I've had a RadCity 4 over the past two years and used it to replace car trips in some cases, but not everything. I commute to and from work, and I have a trail-a-bike attachment to handle school drop-off and pick-up for my oldest. That school commute plus work commute feels great and gets attention. We feel like part of the neighborhood! And, the attachment helps us enjoy leisure riding together without worrying whether my kid can keep up to speed with my electric-assisted bike. Also, I've got a tandem trail-a-bike, so I can take my two oldest out for rides. You mentioned bike camping briefly, and that's one of the first things I did with the tandem trail-a-bike and the older two kids. We had a 25 mile ride to reach the lakeside campaign spot, and enjoyed a nice overnight, then a 25 mile ride home. Fortunately, the public camping offered outlets in the bathroom hut, so I was able to charge overnight after that distance riding at a moderate assist setting. I planned a stop along the return to charge a bit more and have an ice cream break during the return trip. You also mentioned the sentiment of having cheap zip-ties. That's for maintenance, my dude. I keep a pack of zip ties in my bag of tools. If I have to remove the rear wheel, I'll have to cut the zip-tie holding the motor cable, so I have to replace that each time. It is a feature, not a cheap bug. And, I mentioned the trail-a-bike attachments, but I've also got a trailer to haul around the two younger kids sometimes. I can also use that for hauling cargo if needed, but so far I have only ever carried the kids' kick-scooters as cargo when taking them to a nice park to scoot around outside the trailer. I cannot replace my car entirely, but I've been able to effectively hold off buying a second car while still getting some of my daily essentials covered with biking rather than driving.
I've had a RadCity for about a year and use it to bike commute. In that year, I've put almost 3000 miles on it. Granted, my wife still has a car, but I got rid of the car I was using to drive to work. The RadCity costs about $1500 for the bike and I've added about $300 in accessories after adding a phone holder, rear basket, water proof basket bag and front basket. Based on savings from not having to make a car payment, not paying insurance, and savings from gas and maintenance, I figure that bike commuting saves me about $500/month. Plus, I arrive to work much less stressed than I did when I was driving. It's not for everyone, but e-bikes have made replacing a car with a bike much more doable. BTW, the RadWagon is very comparable to the Yuba Mundo for about $1700. Note: I am not sponsored by RAD Power Bikes. I'm just a fan.
@@LordWinter I agree. I've never understood the price difference. Most of it has to do with the frame being lighter which is much less of an issue with an e-bike.

Bicycles belong. Healthy exercise, fossil fuels free transportation and great for social distancing. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing more protected bike lanes. Children and older adults need to be able to ride safely to work, school or for fun.
Decent video, I agree with some of the comments though where you can rent a car for some of those random trips away for a fraction of the price. For me it would be a way of reducing the 3 cars we do have to 2 which I would be interested in doing.
It kinda replaced mine I have a 93 f150 I only use to drive on bad weather days, long distance and when I drive 4x4 on the beach (I’m from Long Island) there is just something different about taking a bike to work and everywhere else it brings me joy and peace
OK....saw something similar below.....Did you look at the Rad Runner @ 1700 USD ?.....not a "mid-drive" but much less expensive with all the cargo and passenger carrying capacity. It's also a Class 2 so you can use the throttle to move quickly from a dead stop (great feature if you have a passenger or a heavy load). I looked at many e-bikes and finally settled on the 2020 Rad Rover Fat Tire (I live beachside in FL). My biggest concern is that after the COVID sales bump, how many e-bike companies ("real" companies not just re-seller/re-badgers) wil survive in what looks to be a competitive market? Rad-branded bikes, while not the most feature rich or stylish are built like tanks and importantly, use many off-the-shelf parts like motors, controllers, displays etc. The aftermarket for parts and upgrades exists now and is growing so I can continue to improve my Rad for years to come.
The more people that bike, and advocate for safer built environments, the safer biking will become. A lot of safe biking is just planning your route ahead of time, to be on side streets, find available bike paths, etc. Takes a little more time upfront, but worth it for bettered mental and physical and fiscal health!
Great video, a lot of good talking points on utilizing an e-bike; a bit expensive though. Sorry to go on a tangent, however if you own your own home why not add a system to filter your own water to save all those water jug trips?
