As a society today...we deserve to go through something like this again, so that maybe we can go back to respecting each other again

Let's hope not. That period saw a lot of needless suffering and death.

My parents were kids during the Depression and quite poor. My mom talked about having tomatoe soup gravy, and as a treat she and her siblings had crunched up soda crackers (saltines) with a little milk and sugar over them.

My mom was a kid in the depression and we always ate crackers and milk.. And I never knew anyone my age who did the same. Now I know where this comes from.

Grew on nothing but depression era recipes. I am beyond grateful for my grandmother's passing these down to me. My own family have relied on these to feed us through belt tightening times.

Fried Bread Dough & Fried Potatoes...
Growing up, everyone had a garden and canned their own food.

Fried cabbage and noodles. Steamed broccoli and cauliflower over rice with soy sauce.
    Hearty, simple, and cheap fare.

My Grandma raised 10 children in The Great Depression. Yard Chickens and a garden. Raised on heath food and didn't know it they joked late in life

    Boiled rice
    Stinging nettle steamed
    Plain yogurt
    Dirt cheap but extremely good.
    Better than spinach.

Colleague from the upper northeast told us that his mother always had a pot of vegetable soup. Their family would share with the hungry.

Many families had little food other than loaf bread. Lots of young men lied about their age so that they join the service and get food, shelter and clothing.

My grandmother was a girl during the Depression and I spent a lot of time with her when I was young. We ate every single dish highlighted in this video. Except the fast food. She lived rurally and there weren’t any restaurants close.
I never knew that about broccoli! One of my very favorite vegetables! 🥦

Grapefruit with brown sugar and a Maraschino cherry on top and broiled in the broiler for a couple minutes until the brown sugar melted.

The funny fact about grapefruit is that the bitterness is all in the connective tissue. If you peel the grapefruit like an orange, and eat only the pulp, it's sweet ! Very few people know this.

I grew up on a lot of these foods during the 80s and 90s..we had Great depression poverty in my home and we still cook depression dinners..why just tonight when I made a pot of mulligan stew ( minus the tobacco and lint .( Weird history) Lol...but we made a pan of Depression corn bread..it's minus the eggs ...we use corn oil and baking powder and a can of evaporated milk to stretch the jiffy corn mix..but even before COVID and the economy we were eating stuff like this and still do

Yes we need to practice survival now. Pray for Jesus to protect us and provide our daily bread. Buying wheat berries and grinding them to make flour also having pancake mix on hand will be helpful. Fishing hunting and perserving food things most of us don't know how to do but better learn FAST.
