John’s on his his game here. Fantastic performance.
Agreed!!! Just wish the cameraman would’ve had enough sense to stay on John as he took that solo!
I give you another millennium and you just won't find a band like this one. Beatles unmatchables forever ❤️
Agreed. They alwasy sounded great singing live. I was fortunate enough to be a teenager through Beatlemania and the British invasion. What that did for music and especially what the Beatles did will neve be duplicated. They were and still are the best.
@@MagSeven7✌️👋👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Абсолютно верно, согласен с вами на все сто процентов!!!!💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫✌️
No monitors and screaming girls. They probably had a hard time hearing themselves. Yet, they still sing in perfect harmony and play in perfect time. Amazing.
Absolutely. I was a working musician for 25 years and I can’t imagine having no monitors, never mind the entire audience screaming at the top of their lungs. To pitch the vocals that well is truly incredible. John in this clip wouldn’t have been able to hear anything other than his own guitar and a bit of Ringo.
@@Tony-yp7ok So you're saying they couldn't hear the massive amps and speakers behind them?
@@johnarnold893 They would hear their own amp behind them, but that just has guitar in it… that’s about all they’d hear. A cranked up AC30/AC100 is pretty deafening and John wouldn’t have been able to hear the other guys’ guitars very well as his own amp would be drowning them out. The vocal mics would be in the PA system. The PA speakers would have been positioned in front of them (to avoid feedback), pointing towards the audience. Trust me, in that situation you can’t hear yourself sing at all, which makes it very difficult to pitch well. The sound for performers on stage (even today) is completely different to what the audience hears.
Watch the solo. George’s picking isn’t in sync with the soundtrack, a sign that this may have post performance dubbing. I love this video. I thought the same thing about the screaming. All other videos showing live performance don’t measure up to this one. The comments from some about there not being a pa for vocals/ mix have never played live. 2 nd guessing 60 yrs after the fact.
The Beatles didn’t only change music, they changed the world.
Yeah they did change the world in a sense; length of hair, clothing and date I say it attitude. I was always on trouble at school and also when I started work. " Get your hair cut", was the regain. I count my blessings for having been born in 1948.
I am 73 years old. I saw them in the Atlanta stadium in maybe 1965 or six. They were and are still unbelievably talented.
No monitors! And yet those harmonies are spot on... HOW? That's a special talent.
George Harrison and Paul McCartney singing back up that just says it all about how great this band was
Exactly. The talent on that stage. Songwriting geniuses. Singing backing to Johns song, and George even losing out on lead guitar. Off the scale.
My Mum and late Aunt are in there somewhere!
C'mon, nobody can touch these guys. Still.
4 stars that made a galaxy
Amazing intonation with no monitors and a loud house.
Exacto, increíble que mantengan la afinación sin escucharse a si mismos. Coros y voz principal armonizando. Te vuela la mente.
Incredible, Lennon was a Beast!
Wow!! Never seen this one. Greatness is action. John vocals are unmistakable.
For those of us who have this bootleg ingrained filed in the mind
That was just wonderful perfection 🙏
My mother and her friend were at this concert , I'm so jealous. She won the tickets on a local radio station.
Wow I never realised John played the lead break in this one.
Typical camera work in the 60's (and 70's). The guitarist's lead break might feature the back of the drummer's head or his hi-hat pedal. Those were the acid days.
@@OccamsEraserheadJohn’s lack of confidence in his (brilliant) solo meant he would ask for the camera operators not to show him when he was playing it.
Thanks. I was going to say wait I thought George played lead guitar. John sounded pretty good here.
@@samstevens6544 No he didn't 😂 That was just what cameramen did in that era.
I was 12 years old when the Beatles came to Melbourne. I was too young and too poor to attend the concert at the Melbourne Town hall. Australia went mad for the Beatles attracting record crowds for their world tour. Fans lined the streets of the major cities just for a glimpse.
I was in the same boat, but seeing this memorable concert on TV at the end of the tour just made it so much more memorable.
I was 12 when they came to Boston. My Dad got tickets for the girls down the street, but I was "too young" to go. OUCH!
th-cam.com/video/iVFRgoQe86U/w-d-xo.html
Don't fret-- My buddies older sister saw them twice in Chicago-- She said she couldn't hear a thing other than the screams of all the girls!!!!!
@@thomasfoss9963 Thanks for that report. Good point. Now, I can finally stop fretting after 60 years!
Wow, seriously? They were that tight with all the crowd noise, no monitors or in ears? Incredible. That’s one reason why they are the best band of all time. Great video, thanks for sharing!
AMAZING that Melbourne citizens gave the Beatles the largest crowds that they gathered anywhere in the WORLD! ❤
It is actually Adelaide that holds that record. 300,000 people turned out to greet them for their arrival, which was a third of the population.