A lot of households have multiple adults, and at least one car per adult. While it might be quite difficult to get rid of all the cars in a household and replacing them with e-bikes is probably unrealistic and inconvenient, getting rid of one car is very doable! My wife and I went from two cars to one car plus an electric cargo bike similar to the one featured in this video. I can commute and do many errands on the e-bike. My wife commutes in the car. And we can both use the car for camping, long road trips, and those few errands that are beyond the capabilities of the e-bike.
Where I live, the biggest expenses are housing, electric, transportation, food. Generally in that order. All of it keeps going up faster than income. The only real place with any more wiggle room is transportation. A vehicle is a big expense. It's convenient, it's fast, but it's expensive.

There are trade offs with e-bikes. But the 3 main issues are: safety on roads, security and the weather - especially when it’s raining and windy or icy. Otherwise they are fantastic for replacing short journeys and way more fun, healthier for the rider and better for the environment. Perhaps the ideal will be an EV for longer journeys and ebike for shorter ones. But not everyone can afford both.
Actually you summed the whole environmental and e-bike instead of a car moral dilemma for most people up perfectly at the end. I could but I don't want to.
Zero percent chance this makes it for two years without getting stolen while parked outside when shopping. And if you don’t have the ability to bring the 80lb bike inside of your home I think that will be even worse. Bikes don’t last locked up outside. Bikes vanish from locked house garages. Ebikes are fine for commuting, going to appointments, concerts, or the pool. But road trips and errands, a car would still be the choice. That said, most car trips are commuting so using an ebike would save a lot of gas.
It'd be nice to have some kind of "lazy mode" so that I don't even have to move my legs and the battery drives this entire thing. I wonder what the range would be in such mode. Okay, I should probably just stick to my car. But seriously I'd never switch to a bike because of traffic safety, or rather the lack of it. In the car I'm in a "box" that'll (try to) keep me safe, at least in minor collisions. While riding a bike my body is a crumple zone - no thanks.
The problem with your perspective is that many people think like that. And if you feel save in a modern car you will probably drive more reckless. Our primate psychology sucks sometimes :D
These off the shelf ebikes are kack, underpowered and overpriced....I built my own 1000w mid drive Bafang for around £1000, it's mega fast, 160nm of torque! and ultra reliable, hassle free.
@@phatrickmoore Yes, way more. However, that $4k car (which required zero repairs in a year) is probably now worth $7-8k in 2022 and even @ 34 mpg, $6 a gallon adds up. But in 2021 it was unquestionably less expensive.
Mine did for 9 months, it kept 700 miles off my truck. My ebike will be ridden daily until next winter. My truck gets parked, I don't ride when it's raining

But you're clickbait says replace. Unless you live somewhere that you have great public transportation or must park and still walk a long way to the building, the best you can hope for is for it to supplement your car.
I WISH my parish was more bike friendly!!! But it's such a large, congested metropolitan area and there aren't sidewalks everywhere, forget about bike lanes. Our public transportation here in the States generally sucks. But I hate feeling trapped in my house or at the mercy of others who have cars while I'm between cars. So, I bought a bike. Not an e bike, though I may upgrade eventually. Plus I'm living in an area that's less safe than other parts of the state. Theft, trafficking, drugs, so as a female biking at night or without a weapon is a no go for me. But, if I stick to my neighborhood, which has plenty of shops, cafés, a park and library and grocery stops I hope to do fine
Buy a cheap Voodoo (Hudu or Bizango) or a cheap Carera, or a cheap Scott/Giant bike and stick a BBSHD mid drive on with a 17ah 52v battery.....BAM! There you go! You have 1000 watts of power, 160nm of torque and plenty of range! All for....what a grand if you build it yourself? I'm in the UK though not sure what US markets are like.
@@luckyeddie1943 It will definitely be slower but not vastly tbh, as velocity increases so does aerodrag, so 1600 watts and 160nm torque might see me to 45mph on flat road on a calm day but on a horrendously windy day I'm significantly slower and chew through more battery! 500w is the sweet spot imo! Realistically all you need. Average day on my BBSHD sees me using between 200-500 watts unless I'm deliberately using it like a short range moped - but then the bike wears out quicker. It's the torque I care about not the speed, 160nm of torque just eats up hills.
