John Hurt is/was my uncle. Wonderful man who cared about family deeply and went out of his way (and pocket) to make sure I had the best medical care at a time when I needed it. I lived with him in his London flat through that time and he would send me out to explore London and do the tourist thing at the weekends because even though I didn’t have anyone able to go with me he still disliked seeing a 20 something moping around a flat for the weekend. In that photo John and my brother could be twins, it was often only semi seriously suggested that if a film called for a ‘young’ John my brother would be perfect. I also have the same eyes as him, ‘they couldn’t see my eyes’ is hysterical especially since we call our eyes ‘little piggy Hurt eyes with no eyelid’. I miss him very much, he was such a dry comic and passionate actor, he hated all the ‘behind the scenes’ bonus extras on DVD as in his words ‘spoils the magic!’
In fact I was just watching him in Alien and realised just how much of the power of the infamous death scene is down to his performance. He understood the indignity of pain and didn't flinch from portraying it.
Lovejoy was such great entertainment and all characters so colorful. Great Brit atmosphere everywhere in it. My wife and I enjoyed so many of the other programs such as Prime Suspect.

I had the happy luck of meeting Mr Mcshane when I was still living in New York. I was going to the main comic book shop to go to in the city West Coast Comics with my friends. I just saw him on the way there waiting for that light to change at the crosswalk. So there I am standing next to Al Swearengen himself, and I say to myself what the hell try to talk to him. So I say hi he say hi back I told him I am big fan of his, and we talking till we parted way on the street. I have some celebrities on the streets of New York over the years and I got to say that was the nicest encounter ever. He really is the sweetest. He could tell when I started speaking at first I was a little nervus and he was so chill and just told me to take my time we have a lot of walking to do. So so nice it was a real pleasure to meet him.
Surprised neither of them mentioned that Ian McShane plays Professor Broom in the upcoming Hellboy reboot, a role last played beautifully by his late roommate John Hurt in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy.
They changed the character's name for the reboot - Professor Bruttenholm. 🤔💭I have a feeling he may do a different late night show-or more printed interviews done by phone where he talks about all his projects coming up. Deadwood Movie - May, Hellboy - April, Bolden Movie - May(if I remember), and a Dark Shadows comnentary due to be released in May too.
Good point. Money at stake. Wonder if Ian was happy with movie gig and/or finished product. In any event, Ian's body language could be interpreted as being uptight, uncomfortable, and/or angry about talking with Steven.
ByrnePerfection They didn’t change anything. Both John an Ian play the same character, Bruttenholm. Its pronounced “Broom”, but it’s the same character
Ben M Uncomfortable. It looks like he warmed up. If you look at the way he sits-looks like it's manners/classiness. He did state in a podcast he likes radio interviews etc. even if he's at a radio studio better, because kind of awkward on talk shows. 🤔💭but then he seems to love talking to regular everyday kinda people who interview for a low key place.
Goya Solidar I agree, but HBO track record of spinoffs into movies is 0 for 2 - I hope to GOD they don’t kill it for us. I still rewatch the series 🥰❤️
I thought the final episodes were dreadful. It implicated all the characters in the murder of a prostitute and so ruined them all. We no longer had a sympathetic character. Just moral cowards.
To be honest Deadwood was pretty accurate in its historical timeline, there was really nowhere TO go with it after it had been brought into the United States, without fictionalising stories which would have robbed a lot of the shows integrity, if they had continued it would have been a fairly run of the mill soap opera of an expanding western town
Finished the Lovejoy series a couple of months ago, still not sure about that ending. Was happy to have original writer back for final episode, but the ending was too pat. Seemed designed for reruns.
Love Ian ❤️ What a magnetic personality. His eyes pull you in, tie you up and have their way with you. So looking forward to seeing Al in Deadwood one more time.

There's nothing better than honouring a deared friend that has contributed a lot the world of acting like John Hurt, I'm not a fan of Ian, but what he did was so beautiful by telling some life stories with him as a way of paying tribute to him. So, R.I.P. Sir John Hurt.
Great to see Ian again. Love that photo from the early 60s. The contrast between Ian and his great friend, the late John Hurt, is quite pronounced. I don't think I've seen photos of either of them as teenagers before. Wonderful actors...
Ian McShane portrayed what, in my mind, is the personification of brutality in Sexy Beast, Movie gangsters like De Niro and Pacino at least seem approachable, but McShane's Teddy Bass, hulking, unblinking and dead-eyed was pure malevolence - the gangster I'd least like to meet in a dark alley.
The breakfast scene with Ray Winstone should be studied as a masterclass in all acting schools, both Ian McShane and Ray Winstone played the scene to perfection.
