F1 F2 F3 HYBRID SEEDS? | POLLINATION and SEED SAVING in Home Gardening

  • Which Seeds to Choose and Why? F1, F2 or F3 Hybrid seeds or sometimes Heirloom seeds on seed packets. In todays episode we will look into What these letters and terms actually mean and whats their importance in gardening including seed saving and seed savers exchange.
    we will learn:
    Types of Seeds:
    Hybrid seeds (F1 F2 F3),
    Heirloom seeds and
    Open-Pollinated seeds.
    Importance of knowing these types in gardening, specially for those who think of saving their plant seeds for sowing in next season.
    If you want to learn some basics of pollination, I have an animated video explaining pollination and seed formation at this link: • How Are Seeds formed? ...
    So Now lets understand F1 F2 F3 by drawing a family tree.
    Imagine plants as people!
    Well, You must know what you are Purchasing, whether children, grand children or great grandchildren! So what actually happens at some point of time with these generations and what to expect in such plants. We will look into this in the video.
    Now Regarding F1 Hybrid seeds or or first generation seeds:
    F2 Hybrid seeds or second generation seeds.:
    Some gardeners might think of Saving seeds from plants grown with F2 seeds. F3 seeds do not have that potency and qualities of F2. So the best seeds are F2 and F1.
    Now lets learn two more terms used in gardening - open-pollinated and heirloom seeds:
    Some seed companies even sell very old heirloom seeds (like cultivars that are more than 50 or even 100 years old).
    The Seed Savers Exchange defines heirlooms as cultivars that have been saved and shared by generations of home gardeners.
    One more point to remember is some people think Hybrid seeds are the some synthetic modern seeds produced by genetic modification. These Genetically modified (GM) seeds or crops are actually different and these are created by using the advanced GM technology in agriculture.

    Seed creation is a fascinating hobby that anyone can do.
    It Requires :
    #1 Patience
    #2 Extreme notes
    #3 Primary genetic material
    #4 Basic lab equipment
    #5 Sterile storage containers
    #6 Propagation materials
    #7 Environmental light control
    #8 Environmental Humidity control
    #9 Environmental Temperture control
    #10 Educational media for beginners thru advanced.
    #11 Legal registration to protect the genetic seed code you developed .
    _______________
    The seeds we created took 11 years to produce but sold for 6.3 million Euros last month.
    Not a bad return for a seed we developed in our garage.
    DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!

      Why did it sell for so much?
      Also if it took 11 years is it considered heirloom?
      Is it genetically stable?

      Thank you Ala. Most seeds packets do not have anything written. Its self understood that they are f2. Good companies do mention this on the packet. Heirloom is just generational continuation of some plants maintained to true to type from many years.

    How do you create a f3 generation of plants when the plants grow separately sexually like 1 plant will be a female and the other plant will be a female? I know in order to create the f2 generation you simply gather the healthiest male and the healthiest female of the f1 generation and breed them and that creates the f2 but to create the f3 do you pick a male phenotype and a female phenotype and breed those cause thats the only way I know maybe you just pick a phenotype either a male or female and you breed it with 1 of thee other 15 offspring idk but id really love an answer

  • @IslenoGutierrez
    @IslenoGutierrez ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m new to gardening and I have a question. If it takes crossing two pure plants to produce an f1 hybrid plant and f1 plants produce fruit with the characteristics of both parents but f2 doesn’t, where does f1 seeds come from that we buy from seed companies? And if those seeds we buy from seed companies come out of the fruit of the f1 hybrid plant, aren’t the plants we are planting from those seeds f2 plants with f2 fruit? But then how do we get all of our fruits to have the characteristics of the two pure parent plants? I need this explained better. I’m wondering where f1 seeds come from if f1 plants come from pollinating two pure plants and somehow from the f1 seeds we purchase we get f1 plants with f1 fruit.

    • @jerryknight992
      @jerryknight992 ปีที่แล้ว

      the F1 seeds you can buy are obtained by crossbreeding two pure species they know that will work well and will get always the same by doing so, this F1 will get the dominant genes from it's parents, from the F1 plants you get the F2 seeds this ones will start to have combinatios of the recessive and dominant genes (ex. low production x big size or high production x small size...) from the parents and you get the third generation (F3) this is why you need to buy seeds again that comes from the pure species

    • @IslenoGutierrez
      @IslenoGutierrez ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jerryknight992 I thought that when you cross two purebred plants, the fruit that grows is F1 but if you plant a plant from the seeds of that F1 fruit then it’s an F2 plant that won’t produce all the same fruit as the original fruit from the two purebreds. Is this wrong?

    • @jerryknight992
      @jerryknight992 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IslenoGutierrez yes, the combination of two varieties produces the F1 fruit in a pure plant with F1 seeds in it and if you let the plants from this F1 seeds self-pollinate you will get the F2 and so on, sorry if my english is bad

    • @IslenoGutierrez
      @IslenoGutierrez ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jerryknight992 I’m sorry if I’m confused. But I’m still confused to as how a seed is produced that you can grow into an F1 plant with F1 fruit that is genetically all the same. I thought if you plant a seed from the fruit produced by mixing two pure plants then it would be an F2 and thus not all fruit the same. So I’m confused to where this seed you can buy comes from.

    • @jerryknight992
      @jerryknight992 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IslenoGutierrez the plants we can consider as pure are species which genes has remained unchanged for generations then is stabilized genes, if you take two different of this stabilized species (male from one female from the other the way this is made depends of the plant) and you crossbreed them the seeds you get from this fruit will be the F1 seeds that will give you F1 plants