You could get a very nice, new, Honda scooter for less than that. The scooter has more power and under seat storage. Plus you can fill it up with only $4, and you don't have to wait hours to charge it.
bro you got ripped off if you paid $4.5k for the bike alone lol. Insane. That should've costed you no more than $1.5k. I built my own Bafang mid drive 1000w BBSHD ebike for around £1000 building it myself and that includes a bike! It's fast, ultra torquey and reliable, will pull up ANY hill easily and I get around 70 miles of range. Yeah....stuff these 250w ebikes...if it's under 1000w I'm not interested! I'm in the UK
@@joshuaparr3279 police don't care man just do it. The water jug was so unnecessary, haven't you been aware of this thing called a water filter? I have an Alexapure gravity water filter unit, save yourself those trips and money by just refilling it with tap water or rain water when available or creek water in an emergency if you don't live in San Francisco.
That's a silly price for a class 1 bike with no throttle assist. If you're gonna replace a car it should be partly for cost savings, so under $1k should be the price target.
Still carting big bottles of water around? An excellent countertop filter would only cost you as much as one of the bike's accessories. Simplify your SF life! :)
What do we do about theft? Police don’t care and courts don’t prosecute property theft in California. No investigation will be made , no bikes will be returned, no lock stands up to an angle grinder. No laws about battery powered angle grinders and plenty of laws about battery powered e bikes. No revenue in stopping or regulating battery powered angle grinders. Hmmm? I would like another e bike . Maybe an angle grinder could be my way of doing that ?

@@tracecanyon you literally started your comment with "man up." ? So I'm not sure why you are mad at me for responding to that command. I am not a man, and neither, currently, statistically, are most of the people cycling on the street. Ask women why they don't cycle and they will say they don't feel safe enough. So if we want multiple modes of transportation, which I also do, we need to design for, and allow people to use, the infrastructure and gear designed in ways that work for them, and often that's less sweat and more convenience. Today that mostly means cars- e-bikes are a great way to break the driving habit and get people into biking.

Although men have larger total numbers, the number of women riders is increasing exponentially where as the number of men has leveled. The E-bike market on the other hand has exploded in every demographic. It's not for everyone but one small piece of a multi solution puzzle. I hope you find transportation that works for you.

You can get them for that price, not the yuba mundo but the yuba classic if you build the e conversion yourself :)
Is this market to Singapore or need to order
I had no choice but to replace my car with an E-bike, I like the rear motor. Reason, should The chain get off the crank for some od reason I cnas still pedal and still go.. Ever seen an E-bike go with out a chain?
Ebikes are fine for commuting, going to appointments, concerts, or the pool. But road trips and errands, a car would still be the choice. That said, most car trips are commuting so using an ebike would save a lot of gas.
Eh I can do any errand on my bike pretty much, the only thing I'm really restricted from doing on my bike is road tripping like mentioned.
With proper bike infrastructure that shouldn't be an issue. Vote on the issues.
Also you can. Lots of Ebikes have throttles
Holy moly, that bike cost significantly more than my 2010 Honda Fit...
These off the shelf ebikes are kack, underpowered and overpriced....I built my own 1000w mid drive Bafang for around £1000, it's mega fast, 160nm of torque! and ultra reliable, hassle free.
but including recurring costs too? insurance + gas
@@phatrickmoore Yes, way more. However, that $4k car (which required zero repairs in a year) is probably now worth $7-8k in 2022 and even @ 34 mpg, $6 a gallon adds up. But in 2021 it was unquestionably less expensive.
@Joe Forge I paid $4,300 for my one-owner sport manual with 127k miles in mint condition mid-2020.
I’ll go Radpower, save a wad of $$. Thank you. You’re welcome.
If you're comfortable with the tradeoffs then yeah Radpower is a much cheaper option but as always it depends on what's important to you
Mine did for 9 months, it kept 700 miles off my truck. My ebike will be ridden daily until next winter. My truck gets parked, I don't ride when it's raining
46 month out of the year? No problem boblem. Yeah ik you meant weeks and youre right xD
But for 5k, thats 60% of what i paid for my car. And my car has insure and isnt as easy to steal^^
I mean im not against it, actually i try to do as much for the environment as i can and i find it great if you can replace your car with an e bike :)
Casually has rad e46 wagon
good video, but man what an expensive bike.
But you're clickbait says replace. Unless you live somewhere that you have great public transportation or must park and still walk a long way to the building, the best you can hope for is for it to supplement your car.
No way you'd survive in the midwest, where it's basically required to have a vehicle.
Same here Soup, Fitted a 500 Watt Mid Drive to my Carrera, not that much slower i would imagine , i'm also in the UK.
