I thought the Colecovision version had choppy scrolling until I saw MSX versions and completely changed my opinion. But, WOW, the TI version looks incredible! Kudos to Rasmus! That game alone would justify the F18A upgrade.
Interestingly you seem to use the shadow of the ship and the height level indicator to clear obstacles; I on the other hand (and every retrogamer I know) use constant shooting: if your laser passes thru then you're at the right height. Great version comparison, particularly between systems with the same multimedia hardware as the TI-99/4A.
That's probably due to my having playing Arcturus a fair bit more than any other Zaxxon port or clone. And in Arcturus, I find constant shooting undesirable, as it slows down the game. Can't really blame it. As a TI-99 disk game by a kid in his early teens, it's an astounding success for what it is and what it has to work with.
It is a cartridge game, by design. In principle, anyone could do up a cartridge using one of the now standard boards. But most avid TI-99 users these days will tend to just toss it on their FinalGROM and call it a day, since it's easier and cheaper.
It's a drop-in replacement for the 9918A video processor (which is socketed, and so pretty easily removed). And it adds RGB video output, the ability to manipulate the 9918 palette, and a few other things.

I say this as a life long ZAXXON fan. Dragon's Lair on the TI is what really blew my mind.
Great stuff as always!
zaxxon was always one of the loudest cabinets in our arcade
That's amazing.
aah yes very wonderful. Arcturus' attractmode music is so haunting. Kippy's Nightmare is probably more playable imho.

Zaxxon on C64 war auch cool 🤫
I think the fuel thing was inspired by river raid, scramble, etc.
Is there any progress on whether this will be coming out on cart or cassette?

@@PixelPedant I guess I'll have to look up how to do that since I'm kinda clueless...
If Texas Instruments had used the TMS99105A things might run faster.
the angle is wrong in arcturis
Kassandra Estate
It should have been easier to program than other machines and faster as it has the multiply and divide instructions so why did it take so long.