@@johnappleby8195 You corrected the bloke who says it was Melbourne that provided the biggest crowd. A third of the population is crazy!
But Beatle crowds are how they got booked by Ed Sullivan before he had ever heard their music. In 1963, Sullivan noticed that 10,000 teenagers had come to Heathrow just to welcome the Beatles home from a trip to Sweden. He called his office from the airport at once and demanded, “Get them on the show.” Smart man!
Absolutely, the bloke that booked the Beatles for their Australian tour, made the booking before they really broke big and therefore got them for a song. Epstein could have quadrupled the fee, but stuck to the agreement.
And they performed for less money than in America and the concerts are great
Their vocals are incredible...so in tune, so balanced, all those girls screaming at the same time.
Many of those women reported having an orgasm during the performances. I didn't believe that until I found it in several different references.
Tempo is perfect, no tendency to rush in play here. Also, what a great mix for an impossible live situation, although I doubt they had monitor speakers. An excellent outing for the fab four.
@@Tom-hk6ub:
Richie was one of the best things that ever happened to the Beatles. He could shift gears and play in literally every genre, and J, P & G would eventually write in almost all of them.
This is definitely one of my favorite early Beatles' songs. It is great to see them in color. They had such wonderful stage presence.
Amazing musical performance
Almost wanna cry. So much feeling in John's voice!
One of my favorite "early era" Beatles songs. Thanks for this. It's killer
This has to be one of the best early recorded concerts. Great job Melbourne!
In 1964 i was 12 in Sydney, at Kings Cross, and saw their car driving past me. Paul was waving to everyone. Wow I saw Paul! There were huge screaming crowds in the streets. That was Beatlemania. Just 60 years ago. What a lovely message and energy they have.
I love this song! Such an underrated song from a Hard Days Night! 😊
A beautiful and stunning tribute to the greatest rock band ever. Great performance from the lads.
Thank you.
Rather amazing that the band can play and sing pretty much in tune, on time, without floor monitors to be able to hear themselves, especially with a screaming crowd that is eons louder than presented on the video. No earbud monitors, no fold-back speakers with a specific monitor mix musicians enjoy today. The lads literally could not properly hear themselves playing and singing.
obviously, they were able to hear themselves on stage or they would not have been able to do that.
@@alanoliver5762 The Beatles themselves stated they could barely hear themselves and would just wing it and mostly get it OK. But also the main reason why they were not considered a top stellar live band in their touring days. Have you ever been onstage speaking/singing into a mic without a monitor with noise from the audience? I have, and one can barely hear themselves, and I could not hear from the front of house speakers facing the audience, I was behind them. With the thousands of screaming girls, The Beatles could not properly hear anything.
they were just glad they were not back in Hamburg in 1961, with drunks hurling whiskey bottles at them
and looking for a good knock down drag out fist fight... everynite
Typical 60s cameraman:
"Guitar solo? Not on my watch. No one's interested in those. Oh, it was the only one Lennon ever played live, was it? Nevermind. I got more footage of Paul and George doing backing vocals because we don't have enough of that."
John was also on with his guitar lead for Get Back. Unfortunately the cameraman was off again for that performance.
John was VERY self conscious about his lead guitar solo playing so Brian Epstein arranged for the camera to never be on John during the lead solo! it would be great if we could see him play the solo though!
Some of the highest quality sound and video ever done with the Beatles on tour.
Kudos to the Australian technicians, engineers and photographers.
The great colorizing puts the frosting on the cake.
The best band that ever was and ever will be.
As a Colorizer this is the first Amazing Colorization I have seen in a long time.
I hated to give this a like as I'm apparently like #667 but colorized '64 needs all the likes it can get! Thanks for this
I haven't heard this song in decades. How does it sound now? Absolutely killer!
This is more than nostalgia; this gets primal.
You can tell touring has not become old for them yet
Also the girls are not screaming so loud. They can here themselves . John is on fire here as he plays the lead on this great song
Excellent to see this in colour 👏
I was 7 years old in 1964, saw them in Kansas City. Screaming girls and inadequate sound system yes, but I saw them live and sang every song with them!
Thank you!!! I've never seen this video before !! And it's a song I've always loved too !!! They were and still are, in my opinion, the greatest band EVER!!!
One of my absolute favorites from the early period of Beatle music.
Johns raw rock voice and the bands fantastic skills when it comes to singing harmonies...
Very good job with the coloring👍
Fantastic!
Amazing that in all the live film/video of "You Can't Do That" floating around, not one cameraman managed to capture John Lennon during one of his few live guitar solos.
well done Alex..this is my all time favourite Melbourne concert song. thank you.