7:00 what music?
Can you take it on BART?
BART suxx
Where is this please
You can rent an SUV at enterprise if you're going camping
The cost of rentals adds up quickly.
@@evanleemiller how often do you go camping?
bro you got ripped off if you paid $4.5k for the bike alone lol. Insane. That should've costed you no more than $1.5k. And you could prob find something similar on aliexpress for like $800-900 with free shipping lol. For $4.5k you could buy a high-end ebike like a super73 or ariel rider grizzley and still had money left over lol
Oh I would love to have more than 250w 🤣 I'd get rid of the car entirely
@@joshuaparr3279 police don't care man just do it. The biggest issue here in the UK is when you live in the countryside like me there's tons of blind bends and virtually no cycling infrastructure (only in cities) so you have to deal with constant near misses, people mashing their horn at you and general road rage.
The water jug was so unnecessary, haven't you been aware of this thing called a water filter? I have an Alexapure gravity water filter unit, save yourself those trips and money by just refilling it with tap water or rain water when available or creek water in an emergency if you don't live in San Francisco.
I will keep my cars and make bike without battery just for fun 👍
That's a silly price for a class 1 bike with no throttle assist. If you're gonna replace a car it should be partly for cost savings, so under $1k should be the price target.
How do ebike riders get to work when it rains?
Still carting big bottles of water around? An excellent countertop filter would only cost you as much as one of the bike's accessories. Simplify your SF life! :)
What do we do about theft? Police don’t care and courts don’t prosecute property theft in California. No investigation will be made , no bikes will be returned, no lock stands up to an angle grinder. No laws about battery powered angle grinders and plenty of laws about battery powered e bikes. No revenue in stopping or regulating battery powered angle grinders. Hmmm? I would like another e bike . Maybe an angle grinder could be my way of doing that ?
What about someone steal your bike while you're shopping? That's a huge problem for me.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ah yes, a video on a car channel talking about replacing cars with alternative modes of transport... Great.
Good quality video though, props for that.
I feel bad for the gf, is she sitting on the metal bars in the back? Yikes :/
Also, "it's too hot in Arizona to use a bike" :P
For me a ebike could replace my car cause I'm single and I don't do much traveling the only issue I'll have I'm in Miami and weather here is so unpredictable..
You can just rent a car when you need to go on a road trip!
Amtrak is nice too for a vacation. None of the nonsense of flying.
I really can't wait until these smaller, 3 and 4 wheel electric vehicles start to make more of a presence on the market so reviews like this are made redundant.
You don't like Ebikes right? Only dirty trucks?
@@nihilisticsoup2919 he never said anything about a truck yhi
I definitely could replace my car
Man up, lose the E-system. Get a bomb proof mountain bike with low gears and a Burley cargo trailer. You'll be able to haul way more stuff. Exponentially more environmental benefits, much less expensive, plus you'll be stronger and healthier.👍
I took my child everywhere in a bicycle trailer all the way through second grade. This is not a solution for everyone but a consideration for some. There will never be a single transportation solution that will work for all people. I embrace multiple solutions. I'm sorry that you are so blinded by your feminism that you just assume I'm some over testosteroned macho male suggesting something only a guy could do. A properly geared mountain bike makes biking and towing possible for any fit person... even people with ovaries. ; )
@@elleryklein3144 Fair enough. I did say that as I was directing it towards the publisher of the video. And yes you probably will sweat riding a bike... male or female. While I respect your fear of riding on the streets. ( It's a legitimate concern), I will say: Out here in Los Angeles, all women's riding clubs are booming. Although men have larger total numbers, the number of women riders is increasing exponentially where as the number of men has leveled. The E-bike market on the other hand has exploded in every demographic. It's not for everyone but one small piece of a multi solution puzzle. I hope you find transportation that works for you.
Good video just a little bit of racism about the potatoes
Oh shut up man, Christ on a bike, get a grip!
@@nihilisticsoup2919 Don't like the comment because you see youself?
Just get a Honda scooter instead if your spending $5000
You should have tried a motor bike first.
false advertisement, watch the entire video just to see that date on ebike. end up flaking on potential gf. 1 out of 10
Sorry, it wasnt worth my time or yours.
I would just replace your car with an EV car.
An EV car is $25,000. A significant difference in price...and that's before insurance, maintenance, etc.
@@elleryklein-fiddler9330 True.
