Masterpiece of a hidden, interior world, singing for Dimitri, for the evenings spent together listening to each other's music as the birdsong fluttered around the Suffolk building - this work is an intimate portrait of friendships. No wonder Mstislav Leopoldovich couldn't bear to play it in public. "Give rest to thy servants" and their music, lost to us. We will never hear Britten's projected Sea Symphony. It lay in 1977, a year he didn't reach.