Beatles forever ...perfect 👍
And once again, John plays that great lead guitar and the camera is aimed at anything but.
@@BerniewahlbrinckYeah, John wasn’t lead guitar but that great solo was his.
I miss these times with Beatles hits and the innocence of the pre-drug era.
Couldn't agree more . to me A Hard Days Night, Help, Rubber Soul & Revolver were their best music period. Guitar driven songs and great interaction on the records musically
pre-drug era soon to be destroyed by none others than the Beatles themselves
Ace! I was 6 years old when The Beatles did this concert. I have been a fan since they released "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Thanks for posting it, BeatleAlex!! Cheers 🌞
I used to sing this one in a country band I played with around 2000-2001. Gave me an excuse to bring my 12-string. The other 12-string tune I sang with them was Hotel California-the rest of the time, on a four-hour+ gig I played a Telecaster.
The Beatles recorded a number of live performances, but they never felt that they were good enough to be released, so they weren’t at the time. Surprising for one of the greatest live bands of all time. Even at the end of the band they decided that ‘let it be’ wasn’t good enough to be released, and went back into the studio to record ‘abbey road’.
Whenever I see vids of this great Little Rock n roll band I just can’t take my eyes off George absolutely loved the guy and he’s playing my fave Harrison guitar the absolutely gorgeous Ricky 12 stringer just awsome RIP JOHN N GEORGE 🙏❤️
Today they placed a commemorative blue plaque on the house George was born in and lived his early life in Liverpool.
I can't recall Paul McCartney ever being on stage and wearing a miserable face, he so enjoyed performing & thankfully for me and I suspect many others there were cameras to cover it all even to this day June 2024. Thanks Paul.
Very kool! Beatles at their best, however too few shots of Ringo, and camera should have been on John during the lead break, rare times we see John playing lead guitar
YOU’RE SO AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
what an absolute gem. thank you for posting.
Great audio. GBOAT!
Wow thank you these colour shots are amazing.
So clear & real for want of better words.
Just thank you.
Yes , there'll be for sure a anoher group like them
IN Another PLANET !!!!!!!
Long live The Beatles
One of my fav early songs... great job
I changed my mind ,it is indeed live , but the quality is so mint...
It can not be overstated how good John could sing.
Also thanks for Channel 9 Melbourne for their always top-notch production standards, audio and video.
GTV 9 made a feature of these international tours right through to the 1970s. Their live production skills at the time, honed on doing 5 nights of live variety with In Melbourne Tonight was the best in the world and years ahead of it's time.
Sadly today, they only do cheap panel shows and awful "reality TV" rubbish.
A great performance, but it's a sin that John's guitar solo beginning at 1:38 wasn't captured. 😢
He was notorious for telling TV directors to not show him playing a solo. He must have felt awkward or something. He did a fine job with this performance. I'd really like to see him bend them strings one time on "you can't do that."
@@timcarter7616 Give me a source of that statement please. I've never heard that before. That we don't see his solo RUINS this video for me. (And always has. I've had this video for a couple decades, not colorized.)
@@djbennett900I feel the exact same way. There's only 1 live footage where you can see him playing the solo

Nice colorization Alex!
Sounds like a direct to board mix. Minimizes the overwhelming continuous screaming from the crowd. It's amazing the band manages to stay in tune and in the groove so solidly when the almost certainly couldn't hear themselves over the crowd. No stage monitors whatsoever 1:09.
They were so good looking.
Great work - The whole Beatle film history is there to be refreshed and can be beautifully revived
A concert rendition that sounds as good as if they'd recorded it in a studio. Out of this world talent.
My favourite group the Beatles and favourite singer the king ELVIS PRESLEY 2 OF THE BEST
Incredible audio for a Live Performance!!! Nice Job!
Amazing. Number one band in the history of pop/rock music.
My high school girlfriend went to see them in '64 in Boston. I remember asking her how they sounded and all she said was, "I don't know. We all just screamed our heads off and couldn't hear them at all".
great to see this wonderful footage in colour fab
BEATLE ALEXXXXXX I LOVE YOUURRRRRRRR WORKKKKKKKKKKK🤩🤩🤩🤩
Everytime I think I I might catch Lennon performing his solo on this song the cameraman lets me down, the bloody arse-hole. 😠
I think John requested that the cameraman shouldn't focus on him when he plays solo
That would be so interesting! Do we have any documentation of that?
Similarly, I've never seen footage of his Long Tall Sally solo

Kudos to the sound engineer at this show way back when. He probably never realized we'd be listening to it 60 years later. Remarkably good sound considering the technology and the screaming girls!
He likely had a run through practice at the afternoon show before this evening show. Lucky for us.
