is Antikythera I'm really SCHOCKED!!! I think I'd better go for music box 'cos my work can never better than yours. :(Keep working. Stephen Thompson I am always amazed how much stock he leaves behind to file it down by hand! I would always try to remove as much in one go and thereby risk ruining it.

You can find TH-cam channels for probably everything he did here really, at least the basic knowledge, but watching them means I'm not watching Clickspring's amazing video quality production.
Also, he made his own tools and things like screws completely from scratch. Wouldn't surprise me to much to see him mine his own metal. lol
Nobody Uknow that is not really all that entertaining it would be crushing each ore putting it in a crucible heating it scooping dross then making shot of copper and zinc aluminum by pouring each into water then measuring out the right combination of the 2-3 metals putting them in a crucible and melting them then pouring that in a mold.

Dagg That's what I asked for! Well, actually a 12 hour video that we can loop. I figure plenty of people would just loop it. I can even see a few people making a dedicated device out of an old phone or something to display that video in their home, the closest most of us could ever get to having such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and art.

There is only few of him in entire world; yet the good news is thousands and millions of people can live fantastic life with much less skills. If you can secure a seat among those millions, you are a winner. Are you winner ?
I would strongly recommend that you add a part 24: making a glass case for the skeleton clock. If ever there was an exhibition quality clock, this is it, and the beautiful polish should not suffer from dust. I do not remember how ME judges clocks, but this one I would personally rate prize-winning. Comes the question of what shape of case. Tradition would demand a bell-shaped case. Kind of difficult to machine glass :), but they are commercially available at least in the UK.
Mrs Clickspring purchased a beautiful cabinet for it a few months ago - mahogany with glass sides, perfectly airtight and safe. Also plenty of room in it for a few more projects... Cheers mate :)

Frosty. They're called finger cots. They're used in many industries, and they are far more comfortable than full gloves that fill with sweat when used for long periods.
But I think their main use is as a prop in acts of sexual harassment.

kay486 Thats because he does not have any chamfers. Only 90 degree angles. Thats what a lot of people forget in renderings and make them look artificial.

Man that looks stunning, I would absolutely love to make something like that for my mother. She has a bunch of the only glass encased clocks that display the gears and mechanisms so she would absolutely love that.
One of the things I absolutely enjoy about your videos is the Quality and camera angles of each frame. You not only have an outstanding amount of knowledge skill and some of the most profound finesse I’ve ever seen. But the amount of craftsmanship is on a level that in my opinion most will never reach or achieve. Also you have one of the most entertaining channels on TH-cam. I came across your videos through a channel I watch. And the first video I watch was the one when you made the play card press. Funny how if you make a CGI model if this it's actually easier to make something as flawless as this, and to make it look realistic you have put some defects on the surface, some tool marks and all that.
ElecDiy Thats because he has almost to chamfers. Those are often missing in CAD models and therefore also missing in renderings. Allmost all objects in reality have chamfers apart from knifes and maybe crystals. Thats why humans think chamfer less objects look odd. -somebody that knows how to do renderings :
Being straight polished brass - won't this tarnish up pretty quick? I can't imagine tearing this down every so often to do the cleaning - yikes... Could it be coated with lacquer or something to prevent that?
I rewatched his bezel video and there he used a tiny amount of varnish.

I watched the entire series while abed with the flu. I had to keep reminding myself that this precision and these breathtaking surface finishes are happening on TINY parts viewed under uncommon magnification. Even the application of Dykem is an art form here.
Love the spectacularly sharp video and the golden lighting that makes the brass glow like treasure.

Hey Coxy - the traditional approach is to bring all surfaces to a very high polish and then let a beautiful patina develop over the subsequent decades. If fingerprints are avoided during assembly, it will be as uniform as the finish you see in the video, but with a richer gold/bronze color. A vintage patina is one of the most prized aspects of a clock from a collectors point of view, it is quite literally a record of the clocks journey up to that point in time. Later polishing is avoided at all cost, lest it remove that story and devalue the clock. Thanks for the kind words mate :)

Hey Keld, Mrs Clickspring purchased a beautiful mahogany cabinet for it. It has glass sides, and a mirror back so the mechanism is visible from all sides. Its all airtight so its dust free, and a bonus is that there's quite a bit more room for more projects :)

I thought the finger cots were a bit overkill, but considering you've spent the last two years making it, there is no such thing as overkill. Beautiful piece, and it's been a wonderful time watching you make this from start to finish.
Keeping hand oils off the brass is essential to ensure a pristine patina over the next few decades. Any contact at all will show up within 24 hrs as an obvious mark, and ruin the effect. Great to have you watching mate :)
Tell me about it, I handled copper tubing while assembling a primary coil and it's hideous now.

Wow. You bring a fellow craftsman to the brink of tears. How was all this afforded? Surely it's not just spare time and days off work. Who payed the $30k+ to get this thing commissioned? I'd love to hear you kept this clock to cherish into old age. But with the hundred grand in shop equipment, several grand in materials and supplies, six months + in labor, and acute attention to fine detail at every step, is that even possible? How did you manage to afford all of this, including your time?! I didn't think this was even possible anymore, after the industrial revolution. You are a true craftsman. I aspire to be an apprentice to someone of your level of skill, one day, if such a person even still exists. Bravo.
Exactly!!!! I would love to find someone like this to take me under their wing so to speak. People, and places, that put this much time and work into what they do, is definitely a thing of the past!!!
I would love to work in an old machine shop/metal shop!! Cincinnati Ohio use to be littered with them, and use to be the Mecca for machine shop tools and equipment. I dont think they are any more.
It's funny you mentioned 30k+. I was just noticing the final video in the playlist that says it's 1000 hours of work in a 12 minute video. With this level of skill and attention to detail, I would expect an absolute minimum of $30/hr which is honestly almost insultingly low. I could never afford something like this because this clock has to be in the tens of thousands in terms of value. Completely hand made pieces of art go for insanely high prices (for good reason) and this level of craftsmanship seems to be very rare these days.
I’m curious how much a hand made clock like that is worth.

The vast majority of the machine tools I use are very affordable, hobby grade equipment. The Sherline for example is a $600 lathe and would be a great starting point around which to build a home machine shop. Start there and accumulate over time as the finances allow. Let the projects that interest you guide your subsequent power tool purchases, and wherever possible avoid buying a tool that you could make yourself.

I'm a toolmaker too and this attention to detail is not possible in our workplace,tight deadlines and only make what the engineering drawing requires,nothing more.Time is money in the commercial toolmaking sector but for a hobby craftsman it's about quality not quantity.

I did that once. I also forgot to wind the weights back up once and the weights fell to the floor my grandfather was pissed that I broke his Grandfather Clock. 😡

After seeing your video, I decided to make something like you do since I had a lathe from long ago but I never dig deep into it.
Got plan, studying, and researching. I found clock / music box / Orrery (incl. Antikythera) are the same thing, so I decided my next plan will be Antikythera IF I can finish my clock well and couple step BEFORE you. When I saw your next project is Antikythera I'm really SCHOCKED!!! I think I'd better go for music box 'cos my work can never better than yours. :(Keep working. I have introduced a lot friends to subscribe your channel.
