William Ames wrote that the conscience belongs to the practical judgment by which a man can know right from wrong "to the end that it may be a rule within him to direct his will." The conscience bears witness to all men and holds them accountable before God. No man can escape God's governor within the soul. While men may silence it, profane it, and manipulate it, it will one day testify against them in God's court. The explanation of the function of the conscience, we do not mean to over-simplify its activity. While the conscience takes certain information and forms judgments, the process can occur undetected by the individual, affecting his judgment and emotions. A person may simply feel guilty but not really understand why. So it is with the unredeemed who know they are guilty. Their conscience testifies to that truth by way of the law written on their hearts, but they can not fully express why. Their minds are fuzzy and confused. Their desires war against what they know to be true. They allow their sin to gain victory over their consciences until they are hushed, silenced, and finally seared altogether. The conscience is too vulnerable to the influence of sin to bring man to a right sense of his own sinfulness. James Buchanan wrote, "The conscience becomes weaker in proportion as sin grows stronger in the soul, till the sinner may arrive at a point of degeneracy at which he is wholly given over to a reprobate mind, and so far from being condemned by his conscience, he may dare to justify his wickedness by 'calling good evil, and evil good.' Instead of being ashamed of his guilt, he may even 'glory in his shame.'" The conscience needs to be reinforced, informed, and enlightened by the Spirit and the Word. But if the Word of God is ignored and sin allowed to continue and grow, the conscience will either become hopelessly misinformed by another rule, or it will be silenced by wicked desires, and its declarations of guilt will become a meaningless echo in a hardened soul. Such is the destiny of all those who rebel against God. If He does not change their hearts, awaken their consciences, and give them a desire to please Him, they will stagnate, harden, and eventually die in their sins.
@warminster1005 If you don't have a conscience, then there's no tool to convict one of their sins. If one is without a conscience, then they are a reprobate . The law of God will be written on hearts and minds, enabling believers to live as the people of God (v. 10). The command for the people to put the Law on their hearts (Deut. 6:6)
@warminster1005 Antipathy toward God’s Word inherently resides in the hearts of all sinners. This antipathy may even be present in those within the church. If there is any doubt about this, it is worth asking why popular evangelicalism’s greatest fear is being out of sync with the culture. Pastors and leaders are chasing the culture, so that its trends show up in their churches. They treat this pursuit as a necessary evangelistic strategy. But the only way to be in sync with the culture is to diminish the presence of the Word of God because unregenerate culture will always be fundamentally and irreconcilably incompatible with the truth of God. By catering to the unchurched or to the unconverted in the church, evangelical- ism has been hijacked by legions of carnal spin doctors seeking to convince the world that Christians can be just as inclusive, pluralistic, and open-minded as any postmodern, politically correct worldling. However, true biblical Christianity requires a denial of every worldly value and behavior, and Christians must be willing to make a commitment to the Word of God, with a full understanding of the implications of doing so.
I looked at my Baptism Certificate yesterday. I happened on it, looking through my important papers. The Certificate says and memorialized Romans 6:3-4. Love you Preacher Teacher Ferguson - I belong to Jesus. It is stability and dignity - how could I live in sin if I died in sin with Christ Paul says Romans 6:2. My Certificate says, “Don’t you know”. My identity✝️♥️✝️. Dead to Sin’s Dominion!!! Yes, to know who I am. A new identity, blessed, a new citizenship, life transformed. Beautiful. Think on, read, re-read all day. I believe Jesus put my hand on my Certificate yesterday - He knew what your teaching would be today. ♥️✝️♥️

Thank you Dr Ferguson..
Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done that now, I belong to you and Jesus, you belong to me..
By coincidence, in my regular Bible reading this morning, I am reading Romans 6. Will focus more, thank you. There are no coincidences!
I agree:
There is no coincidence, just His Providence!
Praise the LORD!
